RE: Women's Golf hosts "The Condi" - Spiny_Norman - 10-15-2021

It's a quality field. Besides #2 Stanford, there are 7 other top 25 teams.
No. 5 Oregon
No. 8 Texas
No. 15 UCLA
No. 17 Georgia
No. 18 San Jose State
No. 19 Arizona State
No. 25 Iowa State

This is the next to last event for Stanford in the fall season.

After two rounds, the Cardinal only have a 20 stroke lead. Even the 'B' team is ahead of several of the 'A' teams. This is a dominant team with immense depth, top to bottom. Tomorrow will be interesting to see if they can dominate a third day in a row with so many ranked teams in the field. Rose Zhang is playing like the #1 ranked amateur in the world and would almost have to withdraw to not win her third straight tournament.

RE: Women's Golf hosts "The Condi" - winflop - 10-17-2021

Got to watch all ten of our players on a couple of holes yesterday and was able to follow Rose Zhang for a couple more. If the NCAAs were stroke play you could just hand this team the trophy now. This roster is so unbelievably loaded.

I kinda feel bad for several of our players that are on the "B" team (since it's a home tournament). Many of them would be playing for any other team in this event, and not in the #5 slot. Next year doesn't get any easier for them, either, with Megha Ganne coming in and only Aline Krauter graduating.

Rose Zhang could go pro after this year, but every vibe I get is that she wants to stay & get her degree. She's very conscious of what happened to Michelle Wie, among others who left college after a year or two or went straight from HS to the tour. Rachel Heck will be here for all four years.

RE: Women's Golf hosts "The Condi" - winflop - 10-17-2021

Stanford wins going away at -28, 22 shots ahead of an impressive second-place finish by San Jose St.

Rose Zhang is now 3 for 3, winning this one by 4 strokes.

Most impressive is the depth of Stanford's roster. All five of the players on the "A" team finished in the Top 20, as well as Brooke Seay who was on the "B" team. The "B" team finished 12th out of 18 teams.

1 Zhang -16
T5 Sturdza -5
T7 Krauter -3
T10 Heck -2
18 Seay E
T19 Ye +1

The team has one more tournament in the fall season, the Pac-12 Preview Nov 1-3 at Nanea GC on the Big Island of Hawai'i.

Quote:Freshman Rose Zhang a bogey-free, 4-under 67 on Sunday to lead Stanford women's golf to the Stanford Intercollegiate championship at Stanford Golf Course. Zhang finished with a 16-under 197 for the tournament, tying Rachel Heck's school record for a 54-hole event. The Cardinal finished with a 28-under 824, also matching a school record for 54-hole score, set last season at the NCAA Stanford Regional.

In this tourney, the difference between our A team and our B team was a massive 64 strokes.

yes, but it is great that Brooke Seay, on the B-team, would have had 2 of her scores counted in the team score had she been the fifth player on the A team--indicating high-quality depth of at least one player at this point in the season. And healthy competition for that fifth slot.

Remember that Brooke Seay was a quarter-finalist at the Women's US Amateur this summer. She would be a key player in the starting 5 at every other program in the country. Ye, our current number 5, is a returning All American, runner up in the Pac 12 stroke play, and is currently ranked as the #15 amateur in the world. This team is LOADED.

The final tournament of the fall will be a chance for somebody else to beat us, as Zhang and Heck have another golf commitment and won't be there.

RE: Women's Golf hosts "The Condi" - BostonCard - 10-19-2021

This is why if we fall short in match play I will be soooo frustrated.  I think this team is far and away the best in the country, and I think that barring injuries, we would have to be the overwhelming favorites in the stroke play portion of the tournament.  And yet, I would probably say that due to the vagueries of match play, we are probably less than 50/50 to win the tourney.

RE: Women's Golf hosts "The Condi" - Spiny_Norman - 10-19-2021

In the latest Golfweek poll, Stanford's women's golf team has moved up to #1.

Stanford has 6 players ranked in the top 50:
2. Rose Zhang
12. Aline Krauter
17. Caroline Sturdza
26. Brooke Seay
41. Rachel Heck
44. Angelina Ye

Notes:
#1 is Brooke Matthews from Arkansas who is playing in the LPGA Q School this week and may end up turning pro.

Seay has only competed in one event so far. She missed the first two events before playing on the B team at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Heck and Ye missed the first tournament of the fall. Heck was recovering from a non-Covid illness. Ye was competing in a national tournament in China.

Seay was on the roster for The Molly at Bayonet but was withdrawn during the first round. No info on why but you can guess.

She and Sturdza will be competing for the #5 slot. Engelmann may also be in contention there
