WBB — 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup - Baez87 - 06-18-2021
The United States women’s basketball team beat Brazil today to advance to the championship game in the 2021 Women's AmeriCup. They will meet the home team, Puerto Rico, which won a squeaker over Canada this afternoon in the other semifinal game. Teams from the Americas have been playing each other all week to determine what team will represent their region in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup.
Haley Jones is the lone Stanford Cardinal player on the US team, a team coached by South Carolina's Dawn Staley. Staley's assistants are Arizona's Women's Basketball Coach Adia Barnes and US Olympic Team Assistant Coach Jennifer Rizzotti.
Today’s game started slow for the US team, which had to overcome a first half thirteen-point deficit. In the third quarter, Haley's up-tempo play and her nine-point production were instrumental in the US team taking the lead. North Carolina State's gifted post, Elissa Cunane, provided the scoring in the fourth quarter that assured the team the win.
The championship final between Puerto Rico and the US team will be shown on ESPN+ tomorrow at 6:10PM Pacific Time.
