In 1926 we went undefeated and tied Alabama (!) in the 1927 Rose Bowl. We were undefeated and rated #2 in 1940. #4 in 2010 and #3 in 2015. We probably have the most H award runner-ups in at least the last 20 years.
Conventional cards seem to be stacked against us. Well, what if we decided to go rogue and exit the Pac 12? What if we decided to schedule teams from schools that are “intellectual” and/or regional equals? For example: USC (natch), Notre Dame, Kal, San Jose State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Duke, Vanderbilt, BYU, Harvard or Yale. How about a game with the Toledo Rockets? Perhaps fans would be intrigued. Obviously, we'd have to relinquish our Rose Bowl ambitions.
I’m not privy to all the financial/contractual nuances of our involvement with the Pac 12. I just think this might be an alternate reality that should be explored.

Probably lose to SC, Domers, SJS, Fresno, SDS, Wake, BYU and fall asleep against Harvard. Perhaps play Point Loma, Occidental, Immaculate Heart, Reed College and Deep Springs.

You forgot William and Mary. We were actually supposed to play them last year.

Mary died. William was Dutch and he could care less about running Power, the quick kick and nine overtime games.

Don't forget to schedule Hawaii...for recruiting purposes.

I think more likely is the creation of a small number of superconferences that break away from the NCAA. I'm guessing Stanford would be a part of that, but maybe not in which case SJSU, Fresno State, etc. would be likely opponents--if Stanford doesn't drop football altogether.

Here's the number of runners-up by college. Turns out you're correct (this is since the inception of the award, not the last 20 years):
6 Stanford
5 Oklahoma
4 Iowa, Notre Dame, Southern California, Tennessee
3 Army, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue,
2 Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas, Tulsa
1 BYU, California, Clemson, Colorado, Columbia, Cornell, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas State, LSU, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Pennsylvania, San Diego State, SMU, Syracuse, TCU, Temple, Texas A&M, Wisconsin

Other distinctions likely never to be matched are having the runner up 3 years in a row, and the same player as runner up twice.

Bryce Love. And I counted Luck twice. And Albert finished third in 1941.

McColl was fourth in '51.
Dick Norman? LOL. 34/39 for 401 IN 1959! And they lose to Cal. Cactus Jack tries to rush Skip Face into the game to tie the score (FG) as time expires.

Oklahoma actually is tied with Stanford, they also has six runner-up finishes, by six different players:
Kurt Burris, Greg Pruitt, Billy Sims. Josh Heupel, Adrian Peterson, Jalen Hurts.
They also have seven winners.
