Another reason to loathe USC - OutsiderFan - 10-26-2021

One of the many things that makes USC so loathsome is its air of superiority or maybe just entitlement.  

Yesterday - the only USC QB who has ever amounted to anything in the NFL, despite so much praise being heaped on them all in college - Carson Palmer, said he's involved in the USC head coach search and told Dan Patrick Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin was a candidate.

I immediately thought it to be absurd. Today, Tomlin called it a joke and actually seemed offended that other NFL coaches like Sean Payton and Andy Reid aren't asked about being a college coach. Here's the clip:

Putting it all together, the reason Palmer mentioned Tomlin is because it makes the USC job - that apparently few of their top candidates want - more attractive. "Oh, they must be big time if the likes of Mike Tomlin are interested."  Bleh. Nothing is more phony than all things USC. I just hope this little ploy to make themselves seem like the biggest deal in college football - when they aren't - comes off as the joke it is, for the same reasons, to people beyond myself.

I’d say “seemed offended” is a bit mild.  Royally pissed sums it up nicely…..

I wonder if a second reason he resented being inserted into the conversation is that he may have viewed it as USC trying to diversity-wash its search, or that he resents any insinuation that he doesn't belong as an NFL head coach.  Hence the reference to two white NFL head coaches (Payton and Reid).

For the record:
Aside from Andy Reid's tenure being much longer than the other two, they have remarkably similar track records.

Even by NFL coach standards, Tomlin has always acted weird when taking questions from the press. Oddly emotive. A little Ditka-esque.

I get it. Tomlin is one of the most successful NFL coaches in today's NFL. I don't see a lot of attention in the press for that success. I'm sure he felt that these questions wouldn't have come up if he was white. And he's likely correct. Whatever Palmer's agenda, it sounds like he made this up with a total absence of substance.

Either that or somebody else made it up and told Palmer. Palmer was so U$C that he didn't even think it unusual and repeated it. Not sure he has the imagination to make it up himself.

Isn't the more simple answer they wanted a good NFL coach to coach at SC? 
If it were a race-based trial balloon, why not David Shaw?  Or Franklin? 

I completely embrace the notion that SC is delusional in thinking that its job is The Plum job in the football coaching world.  But I'm much more hesitant to assume that Tomlin was leaked for "racial appearance" purposes.  Tomlin should be mildly flattered and not pissed.  At least from this angle.  But I still kinda liked his presser!

I think Franklin *was* mentioned.

The corrosive effect of racism (and other forms of discrimination) is not that they always happen, but that victims of prejudice are always left to wonder whether something that happened (like being a successful head coach being asked if they were interested in a second rate college program) was ordinary douchebaggery or “racially tinged” douchebaggery.  Not knowing Palmer, I have no idea if he was thinking “who is the biggest name head coach in the NFL not named Bill Belichek” and settled on Tomlin, or if he was thinking “who is the biggest name *Black* head coach in the NFL.”  Tomlin probably doesn’t know either, but having been underestimated and underrecognized one too many times because he was Black, I have to wonder if that was a factor.

Of course, I just may be imagining things, and Tomlin may well have no patience for douchebaggery, racially tinged or not.  In fact, Tomlin doesn’t strike me as someone with patience for that kind of crap, regardless.

Who really gives a schit about this. Carson Palmer was a choke artist in the pros. Tomlin has tenure at the most secure franchise in the history of the NFL. He has great stature in the game. He didn’t have to respond to show contempt. Stay above the horseshit.

I think BC is on the right track with this one.

Whether true or not, it seems Tomlin's anger was predicated from his perception that he was singled out for being black, because no white coach with similar success has publicly had their name linked to college coaching jobs. And I do think his "a booster can't write a big enough check" comment betrayed a "I'm not going to be bought to satisfy the egos of rich white guys" air to it. Even putting aside the fact Tomlin is black, it is just obscenely disrespectful to suggest a guy at the top of his profession, which as he said, is one of the best coaching jobs in professional sports, would go be a college coach and beg for commitments from 17 and 18 year olds. Please. 

As an aside, I have massive respect for Mike Tomlin as a Head Coach and leader. His record speaks for itself, but he really further impressed me with some comments he made about media a few weeks ago.  Basically he allowed an opponent's beat reporters to ask him questions when he didn't have to, because he said he respects the job the media has, as a conduit between the team and fans, and he wants Steelers media to be treated well by opposing teams. Basically, an NFL Head Coach came out in support of people doing a job that involves criticizing him. Just have mad respect for that guy as a coach and leader.

then I read the above post about what Palmer actually said and am wondering why is anybody (including me) wasting any thought on this statement/supposed slight?  Apologies.

Who cares about coach search puffery? Pretty sure a lot of ridiculous, unrealistic names have been bandied about for the majority of head coach searches, including our own.

Always wondered that.  After Palmer, Rodney Peete is arguably the most successful USC quarterback in the NFL.  They've had 21 quarterbacks drafted, Carson started for 12 years, Peete for 7, none other for more than six.  Notable first or second round flameouts include Marinovich, Beathard, Darnold, Sanchez, Bukich and Leinart.

Stanford's 23 NFL-drafted QBs include multiple Super Bowl winners (Elway, Plunkett), NFL MVPs (Brodie), All-Pros (Albert, Luck, Boryla), other starters and long term backup (Dils)

I'd give Darnold a couple more years before I'd call him a flameout.

Rudy Bukich had a gun. However he also had Van Brocklin (HOF) ahead of him in LA, LeBaron entrenched in the only year Rudy was in Washington, Bobby Layne (HOF) in Pittsburgh and Billy Wade (NFL '63 champs) in Chicago. Never had a real chance to be The Guy.

Elway was an NFL MVP (in 1987) a SuperBowl MVP, a three-time second team all-Pro, and a nine-time Pro Bowler.  Also, Walter Payton Man of the Year, and part of the 1990's all-Decade team and 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.  He is enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame.  I think labeling him as a Super Bowl winner kind of under-sells it, doesn't it?
