Stanford in the NFL - Austroturf - 10-24-2021

Zach Ertz scores his first TD for the Arizona Cardinals, while Davis Mills is running for his life behind an overmatched offensive line.  Cardinals lead the Texans 24-5; and two of Houston's five points were scored by the defense.  The Texans have 114 yards of offense in 3 quarters.

I just hope Mills doesn't get hurt. The Texans are a horrid team and no matter how well Mills plays it won't matter.

Yes, that was my assessment, too.  Most of his passes were check-downs because he never had time to set-up and hit a receiver downfield.  Also, the running game consistently failed because the Houston O-line could not open up any lanes.

Yes, that would fit Houston's MO. Get the number 1 pick, draft a "great" QB, still have no OL and no running game, and still suck. Mills isn't their problem, but with some luck he will show enough that he can go elsewhere.

i'd normally agree but the draft board may save Houston from itself as the '22 board is pretty sparse on top QB talent, or at least not one QB that screams #1 talent.

If the Niners drafted Mac Jones, he’d be starting.  And they’d be better with him than Garrapolo (who let’s face it, isn’t very good). No question Jones is more NFL ready today - maybe then any of the first round picks.  Lance probably will be better long term. But will he be two years worth of first round picks better?  That is the question.  Especially given Niners will probably finish around 7-10.

Who are the NFC teams vying for the wild card spots (assume Arizona or LAR get one of them)?  Vikings?  New Orleans?  Who else?  That's where the 'Niners' hopes lie.  And we're not even at the halfway point yet.

I'm naturally a pessimist on my rooting interests, but I think things could set up nicely for a WC run and the team having some momentum heading into the playoffs.  It starts with naming Lance the starter and getting him comfortable. Jimmy can and still will be useful as Lance will definitely get dinged again with the way he plays, and Jimmy will have to come in and win a game or two (which he can do).  Also, Shanahan has to avoid the brain lock game management decisions - haven't had too many instances for that this season, but we might see some down the road, especially if things turn around a bit.

I wouldn't quite give up on the 'Niners just yet, and I say that fully expecting a tough division schedule.  We shall see.

Well, as to wildcards first the ship has to be righted. What do you have:
- One viable outside receiver who is best at intermediate routes and reverses.
- An All Pro TE who can’t stay on the field.
- A RT who can’t protect his grandmother.
- An All Pro MLB who is making some bad reads.
- Older CB’s who grab and groan.
- A defense that is light on takeaways.
- A head coach who has too much on his plate (just like the college guy up the street)
- No #1’s for two more years.
- Your two best RB’s on IR with your best never being able to play a full year.
- An owner who is trust fund baby who never had to think for himself.
