TrumpCard - 10-09-2021
Next game, next man up. The ASU game was forgettable to say the least. But the Card has an extra day off this week before playing up in Pullman. I’m also glad to get the Cougs in mid-October as it may not be quite as cold and rainy as some games up there.
Still a lot of guys out with injury/COVID, so the team again will be stretched thin and relying on younger players, but not much the team can do about that except say next man up. Stanford still has the more talented roster. WSU’s first string QB has recovered from his knee injury, but I suspect WSU will have it’s share of guys “working through some issues,” just like Stanford has. Even at full health, WSU was not predicted to cause much trouble for teams this year, and the home loss to Utah State supported those predictions.
The bigger issues for the WSU team are non-football related. Their head coach remains unvaccinated AFAIK, and one of their non-core players was seriously injured in a shooting earlier in the season. Those are some big distractions. Here’s an article on their not-too-bright head coach:
https://www.cougcenter.com/2021/10/7/22714830/nick-rolovich-contract-vaccine-exemptions-cause. I hope the WSU team doesn’t infect any Stanford players during the game!
After WSU and the bye, hopefully the team will be a bit closer to full health when it hosts UW.

I read somewhere that Washington now had a requirement that all state employees had to be vaccinated and Wazzu's coach said he would comply. Not sure just what the outcome of that was.

Local paper reporting today that he’s seeking a religious exemption from the mandate:
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougars/report-wsu-coach-nick-rolovich-tells-mentor-he-is-applying-for-religious-exemption-from-covid-19-vaccine-mandate/
The article says the specific religious grounds are unclear but that the coach was raised Catholic. Sorry, but I call BS. Catholics support the use of vaccines. He just wants to live in the pre-Copernicus days.

Also, none other than the Pope urge People to get vaccinated. I hear he’s kind of a big deal for Catholics.

Apparent,y, if he is not vaccinated or doesn’t have an exemption by the 18th, state law says he has to be dismissed. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Looks like he will still be coaching next Saturday.
He went to HS at Marin Catholic. He has ignored 6 or 7 entreaties from his former mentor June Jones. His friend was fired as assistant coach at Navy for not getting vaccinated.
The Cougar fans would love for him to be fired and owed nothing.

Long article:
“ “Rolo is Rolo, and he is who he is because of the person he was,” Jones said. “He was a quarterback, kind of his own guy, a leader. He’s been that way as a coach. He believes that he doesn’t need to take it and doesn’t want to take it, and he doesn’t want somebody telling him what to do. But like I said, to me, there’s just too much at stake.””

It's apparently a blind review by a committee that's reviewing all WSU requests. S'pose his request could add on that he's really needed because he's the football coach, fwiw.

He is going to file a CIP for his request saying this shows God must be on his side.

It's incredibly selfish. If he is dismissed, guess what? All of his assistants are going to be dismissed by the next coach. So he's not only messing with his career, his messing with theirs. It would piss me off to no end if I was on the staff in Pullman.

Goose - 10-09-2021
I guess I don't much care about the head coach at WSU vax status. If all his players are vaccinated, I suggest our guys don't need to get close to him. I care much more about the game next week. Earlier in the year I think we all mentally figured WSU wasn't very good and this game would be a W for sure. Right now, after beating OSU, WSU is tied with us in the North. Granted, its early still, but after what we saw at ASU, I think nothing is a given. I was figuring after we beat Oregon that we had a very good shot at winning the North, and that OSU was the biggest remaining threat to our doing so. Now, WSU is certainly in the picture. Beating Kal was possibly no big deal, but OSU is another thing entirely.
Also, don't look now but Utah is unbeaten in the PAC-12. BYU and SDSU don't count. ASU Utah next week will tell a big story. We always have trouble with Utah, even at home.

For what it's worth, based on today's ratings, Sagarin and ESPN models both predict:
Stanford BEATS WSU, WASHINGTON, and CAL
Stanford LOSES to Oregon St., Utah, and ND
If it plays out that way (it won't) and with the Redbox (aka SF) bowl cancelled again, a 6-6 record could put Stanford in the L.A. Bowl, or more likely an at-large invite to the Four Seasons Total Landscaping Bowl....
RE: WSU -
Phogge - 10-10-2021
Based on what we’ve seen Stanford could go 5-1 or 0-6. More likely 5-7.

I don’t expect a good bowl, but I’m hoping for a bowl. That extra month of practice would be valuable, especially after the pandemic year, and especially for the green-looking OL. For that reason, I’m really hoping for a win this weekend. It’ll be tough to get to a bowl without this W.

The deadline for either receiving an exemption or getting vaccinated is October 18th.

True, but he's a Jesuit. Loooots of Catholics don't like Jesuits and their emphasis on questioning. My parish priest refused to do baptisms at Santa Clara, said that he didn't consider Jesuits to be Catholics. In fact, it was a given that if you had a class with a Jesuit prof and you didn't argue with him in class, you had no shot at an A. That whole questioning emphasis conflicts with the blind faith part.

Yeah and some of the alums at SI received an email from Father President a few years ago stating that 24 former Jesuit teachers at our school down through the years have been accused of molestation. Argue with them? More like avoid them. All accusations were swept under the rug for years.
