Shaw should take one of those NFL jobs now, if he still can. Stanford will never put an end to this mess until Shaw's stock is below zero, and then it will be too late. And, for what it's worth, Shaw 'system' may work better in the NFL where everyone can play like the sportbots he wants on every down. The only time this 'system' looked effective was when the team had first round draft picks, and multiple picks in the top 5 rounds. College coaches tend to look good with that kind of talent. If Shaw can't choose between McKee and West in his own camp, how likely is he to spot the best talent in a sea of high school recruits?
Come ON Stanford, just print a few measly tickets for the elderly people in the audience already. How cheap are you!! Enhanced experience my right foot. The WiFi was overwhelmed; droves of elderly people didn't know what to do; it's just cruel. And you better hang on to us old-timers, cuz you're not making a lot of new football fans these days....
Turn down that ridiculous PA system. It's not creating a buzz or excitement. It's simply obnoxious to most of the paid visitors. If the student body wants to hear a constant beat of dance club music during a football game, turn it on over there. Let the rest of us enjoy the game. Jeez Louise. We sit near a speaker and my ears are still ringing. OSHA wouldn't allow it; why does Stanford???
Not every third down is the OMG most exciting play in the history of football. Not sure if that's still Steve Frost, but for the love of God, follow the game and stop screaming at us when least warranted. Stanford can only create excitement on the field -- piping in loud dance club music and pretending like every third down is epic, is just annoying.
Re the student announcers for the band: t
hey need a new schtick. That stilted cue-card reading drone isn't funny -- it's just more over-amplified noise people are trying to block out. Also, I'm wildly pro-vaccine (got my booster on Friday actually) but why get all smug and condescending about it. It wasn't funny. It wasn't helpful. So why? We should be building bridges, not 'cleverly' mocking from a mountain top.
On the plus side, the Covid verification tents were well-staffed and ran smoothly enough. Pretty sure I could have gotten verified by showing them my old Blockbuster Video Card, since they barely glanced at it, but at least it wasn't a logjam.
The whole art of the Arthur P. Barnes National Anthem is to have a single solo trumpet replicate the stirring soul and spirt of a lone bugle on the range -- in the solemn spirit of taps -- and then build to a crescendo as the woodwinds and the brass instruments join in stages. When you BLARE the solo trumpet over the PA, and then turn off the PA for the crescendo, it just sounds like the PA system malfunctioned at an unfortunate point in the song.
Oh, and the mighty Beavers beat USC even more soundly than Stanford did, extinguishing any lingering hopes that this team "has it in them" when they want it. They might, and I hope they do, but that USC game says a lot more about USC than Stanford at this point.
Go Stanford. Beat the ducks. We want 'bama. Etc.

Having first round draft picks can make everybody look good. However, as USC proves year after year, it isn't a given. From that point of view I am much happier having Shaw, who even you agree wins with lots of talent on the field, that (coach de jour) at USC who does not. I also think you kind of answered your own question. Shaw did "spot" McKee, or his staff did, and he got him to come to Stanford. Enough "skill" to do that. Given how McKee played early in the first half last Saturday, the main difference between him and West two years ago is that McKee is taller. He can see over the surrounding rushers. Neither got it done. At times like that yes, it may be hard to tell who is better. Second half, different story however.

I so agree with almost all of the rest of this post. The trumpeter used to get the stadium dead quiet while he played. He also had to practice a lot to be able to fill the acoustically larger old stadium. You had to be good to do it, and every mistake would be obvious. Now, it might as well be a recording. It also makes me dizzy when the band is in front of me and the sound is behind me. This is a joke. Either play it as it was designed or don't play the arrangement at all. On a similar note, the band is just pathetically small. It is almost too small to be viable. Granted, lots of freshman that may join the band haven't yet had the chance, but right now it is way too few.

This presumes the purpose of the music is entirely for the fans. I bet the players prefer it. It must be kind of deflating to play in a "library," so I could see the sound effects amping up the players. It also helps get the fans louder. When the Ducks first brought their flashy clothes and constant uniform changes, I bet there were fans in the stands who didn't like it. "Wear the same damn clothes!," "The unis from the 1970s were the best!" etc. When Miami started awarding players ridiculously giant "turnover chains," gold plastic necklaces to reward players who got a turnover, there were probably some fans who found them too gaudy and ridiculous. Why not just a good old-fashioned pat on the back and a high-five after a turnover? But many people seem to like it, and the players definitely seem to like it. We're in a different era. I know when I get to Sharks games the PA system is much, much louder, and their sound effects are even more over-the-top, so it's not like Stanford is unique, or even particularly loud, in this respect.

