Sooner or later somebody needs to tell him to back off and hit it in the short grass.

it was a pretty epic implosion. from 1st place to eventually 26th in a span of 5 or 6 holes.
I'm not sure how much he can govern down -- bigger thing is probably to find a one-way miss. when Ranger Rick can go either way, it makes it hard. that is one area to work on -- the bigger area (imo) is to take advantage of his length. he is sitting outside the top 200 on Tour from a 100 yards and in.
Wilco is fun to watch. probably 15 yards longer than Bryson and he doesn't even look like he tries to hit it hard.

Bryson first in PGA average driving distance. McIlroy five yards back.

All he had to do to avoid the brush was give in and hit a draw. You just knew he wouldn't do it.

at the Open, Wilco averaged 12+ yards longer per drive than Bryson (roughly 25 yards longer than Rory). Wilco averaged 361 per drive on Friday -- almost 30 yards further per drive than Bryson. he's just a kid (21) -- he'll get stronger, longer and better.
Wilco and Higgo should be bright ZA stars for a long time to come.

Higgo’s all around game is better than Wilco at this point. Bryson is a very good putter. I think he might have won by hitting three woods. On shorter courses Spieth should hit three woods. If he was striping with his driver he would be hard to beat anywhere.

I don't think his implosion had to do with his strategy to swing for the fences. He was in the rough a lot throughout the tournament, as were a lot of other "not so long players". Look at Oosty. He might have the smoothest, most grooved swing in golf, yet he missed the last 2 fairways. What happened there? If Bryson learns to control his emotions, which IMO is why he blew up, he could win many majors because he's got a killer combination of length AND being great with the short stick.
Bryson seems like a big-hearted guy (unlike 'ol Brooksie) and he's trying things that have never been done before, which I respect. If you have the U.S. open lead after 64 holes, something must be working. Plus, he's already won one!

Tour putting stats don't support the great putter theory but no worries. I just hope as Bryson gets better that he will start playing faster. I'm not a Koepka fan, but I like his attitude about playing faster. when paired with Bryson, he tries to get the group "on the clock" on the first hole to keep things moving.

Bryson didn't seem to have much trouble with narrow fairways at the US Open last year...
However, this year he's 187th in driving accuracy which is not good.
I think putting is where he needs to improve most. 172nd in Round 4 putting average, 108th in Round 3. He struggles in particular in the 3-6 foot range.
Drive for show, putt for dough.

Speaking of implosions, today happens to be the 40th anniversary of John McEnroe's classic, "You *cannot* be serious!" meltdown.

McEnroe won that match though, right?

McEnroe won the first-round match over Gullikson and Wimbledon over Borg, yes. Borg had won five straight Wimbledons to that point.
McEnroe also beat three players from USC in Lutz, Ramirez, and Stan Smith in the fourth round, then Johan Kriek and Rod Frawley. McEnroe dispatched Frawley with comparative ease in straight sets, whereas it took Borg five sets to defeat Jimmy Connors in the semis.

I spent an hour listening to McEnroe yell at Diane Sawyer before we could finish. The next day he was gracious. A screw loose somewhere.

Odd. He's a native New Yorker. I thought they were typically calm, cool and in control...

@slide Totally agree about playing faster. It's awful to be paired with someone who crawls out there and it also impacts the fan enjoyment. I side with Koepke as well.
