Comment: We’ll say it up front: For Stanford to seriously contend in the North, it needs David Shaw’s best coaching job. The lack of creampuffs in the non-conference lineup will increase the physical toll of the long season and substantially narrow the path to bowl eligibility.

There's nothing there that we don't know.  I'm a little bit surprised he pencils in "upsets" against Washington (penciled in second place in the North) and Cal (third place), but that may be because they are home games, and lately we've had their number.  But 5-7 is where I had pegged the team, so I can't really find too much to quibble with there.

The 2016 Rose Bowl feels like a long time ago, in galaxy far, far away. I just hope injuries this season are few, far between and minor.

Am feeling optimistic about Oline (and RBs) in terms of quality and depth - I am basing my hopes of 6-6 or better on some old school tree football i.e. game/clock control via run game which allows McKee time to grow into the roll early before showing why he was seen as an elite prospect (3rd best QB Pro QB in his class) - big concern is defence across the board but especially LOS and tackling i.e. fundamentals... if we can control tempo that should take some of pressure of defence and perhaps some playmakers emerge... Honestly think if Oline can be very good we could win 8/9 but if not the floor is real low.

The two early OOC 'away' games will be a great test as they are surely inferior talent wise (?) but will be challenging circumstances but if we get basics right we should win - not too fussed if we lose to USC as long as competitive altho they are unpredictable so again control LOS on offence and don't get blown off ball on D and we can keep game close then who knows...

U$C is now air raid all the time. They could probably kill us by just pounding the ball, but that is no longer in their game-plan. We will get to find out if our linebackers are as quick as advertised. If we can take away the YAC on short throws, U$C may have plenty of trouble. It the past, they could complete a 2 yard pass and make 15 yards most of the time. If we can stop that, we have a chance.

Great points Goose... so tackling will be key... defo important to get the D some recovery time on the sidelines - would love some of those 8+min drives then a quick 3 and out for USC to just take control of tempo...

from the time I started attending in 1953 Stanford and Cal would never play The SC and UCLA games at home in the same year. The locations were flip flopped and we would see SC and UCLA every two years. Ditto the Oregon’s and Washington’s. Wilmer should know this.

So I’m voiding him as an expert and now say 9-3.

I think worst case, 7-5.  I have much more faith in the QB talent, and lots of other programs have productive offenses with first time QBs.  McKee was the best QB in Calif two years ago; West knows the Offense; and Ari Patu can mix it up. 
The rest of the Offense is deep at skill spots and talented, and we will score more and convert more third downs.  The O-Line gels. 
The front 7 on Defense will show more agility than many expect, especially at LB. 
The corners will hold, and we are vulnerable at Safety unless we get a quicker pass rush.  
I think the Offense keeps the ball and we go bowling.  Huskies are a tad overrated, but Oregon is the toughest mark on the slate. 
We have beaten USC in the Shaw-Harbaugh Era at least three times when they are rated in Top Ten.  
WINS:  KSST, VANDY, @USC, AZST, WASH, @ORST, @WAST, UCLA, and KalSucks.  That's NINE, and we lose one of those for 8-4.

Seems harsh, BC, and borderline hypocritical, as I can’t go anywhere on social media without seeing an ad for Pi, the “digital currency developed by Stanford pHDs.”

The question is whether it was harsh towards Cal or harsh towards cryptocurrency?

As we well know, being a Stanford grad (or PhD) is hardly a protection against committing fraud.  In fact, the appeal to authority is part of what permits the fraud to perpetuate.

Has anyone ever compiled a list of Wilner's Stanford football predictions vs actual results?  For a hometown sportswriter, he "seems" pre-disposed to be negative about Stanford.  I'd be curious if the facts bear that out?
