Anybody in there? Guess the “crowd.”
Williams is horrible. Can’t cover, can’t tackle. Last line of defense is Swiss cheese.

It’s actually decent. At least 40,000.

Somewhere in the 30-40K range

And someone needs to get Steve Frost a Riccola.

Optimistically the stadium was half full when I got in mid way thru first quarter. I left at halftime to tailgate and people were streaming out as we headed home in the third quarter. I can't blame them.

I was there, thought it was about 33-34K. Much harder to get in the stadium than for any other game for some reason, so the crowd was still arriving in the second quarte3r.

I think it might have been a bit more, maybe 35, 36K. It was a late arriving crowd and the upper deck filled up in a pretty irregular fashion. The student section was surprisingly (to me) full. It for sure wasn't 40K.

More than 7200 students, the most at a Big Game in 20 years.
Total reported attendance 49,265. I talked to a number of STM who made use of the "free" tickets.

Maybe they distributed 49K tickets. Looked like 25K actually in the Stadium.

It was definitely more than 25K when you consider the number of students on both sides in the stands. Our section in 134 looked more crowded than the sections across the field on the "shady" side.

Not sure what to make of the fact that the shady side center sections never filled in. Fan protest? It was a 4 PM rivalry game, nice weather… not sure why so many would skip it. Just seems a bit off if you’re going to spend $1-2k/seat or whatever the donation is these days and then not show up for Big Game.

Alot of those folks are older and perhaps not comfy yet with covid potential. I know 4 who haven't attended any games. There seats go unused.

Attendance was actually much better than I expected. No way was it 49K. Capacity is listed at 50,424. There were virtually no sections I saw in the upper deck that were "full". At the start of the game the row I sit in had a total of four occupants, me and three Cal fans. A few people arrived a bit later (season ticket holders who hadn't shown up for any games before) but there were plenty of empty seats in section 232. It was much better attended than Utah or even Oregon, but it wasn't 49K.

In the dim, distant recesses of my memory, I seem to recall that when the new stadium was being built, there would be the capability to add 12,000 to 15,000 additional temporary seats for potential overflow games like Cal, SC, UDFG, etc. I realize that it might seem a bit far off, but I'm confident that Stanford football will rebound, and while the 85k crowds are a distant memory, do we actually have the capacity to have 62k to 65k?

I also remember some talk about having the option to add capacity. I think it involved temporary bleachers behind the top rows of the end zone sections. But I seem to remember that this feature was dropped somewhere along the way.

To anyone's knowledge has Stanford conducted a study/survey to find out why attendance has dwindled so much (even when we were winning)?

Adding more seats would hurt the pricing leverage on the 50,000 seats. Remember a few years ago when USC fans would buy Stanford season tickets just to get tickets to the USC game.
