Why The Play persists - gailtate - 11-19-2021

I can't watch it. It's the visual equivalent of a dumb-ass joke you've heard repeatedly, retold by idiots who don't know a punchline from a punch bowl. It took on a life of its own a long time ago. And face it: its bizarre and unusual nature guaranteed a man-bites-dog appeal to the masses. So it's irresistible to the hoi-polloi and the pandering sports-media. And then there is the local angle. The Bay Area and Cal alums: This one, brief, shining moment is the only thing the weenies really own in football lore and fame. The only thing they have. This is what gives it eternal, zombie life. Nothing else matters in WeenieWorld for the simple reason that they don't have anything else. Rose Bowls? Championships? Trophy talk? They got nuthin', man. NUTHIN' except this two-headed calf. The Play belongs in the biology department basement with the all the other believe-or-not oddities. My contempt for weenies hits the heights this week. It finally hit me today. So you lose tomorrow, so what? You will still be who YOU are, and they will still be weenies. Pleasuring themselves with Their Play.

Exactly.  Remember when they gave out bobbleheads for it at Big Game a few years back?  It was them admitting they had no other accomplishments worth mentioning at any time in the preceding 30+ years.

I got one of those bobbleheads and proudly gave mine to a child of a Bear alum that I was coaching in youth soccer.   I told the child that this was given out at Cal to celebrate the most significant accomplishment in Cal football in the last 40 years.  

The kid looked at this odd bobble head thing and thought I was joking, but his Dad had to confirm that my gift was legit and from Cal.

FWIW - I know, I just know, Stanford Stadium will have a replay of the blocked try at the end of last year's game.    I hate that we have this nostalgia thing as a promotion in Stanford Stadium, and can only hope that Cal won't have a big lead by the time that promo is revealed.

Consider yourselves lucky that you didn't witness three consecutive trips to Pasadena by Cal and even a 1951 B.G. upset win over Rose Bowl bound Stanford. I believe Paddy Waldorf's squads prevailed in eight out of nine Big Games and the other was a tie.

People who hear Starkey's call now have the benefit of having it accompanied by video, but if you were listening to the radio broadcast you would have had no idea what had happened other than that THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD and THE BEARS HAVE WON, THE BEARS HAVE WON! No mentions of laterals, tosses, keeping the play alive, however you want to describe it. The closest thing he comes to mentioning a lateral is when he mentions "another one" without specifying what "one" is. Even if you want to be generous and give him an allowance for getting caught up in the absurdity and emotion of The Play as it happened in real life, at some point he needed to collect himself and give the listener a better idea of what happened. In contrast, Bill King's Holy Roller call was the perfect way to call an absurd play over the radio.

Comparing Starkey to King is akin to comparing Charles Shaw to Stag’s Leap.
