UW shows it cares -

A day after UW fell to Oregon, with an offensive performance that looked like Stanford, a week after beating Stanford, and having a better record than Stanford, without a 52-7 humiliation on its resume....

I'm not saying firing coaches is a panacea. But firing coaches shows a program actually cares about winning, which is important.

Quote: Meanwhile, the UW athletic department’s investigation into an incident involving Lake and walk-on linebacker Ruperake Fuavai remains ongoing. Lake was shown on national television separating Fuavai from a sideline scrum by hitting him in the facemask, then shoving him in the back as he walked away.
UW and Lake have bigger issues than their offensive coordinator.

Not as big as Stanford's, in part because it was willing to fire a coach for lack of performance.

Did you even read the quote? Their head coach assaulted a player on national TV, but sure, a willingness to fire a coordinator will fix that.

Gotta disagree. Lake is in very deep water (pardon the pun). His comment last week about Oregon’s academics, his out of control behavior on the sidelines, his record as a head coach. Wow. Lake is desperately trying to salvage his job at this point. He is a classic case of a good coordinator who is an awful head coach.

Lake is a joke. UW is the most disappointing team in the conference (and the conference has a lot of teams going through disappointing seasons right now).

I saw the incident on TV. UW had been penalized for unsportsmanship twice over a short period of time. There was a tackle of a OR player on the UW sideline and a UW player was taunting the Duck. The coach stepped in between the two and pushed his player back toward the benches to avoid another costly penalty. I would not characterize this as an assault.

I agree with Martyup on this one (a sign of the Apocalypse? No, that would be Lex and I agreeing on the caliber of coach David Shaw is/is not).

Totally agree Marty, neither would I. Pretty strong word there. Lake is clearly struggling as the head coach but this is a non-incident IMO.

I loved it when Tedford used to grab players face masks. At Cal he came close to a Harbaugh turnaround but his nut case NFL POY QB wasn’t quite good enough. College football has become patty cake.
I love the mustache strength guy at Oregon. He’s over the top but at least he isn’t like the Walking Dead Stanford staff.

Seems a bit more than just grabbing a guy by the mouth guard, and of course the shove in the back as the player was walking away seemed superfluous. I get that Lake was pissed; he had good reason to be. But it also meets the definition of assault (technically, I guess, battery). Is it a firing offense in and of itself? Probably not, but it’s the sort of thing that if you are already on the hot seat is not going to help you retain your job. It is not, as they say, “a good look”

Are we really this soft?
Lake pushed a Pac-12 lineman in football pads and a helmet to make a point that needed to be made, during a football game that is all about collisions. If there wasn't such thing as social media, nobody would know or care about this incident, which means it's pretty benign. And I guarantee if the Huskies beat Oregon, not a single person in the UW fan base would be squawking about it.
Anyway, the point of the thread is UW showed football matters by cashiering a coach for producing an unacceptable performance. It may not lead to immediate better performance, but it will allow the program to claim winning is important to anyone considering becoming a part of it as a player, coach, or fan, and have credibility. That's more than Stanford or Cal can credibly claim right now, and they are competing for a lot of the same people, be it players or coaches. Talented people want to go where they can win with other talented people. This shouldn't be a foreign concept to Stanford.
I mean imagine if Stanford had teachers producing student academic performance like the Stanford Football team. How could it possibly not start losing out on talented students and faculty as trash performance is accepted, and see its reputation fall as a result?

Why do we have to keep calling them "Student-athletes"?
How about something novel? How about football players, how about gymnasts, how about rowers?
Or just call them "Students."
And OF, we are too soft. Oh gee, maybe the poor "Student athlete" had his feelings hurt. Maybe he was "body shamed" or made to feel that he was a dumbass in front of his "Peers." Maybe Lake should have taken him by the hand and whispered in his ear and then written him a Hallmark card with butterflies and unicorns on the front.
I can imagine the poor student-athlete writing home (sorry, nobody writes anymore, so let's say he texts) and dripping tears (how do you do that in a text?) on the paper.
I think about Mutt Mantle driving to his son's minor league hotel room and packing his cardboard suitcase and Mickey saying, "What are you doing?" Mutt: "I thought I raised a man."

Given that one of our guys injured himself walking through the tunnel on the way out of the game, had it been Stanford, that shove would have been really dangerous.

Oregon State, this week's opponent, fired its defensive coordinator over the weekend.

Looks like it is going to be another the resistible force (our offense) against the moveable object (the OSU defense) game.
We better find a way to put some serious points on the board because I highly doubt our defense is going to be able to stop their offense.

But the "assault" DID NOT HAPPEN on a CONCRETE FLOOR, did it. And the "victim", in full pads, was a head taller than the righteously (and rightfully) exasperated "perpetrator" trying to bring something forcefully to said victim's knuckle-headed attention. We have slowly and steadily become a culture of preening, posturing snowflakes, Karens and Brandons. But, I say to myself, what a wonderful world...

I gues you are not familiar with a thing called tenure? I don't know how it is today, but when I was at Stanford I had some great faculty members as teachers and I had some faculty members that were horrible ones who made no bones about the fact they didn't care if we learned anything or not. Nobody was going to get fired. Simply a very bad analogy.
Actually, I think firing an assistant because his squad plays badly and making a public spectacle of it sends the message that "This program is in disarray and they are looking for scapegoats". It doesn't send the message this is a place that expects to win and will do what it takes to win. It sends the message this is a place that doesn't know how to win and is flailing about trying to find a way to win.

Quote:The Beavers are allowing 21.3 points per game and 5.14 yards per play at home. On the road, they’re yielding 32.8 points per game and 6.24 yards per play. They say defense travels, but OSU’s unit hasn’t left Corvallis since September.

That's what I thought when our #12 ranked rushing offense faced the #11 ranked rushing defense (UW). We all know how that turned out for our rushing offense.
