I think it happened about the same as when Louisville and Pittsburgh joined the Atlantic Coast Conference, Utah and Colorado joined the Pacific-12 Conference and Oklahoma and Texas joined the Southeastern Conference.

No big deal. I cross from the Pacific Plate to the NA Plate every day to pick up my mail.

Since when is Evanston, Illinois in the Northwest?
Seriously, I think the conference started in Texas, which--with the exception of California--took up the southwestern corner of the US for a number of decades.

Of the 6 founding HBCUs (all in Texas) in 1920, only Prairie View remains in the conference.
It and Texas Southern are the only Texas schools in the SWAC now.

This is great. Low cost, high salience, good warm fuzzies all the way around. Good move.

Good point, but I'm pretty sure that Northwestern University was founded long after the Louisiana Purchase.
But back to the SWAC, I don't see any SWAC opponents listed for the Stanford men's team, so I wonder who and how they will set up the schedule for future years.

True, but at the time of the University's founding, The only states further west than Illinois were Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Minnesota had not yet become a state
It was created as a University "to serve the Northwest Territories"
