Article revisits potential merger between Pac-12 and some Big 12 schools - JustAnotherFan - 06-03-2021
The article (written by Oklahoma State people) imagines what it would look like to add Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. With the two imagined divisions, Stanford would retain the California schools and the North schools.
"In this setup, let’s exclude Baylor just to be spiteful and include Utah, a relatively recent addition of the Pac-12."
I appreciate them excluding Baylor.
"It might be wise to roll the dice on a 16-team move instead of waiting for the next conference realignment domino to fall."

It's really kind of amazing how Larry Scott effectively lost his job the first month on it when Texas wouldn't join the Pac expansion effort he pushed because it thought the Longhorn Network was sacrosanct Had that move happened, the Pac-12 Network would have been on DirecTV without any question, the conference revenues would have ballooned, and he'd likely still have his job.
I wonder if Texas would now reconsider, because that school is the domino that must fall for it to happen. If Texas is in, it will happen, IMO.

I doubt Texas and the PAC-12 schools would come to any kind of agreement about TV contracts. What do Stanford and Cal have in common with Oklahoma State? Stanford and Cal would be unlikely to accept Baylor so it makes sense to not even consider them as a possibility.
Even though TV revenue is not good I'm satisfied with the PAC-12 and don't want any conference changes.

If they merge they should become the Big 16. Drop Pacific because it means nothing east of the Big River.

LOL, they should call themselves the Big 14 because numbers don't have meaning in conference names.

I suggest they just add a + to the existing name. If it works for Disney, it should work for the P12. The PAC-12+. I kinda like it.....

As a Texas fan, the whole drama that's unfolded over the last few decades - SWC to Big12 and then the exits and new entrants to the Big 12, to me the only thing that matters is that OU and Texas stay together. OSU and Tech tagging along would be a good boost as well and the four would clearly boost the rep of the Pac in the three major men's sports. Those four and the southern CA and AZ schools would be a pretty big power 8 group - which to me would make it feel like Cal and Stanford wouldn't benefit by the move -- at least within the conference.
Ultimately, just as to me the four CA schools continuing to play each other is part of life, I would love to see the OK schools and Texas somehow start playing Ark and LSU regularly. That would be a lot of fun.

Swap LSU for A&M and things get more comfortable for most Texas fans. (I mean, if you had to start a rivalry with a current $EC school...)
The Longhorn Network is a slowly shrinking entity that's also losing money, last I heard. Maybe a conference merger here would allow those assets/rights to be rolled into a new entity.

Such a conference would encompass what has historically been referred to as "the west." (I always chuckle at the notion that Texas and Oklahoma are considered in the "west" and Ohio and Missouri are in the "mid-west" when on the map they are all in the middle of the USA.)
Our conference has strayed far from the Pacific ocean. With such a merger of conferences IMO the "Pac" should go away.
In naming this new conference, I would embrace the concept of the "West." While "Manifest Destiny Conference" would properly describe the territory of the members, I doubt this name would get much traction in the debate. I like the following:
AMERICAN WEST CONFERENCE (AWC)
US WEST CONFERENCE (USW)
USA WEST CONFERENCE (USAW) -- You saw it here first!
WILD WEST CONFERENCE (WWC)

Hey, Missouri is fairly far west as the midwest goes.
Ohio, Michigan, and most of Indiana are all in the eastern time zone yet somehow form the core of the midwest. All from out 19th century view of the country.
