If Reds and Red Sox can coexist, then surely Rockers and Rockies can. Spiders would've been great.
But ultimately, it's somewhat anodyne. At first, it felt like it was the name for a Cleveland team in a knockoff video game that couldn't get officially licensed by MLB. It could have been better. It could have been (and certainly
was) worse. In a year or two, it'll roll off the tongue and feel totally normal. The local bridge angle isn't bad, even though naming yourself after statues called the Guardians of
Traffic is certainly a choice.
Come to think of it, most baseball team names aren't great in and of themselves, but merely old and thus nostalgia-provoking.

I mean, but for nostalgia, no one would never name a team "Red Sox" now.
I too thought of Guardians of the Galaxy, and then thought of the last team to be named after something in a movie, the Toronto Raptors. I actually think that Raptors worked well; not sure how Guardians will feel, but I guess it was named after statues in a bridge, not a movie franchise.

Named after the mythical creature, its portrayal in the Pirates of the Caribbean or the Clash of the Titans, or the ill-fated election-related lawsuit?

At the time Stanford changed names, Griffins got strong consideration.

i love "the slac-ers!"
for san francisco, the "golden gaters" makes me smile.
and, if we can go back to animals, the stanford "unicorns," for its financial start-up double meaning.

It's a pretty dumb name but the winged G baseball logo is slick. Naming a baseball team after some statues, meh, but my general principle is the more art deco the better, so I might just have to buy a hat.
