Oh, got it. The team overall won't be as good (for sure agree), which means this specific player isn't as good (disagree).

Hard to imagine Stanford winning the conference in 2013 without Gaffney. Wilkerson, Wright and Young were good, but Hogan was actually the second leading rusher that year. (And Ty Montgomery was a beast, of course.)
I have no idea if Austin Jones will produce Gaffney-like numbers--1709 rushing yards, 5.2 ypa, 21 rushing TDs. As always, it will depend on his teammates, especially the offensive line. But note that in 2020 Jones went for 550 rushing yards, 4.4 ypa and 9 rushing TDs, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Comparing the 2013 defense--featuring Shayne Skov plus NFL draft picks Murphy, Reynolds, Gardner, Richards, Carter, Anderson, Parry--with the 2021 defense, on the other hand, is a much more depressing exercise...

It wasn't just the defense. The 2013 offense included Peat, Yankey, Fleming, Montgomery, Gaffney, Hewitt, and Hogan who ended up playing in the NFL and Wilkes and Danser who made all conference teams. That's not counting Hooper, Murphy or Garnett who were young and weren't yet starting (or playing at all in Hooper's case, unfortunately). I don't think we'll see a similar level of achievement from players on offense from the current roster.

Patriots.com (below) said that he was activated for that game but not included in the 45, and he has no statistics so I'm inclined to believe that he wasn't on the game day roster although it's certainly possible. Not a material difference either way if he didn't play.
Last year, was released by the Patriots on the final cut-down on Sept. 3, 2016, and signed to the practice squad on Oct. 17, 2016, then added to the 53-man roster on Oct. 29. Gaffney was inactive for the Buffalo game on Oct. 30 and released by the Patriots from the 53-man roster on Nov. 10, 2016 before re-joining the Patriots practice squad on Nov. 12.

My gut recollection of Gaffney at Stanford was workhorse. Akin to Toby, without the number of dazzling plays (but maybe my memory is shot).
2 specific plays stand out with Gaff, one good, one bad:
The good: Gaffney's 53 yard (?) TD run at ASU in P12 championship game. Talk about a tone-setter!
The bad: Fourth down and 2-3; Rose Bowl against MSU; shotgun draw to Gaffney (which hadn't worked all game) smothered in the backfield. And that play call was made by Stanford's brain trust AFTER a timeout. Good god that was hideous (and not Gaffney's fault).

I agree it is within the realm of possibility, given that the Jone's 2020 numbers extrapolate to 1283 yards, 4.4 ypc, and 21 touchdowns over a 14 game season, though I would be very pleasantly surprised if we made the Pac-12 conference championship, and even a bowl game is not guaranteed. If you add the fact he brings another year of experience, and that most of the offensive line will be back, and that a new QB and WR corps will mean that we will likely be leaning on the running game more, comparable numbers (or at least comparable per-game numbers) can reasonably be expected. Would love to see his ypc move up a bit closer to 5, which may be a tad more difficult if opposing defenses load up to stop the run.

Austin Jones is a good running back and, I am sure, a sterling young man. What he is not, at least up until this point, is another Tyler Gaffney.

Tyler Gaffney was not a Tyler Gaffney until his (fifth year) senior season. Austin Jones is starting his third season.

Well, sure, gailtate, but we're all hoping he is, right?
Putting aside results, here are Gaffney's rushing attempts per game for his four years at Stanford:
2009: 1.8
2010: 6.0
2011: 5.7
2013: 23.6
And here are Jones' rushing attempts per game for his two years at Stanford:
2019: 3.8
2020: 21.0
Keeping in mind that Gaffney played 14 games in 2013 and Jones played only 6 in 2020, it's not unreasonable to expect that Jones' workload in 2021 will be 2013 Gaffney-esque. We'll see if his body can handle the punishment and if he can improve his ypc to 5.0 or better.

Tyler Gaffney was an athletic freak with 4.49 speed (laser-timed, NFL Combine) at 220 lbs. Someone mentioned the TD vs. ASU in the CCG. The other guys were going backwards.
Austin Jones clearly doesn’t have that kind of size or speed, but he’s got instincts and “natural wiggle”. I enjoy watching him and expect to see more.
