QB U.? - gailtate - 09-03-2021

2009 - 2015: Luck and Hogan. A remarkable run for Stanford football, esp. at QB: seven years, seven bowls that included five big ones. Then four years of lesser ones. More than I ever expected. Since then? A sparse cupboard (relative to the Bowl Years). This program needs a jump-start. Like the electric stimulation that heart specialists give to jolt cardiac arrhythmia. We could stand a jolting rhythm correction.

RE: QB U.? - slide - 09-03-2021

remarkable run by QBs not recruited by Shaw.

Hogan developed under Shaw. And IIRC, he was not that highly regarded coming out of HS.  Costello and Mills were both good recruits. But/for injuries, Mills would have been next great Stanford QB.

Chryst was highly regarded.  Poor mechanics.  Which always surprised me given his lineage.

We shall see how the position looks this year.

Any truth in the trope that Shaw was thumbs-down on Luck and that it was Harbs' call?

related to this wasn't Luck Harbaugh's 2nd or 3rd choice?  As I vaguely recall Landry Jones and maybe one other were higher on his recruiting list that year.

Well, it certainly was Harbaugh’s call.  Whose else would it be?  I have heard that Landry Jones was his first choice.  But what does any of this have to do with what’s going on now?

2016 - 2019 (I'm ignoring 2020, where we had a winning season, but there was a pandemic).  How many four season periods in Stanford history featured three bowl games?

Shaw's the HC and presumably has the final vote on QB recruits, that's what.

But Harbaugh was the HC and as a former QB definitely had he final vote on QB recruits when Luck was being recruited, and, ironically, preferred Landry Jones.

yes, per another coach on that staff.  worth noting that Luck wasn't Harbs' 1st QB offer in that cycle.

Not many, but of course the requirements to get to a bowl game have loosened up over the years.
Stanford went through a period of 11 straight winning seasons from 1968-1978. Had today's bowl requirements been in effect they would have probably gone to bowl games in most if not all of those years.

That was an interesting stretch of time in the program for me.
I was just becoming a fan, but lived far away and didn't ever know details of what was going on in the program, and probably too young to care about anything more than game day.
The latter-mid part of that run, Jack Christiansen was the coach. He had five straight winning seasons, finished second or third in the conference four of five years, then was fired. A timeline/result presumably unique in Stanford history. Then after the firing was announced, he was carried onto the field for his final Big Game. So, his players apparently liked him, and he won more than he lost, but presumably his bosses felt more was possible and hired Walsh.
Strangely (to me) Walsh didn't have a better conference record than Christiansen, but was more successful on the non-conference side.

And 17 straight seasons without a losing record from 1964-1980.

RE: QB U.? - JohnR34231 - 09-04-2021

Now 17-0.
The question has shifted from if we can win to if we can get on the scoreboard.
Actually the defense hasn't played too badly in the second half.