The bit about the vaccines got a mild chuckle out of me. I can't recall the whole thing -- I remember there were two announcers and one didn't want a vaccine because he was concerned about microchips. The Stanford band is a scatter band. They take stories from the headlines and make jokes. In the 90s, they made jokes about Oregon's endangered spotted owl and if I recall correctly the governor of Oregon wanted to band banned in the state. Also in the 90s, during the Notre Dame game, they had a flying nun in costume and band members searched the field for precious potatoes during a "potato famine." Even worse, the dollies dressed like devils with horns and little red tails. Such inappropriate and immodest attire! During the Rose Bowl, the band so inflamed the sensibilities of the Iowa state legislature several members wanted to pass a law banning any professors at any university in the state from collaborating with any researcher at Stanford university, which would have inflicted untold and incalculable damage to Stanford's research. The Stanford band is a scatter band. They take stories from the headline and make jokes. This is what they do. I think Harvard and Rice have scatter bands, and a number of other colleges. I actually think they have improved because with the better PA system, I can actually hear what they are saying. I love the band's general zaniness, but would agree the band's halftime shows aren't nearly as funny as they think they are. They have been drinking their own kool-aid as to what is funny for as long as I can remember. Given the fact that it's a pretty big live audience, I would think someone on campus could make it funnier more consistently.

I agree that the system was slipshod, kind of to be expected during the first game. It appeared maybe 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 UCLA fans were not wearing a wristband. Maybe they tore them off after entry, but I expect rules should be enforced consistently, even if the review process is rushed and imperfect.

Having a head coach fired and getting a new coach two games into the season might have some kind of impact.

True, but apparently not enough or not in the right direction. For way too long at U$C the players have been allowed to play just about any way they wanted. It wasn't a team, it was a happening. You don't change that in a week, or in ten weeks. Seriously, the underclassmen probably look at the interim coach a chuckle "Next year, I will still be here, and you won't".

I want to second this point about the awful "in-game experience" at the stadium. The last time I attended a game there was Big Game in 2017 after not having attended a game for a few years (I no longer live in the area.) I was shocked to discover that they were playing music - some God-awful pop garbage I might add - BETWEEN plays. What genius got the bright idea to do that?! I mean, maybe it's because whoever that nimrod was assumed that fans need to be "entertained" between plays. I would feel almost as passionately against this practice even if they had chosen to play my favorite music. The point is that YOU DON'T PLAY MUSIC BETWEEN PLAYS.
What a clown-car operation at Stanford.

+ 1 billion! That guy was so effing obnoxious I left at halftime. Seriously. Watched the remainder outside on TV.
Also agree with no mic of the band, especially during Anthem. Sad.
It is somehow fitting that the only thing Stanford got right on game day for the fans was the most useless/unnecessary thing: the vax check.
Maybe not totally useless, but pretty low on the totem poll of important things in outdoor setting with plenty of seats everywhere. (And the continued vax check is only going to get more embarrassing as attendance declines throughout the remainder of the home season).

I was having a booster-weary weekend and just toughing it out in the stadium. 52 seasons and counting, so a little vaccine hangover wasn't about to stop me. Things that normally just bug me -- like everything I listed above -- were really getting to me though. Apologies if I came across a wee tiny bit negative. :)
RE the PA system, I think part of the issue is that we sit in a hadicap row on the main mezzanine (and the row directly in front of that). The speakers are directly overhead and the acoustics intensify it. 20 rows down, I'm sure its tolerable. But where we sit, it's simply too loud to be safe. Louder than a rock concert and loud enough to cause physical pain from time to time. Truly inexcusable for a University otherwise on the forefront of advancing human health, in my opinion.

There
is a Santa Clara County noise ordinance:
https://cpd.sccgov.org/sites/g/files/exjcpb706/files/NP_Noise_Ordinance.pdf
I'm not exactly sure how it applies to Stanford University property, but I would encourage someone who attends the games to check it out. It's a matter of public safety.

Re the student announcers for the band: they need a new schtick.
Etc.
Wow, as a current student, we couldn't even hear the music in the student section lol. We wanted it to be turned up.
Seriously? It was loud as heck in section 131. And I'm hard of hearing and took my hearing aids out.
