Women’s Soccer - Griffins78 - 10-28-2021

Anyone watching? On the Pac12 network

RE: Women’s Soccer at UCLA 7pm - BobK - 10-28-2021

Nerve racking

I can't stand the fake injuries in soccer.   They should have video review and issue yellow cards to the fakers.

RE: Women’s Soccer at UCLA 7pm - BobK - 10-28-2021

I can’t stand ucla goals with 4 minutes left. 1-0 ucla

RE: Women’s Soccer at UCLA 7pm - martyup - 10-28-2021

Dammit!

It will be a tough pill to swallow

It  does seem there's a lot of dramatic acting in soccer (it looked more obvious in tonight's men's game).  But I never played soccer and maybe what seems like acting is real.  In tonight's WSOC game, I went back to review one of UCLA's players grabbing the back of her right thigh.  Turns out she did catch a Stanford knee a second or two before she went down.

Video review would be a disaster unless the game went on with the results of the review announced at the next stoppage.

Maybe an alternative to video review is to just require those who don't/can't get up right away to be removed from the game for, say, 2 minutes of game time (with a substitute).   But that might encourage more rough play, trying to get the other team's best players out of the game.  And it might encourage a truly injured player trying to tough it when they should stay down.

Another alternative would be reviews after the game, with a player found as faking an injury to be held out of their next game.

Frustrating losses tonight despite relatively even play (I only saw most of the last half of the men's game).

Tough day for soccer all around.  Men fell 1-0 too.

Stanford women had a 2 goal lead against SC and gave it up.  Now tied 2-2 at 74 minutes.

RE: Women’s Soccer - BobK - 10-31-2021

Overtime now

Easier goal ever for the usc win

RE: Women’s Soccer - martyup - 10-31-2021

We just gave up a winning goal in OT.

ca245 - ca245 - 10-31-2021

Ugh. Pending the results of MSoc against UW and WVb against ASU, there is a real chance that Fb, WSoc, WVb, and MSoc could go a collective 0-7 this week. Let’s hope we pull out at least one of the two remaining games to avoid this fate.

Yes, this Halloween week was a nightmare for Stanford sports.

Stanford plays Santa Clara in first round. UCLA is #2 in the same bracket

RE: Women’s Soccer - Spiny_Norman - 11-08-2021

Full bracket here - https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/soccer-women/d1/2021

Stanford will host vs. Santa Clara, date and time tbd. The winner will presumably face Georgetown, seeded 3rd in this quarter of the bracket.

P12 teams in the tourney besides Stanford:
UCLA - #2 seed in the same quarter as Stanford (Duke #1)
USC - #3 seed in the Virginia bracket
Washington State - unseeded in the Florida State bracket

ACC pulls down 3 #1 seeds and a #2. Rutgers is the 4th top seed.

To add insult to injury, we play AT Santa Clara.

more than a little annoying, since we beat them 3-1 in September without current starting forwards Abby Greubel and Madison Haley who were out with injury. I was expecting to host the first round--we are a clear 4th in the Pac-12 and I think among the top 32 teams in the country.

In common opponents, Santa Clara tied Cal while we beat them 3-1, we both lost to UCLA by a goal, we beat San Francisco but Santa Clara lost to them, we beat Loyola Marymount 3-0 while Santa Clara beat them 6-0. Santa Clara also lost to 1-seed Virginia, and Portland, and tied Seattle. We play in a much tougher conference: only one other WCC team made the tournament (BYU, which Santa Clara beat), while 3 other Pac-12 teams did (and we beat one of them). It's admittedly close (their best win was over a 4-seed, BYU, while ours was against unseeded WSU) but I would call our records fairly similar, except for that solid head-to-head win over them.

If we win, we play at 3-seed Georgetown, and if successful then probably at 2-seed UCLA again, followed probably at regional 1-seed Duke. That's a tough road, although our games against UCLA and Duke this year were close.

We beat them head to head and were one spot ahead of them on the RPI. I have no idea how they got to host unless we didn't put in a bid.

If we win Saturday, second and third round is hosted by #2 UCLA, we don't have to go to Georgetown.
