Modern football - Phogge - 09-04-2021
Watched the end of the Oregon game. Firstly Julie Haener's son played a great game for Fresno in a loud and hostile environment.
Secondly Oregon flashed why it's been the leagues premier program. Team speed both sides of the ball. Their 6th year QB is quick and decisive on the zone read and he can throw too.
Stanford's offense is slow and has nothing to overcome the lack of talent on the OL. If you can't throw against a three man rush these days then you can't compete period. They desperately need a complete makeover (scheme and personnel) but David Shaw won't allow it. It would take three or four years anyway.
David Shaw is Stanford's Maginot Line.

We looked very poor today, but I am not sure Oregon is the aspirational marker/the league's premier team. They didn't even win the division last year, and only played in the Fiesta Bowl because of a COVID technicality. I don't think there is a premier team in the Pac. If anything, I might look to a team like Ohio State, that Oregon will interestingly play next week in Columbus. Unless Oregon plays significantly better than they did today, I don't expect the game will be close.

Brian Kelly has run circles around David Shaw in building Notre Dame into a consistent program, by acting with the urgency needed to win in the College Football marketplace, David Shaw, OTOH, has epitomized complacency, resting on laurels, and prioritizing his own comfort over continuous improvement.

A consistent program maybe, but they have literally not won a big NY6 bowl game under Brian Kelly (two playoff losses, a NC loss and a Fiesta Bowl loss). They have gotten crushed in the playoffs twice (and in the Natty Championship that they reached because of the controversial ending of our game in South Bend), and since they are independents, no conference championships to compete for except getting crushed by Clemson last year.
I also don't think Notre Dame is the bar either. Like I said, there are a handful of programs (Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama) that are consistent winners. And does our school profile match any of those schools? Probably not.

We are NEVER going to be any of those schools for any substantive length of time (decade or more). That is not the bar.
Shaw is a victim of his own success, and the program has steadily declined since the roster lost its last Harbaugh recruits. College football has bypassed David Shaw, and he refuses to evolve to meet it. Sadly, we have a spineless AD who won't tell Shaw to either evolve or exit, but that's what is needed.

Yes, and evolution would require Shaw to overhaul his coaching staff and hire some dynamic, uncomfortable coaches who challenge him and push him to make necessary changes. Excellent leaders surround themselves with bright minds that challenge the status quo, are aiming higher and are not content with mediocrity. Shaw appears not to be that kind of leader, and therein lies the problem.
