After watching the Washington at Stanford football game this morning...
Ordinarily, I would be furious, ranting and raving about all the things that led to losing, pointing out patterns of repeated failure, and trying to suggest things that can be done to improve.
Not anymore. My first impulse was to catalog all the problems I see after viewing the game, but after thinking more about it, if the school and those overseeing the program don't care, why should fans? So I am forcing myself to not criticize anything, and have instead chosen to stop caring.
I guess the tens of thousands staying away from the games are on to something. From what I saw on TV, I guessed there was maybe 5,000 people there. Perception is reality.

Sadly, the lack of attendance is a big factor in why this is the low point of the Shaw era.
I fully believe the team can get to five wins, and maybe that is enough to hold on to the recruiting class and hope for ‘22.
But it is going to take something mighty to reverse the apathy.

Two games in a row. I see a team that needs to score and Shaw sees a team that needs to run out the clock. Sad commentary on state of affairs

I have been a season ticket holder for four decades. Seriously considered not renewing this year, will not do so next year. 7:30 kickoffs, Friday night games, and lousy football just ain’t worth it.

I went to bed with 12 to go in 4th. It was one of the most boring football games I’ve ever seen. The “crowd” didn’t help. But these 7:30 games are absurd. Also, Officials did a nice job grinding a game that had no rhythm into the ground.

I guess I'm not there yet. I went on a long walk after the game and still headed to bed plenty mad after that.

I think the sad commentary on the state of affairs was that they couldn't run out the clock. If you are moving the ball down the field to score and the clock happens to run out with you ahead, that's fine. However, in years past, there was little question we could get two first downs on the ground 90% of the time. Now, we can't, and THAT is the problem IMHO.

I am also not quite yet there, but my experience was slightly different from yours. These Pac-12 after dark games always take place during my night. But curiosity got the better of me at around 06:30 AM Central European Time, so I got up to see that Stanford had a 13-12 lead and the ball with 3 minutes and change remaining. No returning to bed. I found a stream and watched us totally falter down the stretch. My frustration and anger meant I was up for good at that point on a Sunday morning. You went to bed mad; I got up mad. I have told myself I shouldn't care; but obviously I do, and that makes me even angrier.

The only thing I’d say to moderate this critique is that we are in a COVID recovery year, and the usual cultivation of students, fans, band members, etc just hasn’t been normal… for a while. But plans need to be made to rebuild across all of those groups, and nothing helps more than winning. We are at risk of becoming tolerant of a new low, and what recruit wants to come to a school with a half-empty student section, a band that needs a PA to be heard, and upper deck sections with only one person sitting in them… this year I’ll grant a mulligan. Next year must improve.

Hate to break it to you, but THIS is the good schedule/odd year. Next year will be horrific in terms of bodies inside the stadium. I know it's hard to fathom the notion of it getting worse, but it can get worse. I think this Friday night will give you a good picture of what all of next season will look like (win or lose).

Next year they don’t play UA and Colorado again, bottom feeders with Stanford and Cal. So that’s two losses almost guaranteed to Utah and ASU, teams with far better athletes. At Oregon, UCLA, Domers, three teams with far better athletes. That’s five probable defeats right there.
I gave up on tickets after 65 years of attending albeit with decades of comps and seven years of making films for the AD. I will give up watching them on TV if they play another season of boring football in 2022. Cactus Jack usually lost but the team was never boring. Chuck Taylor’s teams (except for UCLA scoring 72 in ‘54) gave value for the buck. Stanford 2021 is sleep inducing. MSU/Michigan was electrifying and I didn’t have to spend a dime watching it.

as a couple of long-time Stanford football supporters points out, Shaw delivers "joyless football" even with wins. as primary playcaller, Shaw delivers under 300 yards total offense 1 of 4 games despite having top 25 offensive talent advantages (or at least according to the recruiting services).
top 10 paid head coach
top 25 talent (per recruiting services)
3 successive teams ranked in the mid-60s (per Sagarin)
an offense now ranked #107 in total offense (great playcaller)
and an overall program decline (see previous figures below)
change is needed
"2011-2014: 77.6%
2012-2015: 77.9%
2013-2016: 75.7%
2014-2017: 72.1%
2015-2018: 74.0%
2016-2019: 60.9%
2017-2020: 58.4%
2018-2021: 51.7%

Except for Women’s hoops, men’s gym, women’s golf and baseball Stanford’s overall program is on the skids. Heavens to Pop Warner didn’t they lose the Ted Cup? And if they can’t stop Garbers’ QB keepers they probably can’t keep the Axe.
You guys can send a 10cent check to The Conference of Chiefs’ along with a note that you won’t contribute until Shaw fires Pritchard and Anderson and promises not to call the plays. Or you can keep donating to the Buck Club regardless of the dull, boring, unorganized and losing football team.

I would add womens' tennis and softball to the good side of the ledger.

Thanks, Marty. I mean, you go one measly season without winning a national championship, and all of a sudden you're on the skids! ;-)
(But yes to the general tenor of the thread. I used to obsessively follow the football team's recruiting and I lived and died with every down, and now I just--don't much care. Multiple punts inside the opponent's 40 will break a man like that.)

home games in 2022
03 Sept - Colgate
TBD - USC (I'd guess 10 Sept given that USC plays Fresno State on 17 Sept)
TBD - ASU
TBD - OSU
TBD - WSU
26 Nov - BYU

I stopped donating to B/C after the varsity sports fiasco. I told Howard Wolff that I wouldn't even consider donating again until Muir was gone. He is incapable of repairing the damage to the donor base (among other issues). Instead, I give money directly to the golf programs. My relatively small contributions are actually appreciated by the coaches and the players - Most of the players know who I am, and when I see them on the course they always say hi & thank me.
We've lived through worse than the last three years and not dumped our tickets. I don't plan to get rid of them after this season, even if we go 3-9.

Roughly the same for me. After decades of rabid fandom, my interest started waning in earnest just before the pandemic, which ended up distancing me more from the game and program. My tailgate group has been decimated by a number of factors, most of them listed in this thread. I dread the impending conference realignment, and I too miss the days of season tickets arriving in the mail, each game with a set kickoff time (usually 12:30 or thereabouts) printed on the ticket.
For me it's also become more existential; for a myriad of reasons, some related to this thread, others not, a growing part of me hopes Stanford will be among the first P5 universities to shutter its football program. That would admittedly be bittersweet for me, but I'm convinced with each day that it would be the right thing to do.
Somewhat hypocritically (though not entirely), I've shifted my Stanford fandom to the hoops program. Not in a walk in the park by any stretch, given the up-and-(mainly)down state of the program at a time when transfers are so pivotal, but the scheduling is more consistent, the vibe more fun/pleasant, and the injuries less traumatic (and life-impacting).

I didn't think you could donate to specific sports anymore. Football used to have Starting Eleven and MBB and WBB had their own programs where fans could donate to those specific programs (and receive some benefits). But that was done away with, I thought, under Bowlsby regime. Did it resurface? Do you donate and then put a notation on the on-line form or check? I'm curious how the mechanics of that works.
