OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - TrumpCard - 10-31-2021

I don't know how many Shaw supporters besides me remain, but if Shaw is out, then maybe TCU and Stanford should swap and give two good coaches a chance for a fresh start.

just saw this at ESPN.
have schools swapped coaches before?  it's an interesting concept.

RE: OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - OutsiderFan - 11-01-2021

Since Shaw is an Albatross around Stanford's football program neck right now, the correct move would be David Shaw doing what he should have done years ago - fire Lance Anderson - to replace him with Gary Patterson.

I'm not saying Patterson would take the job, but Shaw needs to replace both his O & D Coordinators, and Patterson is now available. He will be in high demand to be a DC if he wants to continue coaching.

RE: OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - Phogge - 11-01-2021

David Shaw has the appearance of someone who won’t be corrected. I think he is de facto Muir’s superior. Nobody tells David Shaw what to do.

However OF, a great idea.

Wasn’t there a baseball trade of managers, Bob Swift for Charlie Dressen?

Patterson is 61 years old and has been a head coach for his last 20.  I highly doubt he would want to be a coordinator, and he may be done with coaching altogether.  I see him taking up a cushy spot in the broadcast booth.

I also don't think Patterson would be interested in a DC job.

Interesting to note that Patterson's last truly good season was the 2017 campaign (11-3) when the Horned Frogs came back and beat us in the Alamo Bowl and were ranked 9th in the final AP poll.  That Alamo Bowl loss still hurts.  Since then, TCU has finished 7-6 (2018), 5-7 (2019), 6-4 (2020) and 3-5 (2021) for a 21-22 record during the last four years.  Stanford is 20-19 during this same period.

I think if Patterson took a look at Stanford's defensive personnel, he would politely say, "No Thanks". I know I would. College football is 80% talent, especially on the defensive side. I see a number of relatively slow, physically weak, non-explosive defenders out there for Stanford.

The cupboard has to be reloaded.

RE: OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - Goose - 11-01-2021

There had been discussion that Patterson was considering retirement before the start of the season. Him getting dismissed quite probably was somewhat mutual consent. The school may have felt he wasn't totally committed to the program and may/probably would leave at the end of the season anyway. TCU wanted certainty on next year, one way or another. They got it. I don't see Patterson jumping right in to any other coaching job right away.

RE: OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - Phogge - 11-01-2021

Bill Swift replaced Chuck Dressen at Detroit when Dressen died of a heart attack

Hall of Famer Joe Gorden, manager of the Indians, was traded for Tigers manager Jimmy Dykes in the middle of the 1960 season. I would trade Shaw to Sac State for Troy Taylor and all his offensive assistants. He could live with Brian Treggs at Treggs' home in Palo Alto.

RE: OT: Gary Patterson out at TCU - needle - 11-01-2021

Quote:According to sources, on Sunday Patterson met with senior level administrators at TCU.

If Patterson had any chance of remaining at TCU in 2022 as the head football coach, he was going to have to make some concessions, and changes.

That would have included replacing Patterson’s longtime friend, offensive assistant Jerry Kill, as well as offensive coordinator Doug Meacham.

Those are the changes that would matter.

When that “suggestion” went south, Patterson was also encouraged to coach through the end of the season with the “offer” that he would move into a senior level administrative role in 2022.

Wow .... Lots of speculation that TCU is going after Sonny Dykes to replace Patterson.

Yeah, THAT Sonny Dykes.

Sony is 7-1 at SMU with a very entertaining team (they don't punt inside the 40). They could be unbeaten except they forgot how to squib kick at the end of the Houston game Saturday.
