College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - metsjetsfan - 11-01-2011

https://www.facebook.com/groups/240481992674731/

From group description,

"Before last Saturday's epic win at the Coliseum, a few of us were lucky enough to chat up Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler after GameDay. We told them we hoped they would make their first trip to the Farm for the Oregon game. Both said they wanted to make it happen, but needed our assurance that the Stanford community would rally in the wee hours of the morning to demonstrate how much we love our team.

Considering this will be the biggest game in school history and one of the five biggest games in college football this season, we absolutely deserve this spotlight.

Join this group and invite everybody you know who will roll out of bed with clever signs and loud voices the morning of Nov. 12. If this thing blows up by midweek, maybe we can tip off ESPN and make it clear to them that a trip to Stanford will be worth their while.

Let's go Card!"

800+ members and counting.

I doubt 800 people would actually show up, and the group did not mention that "wee hours of the morning" means 6AM.  Nonetheless, it shows that there is a movement on campus to make it happen.

Ducks win in Seattle is far from a lock. Loss would be a visit breaker.

Best to revisit this with gusto on Sunday should things play out right.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - fullmetal - 11-02-2011

W/L, not publicity, is all that matters right now...oh, and an Oklahoma State loss.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - unclechuck - 11-02-2011

fullmetal,

GameDay dividends are not just about PR pop that may or may not impact BCS standings for this year.

Ducks were able to turn their recent GameDay visit into a highly successful recruiting weekend, getting two verbal commits and greatly enhancing their standing with two other high visibility recruits.

Plus, it can be a fun campus event and an opportunity to showcase the campus (while there's snow or sleet in other places). That's a stand alone bonus for the whole University.

I disagree.  Stanford has to beat Oregon to win the North, even if Oregon loses at Washington.  So no matter what, the game is brobdingnagian.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - fullmetal - 11-02-2011

unclechuck is right in that there are rewards to hosting CGD (college gameday).  I guess I'm unsure of whether a crowd will actually turn up.  CGD will only go to Palo Alto if there are many, many enthusiastic Stanford fans for their stage backdrop at all times of their broadcast.

Hopefully recruits of the Stanford-caliber won't be swayed by one game.  If you're coming to Stanford, you come here to go to Stanford, not just to play football for a winning program (that feels ridiculously good to type).

Uh Huh!  If either team loses this weekend, then GameDay goes to Happy Valley.  Bank on it.  Happy Valley has Joe Pa and his 409 or 410 wins.  Penn State is now leading one of the B1G divisions, and Penn State is in the better time zone for College GameDay logistics.

But with Oregon standing as a 16 point favorite and Stanford coming in as a 21 point favorite, odds are good this game has GameDay potential.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - Treebound - 11-02-2011

I heard from both Stanford and USC friends that there was a large group of Stanford fans at College Game Day in the Coliseum at 6:30am on Saturday.  My guess is that those were mostly students as I saw their RVs parked in lot 2.  The students will rally en masse if Game Day comes to Palo Alto...I'm sure plenty of pledges will be spending the night.  I'm up for taking my kids down there for the fun and I'm sure a number of local alums will do the same followed by a good breakfast across the street at Hobbees!

Given that the ESPN production team has already reached out to the AD, if both Stanford and Oregon win, I think it's a lock!  I'm still curious to see where they'll set up... Angel Field with the stadium as a backdrop, the Oval, in front of Hoo Tow?!  Just win, boys!  We are still enjoying the after glow of Saturday night's victory!  Savior every moment of this season!

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - FarmBoy - 11-02-2011

How many people do they need? 1,000? 2,000? I wouldn't be surprised if up to 2K-3K would rally for this kind of event. All of the Freshmen dorms will get up to half their students there. The frats will certainly show up. And it really does feel like the students are into this football season.

The bar has been raised.

First, it is not good enough to show up at 6:30AM because ESPNU's portion starts at 6AM.  The band, the students and others would need to be around at 5AM on Saturday.  (That will make a long day, so I hope this doesn't zap their energy later in the day when they could actually help the team.)

