Thank you Troy.
First two bullets are downers. Is there any other way to read them??

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - winflop - 08-25-2021

First point is particularly discouraging. I don't think this is Shaw holding things close to the vest at this point. This is now a major cause for concern for me. West is highly mediocre at best.

He'd previously said that he expected to announce things by the Monday before the K State game (so Aug 30) so this is nothing new, except for leaving the possibility of playing two guys open.

West was surprisingly quite competent against Oregon.

McKee is better.

I think West is a competent QB, but if we are going to win many games this year we will need a QB who is better than merely competent.
McKee could be that guy.

The team’s strengths are in the O-line and its deep depth chart of running backs. It’s frustrating, but I’d guess that Shaw is weighting pretty heavily the potential for really bad plays (ints, sacks, possibly fumbles) more so than potential for highlight plays (including a long QB scramble).

As fans, our best hope is that the line and running game can carry most of the load.

Winflop, welcome to the polite tea party that is the Cardboard.

Nah, I was a little too harsh and edited my statement. The broader points remain:
1. Jack West is not going to lead this team to any kind of successful season
2. If Tanner McKee isn't head and shoulders above West that is a major cause of concern

I don't care how good your OL & running game are. If the QB can't deliver the ball when called upon.

And all of this says nothing about the defense, which for me is an even bigger reason to be concerned.

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - Phogge - 08-26-2021

Cordova's first start against Penn State: Over 300 yards passing. A close loss. Never lived up to the hype. Probably giving him #16 didn't help. Not receiving Walsh's coaching a big no help.

Whatever happens with McKee up front probably doesn't jibe with his hype. Perhaps by mid season with the rust off we'll have a better idea if he's the answer. But they can't let any year go by without a QB recruit. After all if McKee throws for a bunch and they win a bunch his class is eligible to be drafted.

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - Papa John - 08-26-2021

2007: LD Crow
2008: Andrew Luck
2009: Josh Nunes and Taysom Hill (never attended)
2010: Brett Nottingham (Dallas Lloyd took a 2-year LDS mission)
2011: Kevin Hogan and Evan Crower
2012: (Dallas Lloyd)
2013: Ryan Burns
2014: Keller Chryst
2015: --- offered two: Ricky Town and Brandon Wimbush
2016: KJ Costello
2017: Davis Mills
2018: Jack West (Tanner McKee took a 2-year LDS mission)
2019: --- offered one late: Ryan Hilinski
2020: (Tanner McKee)
2021: Ari Patu
2022: Ashton Daniels

If I got the above correct, we've had two years in the Shawbaugh era without an incoming QB, and they both happened with Shaw as head coach. I don't think we offered any QBs in 2020, apparently to avoid hurting McKee's feelings? I don't think we offered anyone other Ari Patu in 2021, but he committed early. But we've offered five QBs for 2022, so maybe the staff have decided that no-QB classes are a bad thing.

So you get Ryan Burns? It is unclear to me where the "better than nothing" point lies. Any QB you get takes up coaching time and reps. If there is nobody out there that you think will help you win (that you can get) maybe it is better to pass and hope for better next year? Naturally the backup QB is the least important guy on the team until he is the most important guy on the team, but taking a guy every year doesn't ensure you will have a "good" QB. Jack West is certainly "a guy", but he isn't getting lots of respect on this board. Some years you may get lots worse. Is that a good strategy? I am not so sure it is.

Stanford won't win many games unless they can return to being a dominant, ball control running team, something they haven't been since 2017. Anxious to see what kind of schemes the new OL coach brings. I'm a big fan of Power O and hopeful to see its return. Also wouldn't mind seeing an expanded package for Isaiah Sanders at QB.

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - CardinalSagehen - 08-26-2021

I love how everyone thinks they know that Jack West is worse than Tanner McKee based on two starts.  One of those starts against UCLA was awful, but in fairness to West, that whole team was awful and the OL had been completely decimated.  The other start against Oregon was pretty respectable, given that he only found out he was playing 90 mins before the game.  He looked competent and he didn't make enormous mistakes. I've observed that his accuracy on passes over the middle is really pretty good - he hits guys in stride.

I also love how everyone gave Davis Mills a pass for being rusty against Colorado, but they didn't give West a pass for having no reps and no prep as the starter for the Oregon game.

Furthermore, I've seen Tanner McKee throw some really bad balls in the limited practices that I've watched.  He might be great, but my point is that nobody really knows.  I agree that we should start him because his athleticism brings an added dimension, a la Kevin Hogan, and he has better raw tools.

Like the cheese on a casserole at a college dining hall, a quarterback's ability to scramble for key first downs and touchdowns can cover up a multitude of evils...

All very fair and I would love to find out that West has turned the corner and that he'll be the next Elway, but based on the muted commentary so far,  I interpret the no QB decision as "no one is stepping up" rather than "they're both playing lights out" and making it an impossible choice.

I didn't hear Shaw's press conference yesterday, but on the previous one all he could muster was "the good news is that they can run both the offense".  We still have 9 days to gameday...

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - terry - 08-26-2021

The starting QB against K-State will not necessarily be the starting QB for the rest of the season. Shaw has a history of changing his starting QB during the season -- Nunes/Hogan (2012), Burns/Chryst (2016), Chryst/Costello (2017).

RE: Shaw Wednesday media Zoom thoughts - Papa John - 08-26-2021

Hogan replaced Nunes in a game at Colorado in 2012, and it was clear during that game--he was 18-23 for 184 yds and 2 TDs and rushed for 48 yds--that he was a significant upgrade. Costello replaced an injured Chryst versus UCLA in 2017, and, even though Shaw initially alternated KJ and Burns, it was clear by the end of the game--13-19 for 123 yds and 2 TDs, rushed for 15 yds and 1 hard-earned TD--that Costello was a significant upgrade.

West was thrown into two very difficult situations, first versus UCLA in 2019--15-32 for 143 yrds, -23 yds rushing--and then at Oregon in 2020--13-19 for 154 yds and 1 yd rushing. He was obviously better at Oregon--Stanford's team was much better--but he wasn't able to produce scores like Hogan and Costello did.

Tanner McKee didn't fare any better versus Oregon--he was 3-7 for 62 yds, but academically he was a true freshman who hadn't played football for two years prior to training camp.

The game evidence so far indicates that West is not the next Hogan/Costello. For McKee, there's not enough game evidence one way or the other, so hope is alive.

When the QB competition is close, it seems that Shaw usually goes with the more experienced--i.e. more years in the system--player. So I would expect him to name West the starter for K-State.

Translation: Stanford and its overpaid coach find themselves in a season "between quarterbacks": Mills and the Next Big Thing. Unless McKee blossoms like the azaleas at The Masters, I don't anticipate the NBT this season.
