Ziaire Williams scouting report - Spiny_Norman - 07-22-2021
Seth Davis of The Athletic interviewed 5 NBA scouts about 50 top draft prospects. One might characterize Ziaire Williams' evaluation as "mixed." FYI - the NBA draft is a week from today.

Other than Jalen Johnson, I think Ziaire has the biggest potential to drop. He gets bumped off his line a lot. I don’t think he’s the toughest kid physically. I’ve heard complaints from his coaches at every level about his work habits. There’s a lot to like there, as a 3-point shooting hybrid forward. What interests could a 19 year old kid have? My group of non-40 year decision friends would probably put girls on top. Followed by Red Mountain, Pabst, cheeseburgers, Schlitz, cars, Rio Nido dances, Rio Nido fights, the Giants, the Niners, the Bay Bombers. Academics in the mist.

Any list that omits Cathleen Caballero seems badly flawed.

It seems odd that Haase would be one to complain about his work habits; I would presume that Haase would be going to bat for Williams.

I mean, it seems to be supported by the available circumstantial evidence, but I am surprised that Haase would be telling NBA teams that.

I continue to split the blame 50/50 between Zaire and the staff, and it's really too bad for all of them.

You can't blame Zaire for the major family issues he had to deal with during the season, or Covid. But I would say if you took the family issues, Covid, and a perhaps a less than serious approach to the game, then maybe you get what we got. We will never know what we would have had if he had been able to play the entire season and Covid was not an issue.

Williams seemed to put a lot of effort into the defensive end, at least by my eye, which is a rare quality for the indifferent-to-basketball basketball prospect.

There's a video of Coach Mora saying similar things about Josh Rosen. It's definitely cringeworthy when a high-profile coach makes those kinds of comments about an athlete.

I think it's symptomatic of a certain managerial culture common among olds -- who value more "paying your dues" rather than asking how they can adapt to figure out you. I kind of hope younger generations will have a different and better thought process when they assume power but I'm dubious. Absolute power and all that.