But as I said the bar has been raised.  College GameDay is ALREADY up and running at Bama and it is Thursday afternoon.  And yes, they have students and Bama fans standing and making noise.  Amazing what people will do to be involved with an ESPN production.

My guess is the best place for the stage will be Angel Field.  The stadium press box would be in the background from that location.  It already has lights (and that is very helpful at 5AM).  The track & the infield are relatively free of activities on game Saturdays.  And yet, it is close to the stadium and the game action.  And I would think they could keep the stage up all day and into the night at that location.

Sunken Diamond would be another option.  The Rugby field, the oval and the quad would all be options too.  Not every College Gameday has been next to the stadium, and ESPN has used iconic campus locations in the past.  Also, since the game is much later in the day they could use the Stadium and have the fans in the stands.  They have used that trick at Wisconsin and other places.

While Stanford does not have thousands ready to waste days standing next to orange fences, Stanford does have space.

Yeah...hell, they might even play college football on a Tuesday night.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - Farm93 - 11-03-2011

Wikipedia's College GameDay location history page notes that the November 12th show will be at....PENN STATE.

So does Wikipedia know something we don't know?  Nov 19 and Nov 26 are still listed as TBA, so I suspect this is a new "fact".  Could not find where this Wikipedia fact came from, but I have always seen the Nebraska vs. Penn State game as an ideal game for College GameDay (two big programs, Rose Bowl implications, East Coast time zone, Joe Pa's 409 wins)

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - dabigv13 - 11-03-2011

...aaaaaand it now says TBA. Because I changed it back. Because the edit history for the anonymous guy who put that in was: an article on Harcum College, some small PA college, Lars Ulrich, the bassist for Metallica, Transexualism, and Polyamory. And most importantly because there is no other independently verifiable source for that. His initial edit listed it as Joe Paterno's last home game, something else that is possible, but not knowable at this point.

Come on Farm93, didn't your mama teach you not to trust everything you see on wikipedia?

Am I the only one who couldn't care less about GameDay? And if I find out that GameDay wants to set up near the tailgater I attend, I would move from "don't care in the least" to "don't want it."

You're not Robinson Crusoe on this, Terry.

Re: College Gameday for Stanford-Oregon - Treebound - 11-04-2011

Come on Terry, the national coverage is good for the program.  Recruits watch College Game Day and to see it set up at Stanford is a good thing.    My worry is that the Ducks and Stanford have already been on the show.  Stanford has never hosted and this will be the biggest game in the land that weekend (assuming we both take care of business).  Number 3 taking on number 6 is BIG and we have all had this game circled since last year.    Going from Alabama vs LSU to Stanford vs Oregon makes all the sense in the world.  Bring it!

Yes, that was why I noted it was a Wikipedia "fact" that I could not verify elsewhere.

Still suspect it comes down to that venue or Stanford.  For those that don't believe in College Gameday, it would be big.  It would not impact the game too much, but would be tremendous for long term recruiting.  The entire week ESPN normally promotes the venue and has several features that run as Saturday approaches.  That is free publicity that any program would love to get.

The thing is...Robinson Crusoe's kids very likely watch College Gameday.

This reminds me of the scene from Chariots of Fire where Sir John Gielgud tells Ben Cross that his new approach to training doesn't comport with the more traditional amateur philosophy -- he's got a point, but that train left the station a long time ago.  [And, of course, Sir John and his buddy didn't seem too disappointed at the end...]

I'm, too, of the vintage that really doesn't like the non-traditional uniforms and colors, but the really good players that I really DO like watching play [and win] certainly seem to, as does my high school son...who has been rooting for a Stanford College GameDay appearance for a couple of years.  If they build it [a College GameDay stage, that is], he [and a boatload of his friends] will come...even at 5:00 am!

And I'll probably tag along.  As has been noted, it will be easy to walk over to Hobee's afterwards for some coffee cake.
