David DeCastro should have no problem signing with another team if the injury is not serious.

The official reason for the release is $8.75 million in cap space. The Steelers will have replaced their entire starting OL over the last 13 months.

The story that he may be retiring due to injury seems to be credible, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
DeCastro was as big a part of the resurgence of Stanford Football as anyone. Totally massively dominant in college and the NFL.

Either way, this guy goes down as one of the greatest offensive linemen in Steelers history. One could easily make the argument that he was their second-greatest guard, behind newly elected Hall of Famer Alan Faneca.
If he goes out, he's definitely going out on top despite his ankle problems.

“DeCastro’s battles with Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict were legendary. He accused Burfict of spitting on him in the epic 2016 playoff game. One can easily find video of DeCastro burying Burfict on a goal-line play and going helmet-to-helmet with him on another, like a pair of angry rams.”
DeCastro had a wonderful mean streak on the field. What a great player.

Bone spurs in ankle are not considered a football injury. He has to get them removed even if he doesn't play football, so if the surgery works as intended, why not continue playing?

While I would support DeCastro in a bid for a SB ring should he choose to sign with a team that will contend, I think recurring bone spurs (and avoiding additional wear and tear on his brain) are absolutely solid reasons for stepping away. Hope he sees this as a can't-lose decision.

Richard Sherman - I expect him to remain active. He's put together an okay career. ;-)
Also possibly Michael Thomas? He has had a long, unexpected, and remarkable career on special teams. I think he suffered a torn pec to end last season, but he's healthy again and looking to land somewhere this year.
