WVB at Berkeley (3-0 win) - Softball Fan - 11-27-2021
The women's volleyball team plays Cal at 8:00 tonight. It's televised on PAC-12 Bay Area.
Cal is 0-19 in conference. I expect the number of Cal's conference wins to stay the same after playing Stanford.
Prediction: Stanford wins in a sweep.
This is the final regular season game. The NCAA tournament selection is tomorrow at 5:30 pm on ESPNU. If it is like many years the first half of the show will not be shown because some sporting event goes longer than expected.

I agree with Stanford winning with a sweep of Cal in its regular season finale.
Fun guessing game:

Will Stanford be bracketed with a Regional 1-seed, 2-seed, 3-seed or 4-seed in the forthcoming NCAA Tournament?

I think he means we will be put in with a 3 seed, making us the equivalent of a 6 seed (or 21-24 overall) not that we would be the #3 in a region. I think with our finish, and giving some allowance for the fact that most of our losses were short handed following injuries to Oglive and later Miner, that the committee might put us in with a 4 seed, putting us in the 17-20 range. I guess we will see.
One thing is for sure, I wouldn’t want to be in our region.

Absolutely. Stanford is a wild card this season. Capable of beating any team. Capable of losing to any team.

We wiped the floor with them in the first set. 25-12. We are winning the second 20-11, so barring a dramatic change, should be our most dominant win of the season, against a very overmatched opponent.

25-16 in the second set.

That’s a wrap. 25-12, 25-16, 25-17.
Stanford hit .418, the weenies .189.

Cal needs to recruit better players. Period. Full stop.

Cal class for 2022 ranked about 59, 95 and over 100. Yes they really need better recruiting
So do we have a shot now at hosting ?
Did Annabelle lose her redshirt ? Or like FB can play some but not lose the year. Btw she played well

I think she might have. I know there is a rule about playing fewer than 30% of the regular season matches, which she clearly meets. But I thought there was also a rule about not playing in the second half of the season...? Maybe I'm wrong about that.
She still get a fifth year because of Covid, right?
Just looked at her bio, had not noticed this before:
"Dual citizen (United State and Czech Republic), speaks Czech fluently"
I think the odds of Stanford hosting are about 2%.
I didn't even get an email about tickets for potential home matches. (Though maybe that's because I'm automatically in?)

Cal's best all-around player by far, Mimi Mirkovic, is graduating this year. She was senior ace #72. Mirkovic's first choice was Stanford until she was told her role for the Cardinal would be DS, not a front row player.
I agree Annabelle played well. She could get some playing time next year. With the Covid year probably five years is enough and then move on to the next phase of life.
Lougeay seems to be injury prone. I hope she's available for the tournament. IMO Lougeay is a better option than Beaven or Berty in the back row.
Oglivie played well. Stanford needs another Oglivie in the back row next season.
If you go by RPI Stanford's chances of hosting are zero. If you go by the AVCA poll Stanford's chances of hosting are somewhat realistic. IMO the Cardinal really doesn't deserve to host. Their really good wins were all at the beginning of the season.

Mimi played beach with Plummer
Agree Lougeay would be better than the two you mentioned. She is obviously seriously injured it happens
Thanks on the Covid year for Annabelle

Annabelle SMITH losing her redshirt would mean that all of Stanford's returning MBs (including McKenna VICINI and Leilah SMITH) have 3 years of eligibility left (all three includes the covid year extension). It will be interesting how that 3-player rotation at MB plays out over the next 2 years (or 3 years, if all decide to stay for the covid year extension).
Stanford will also have a 3-player OH rotation over the next 2 years (or 3 years, if BAIRD decides to stay for the covid year extension), with Caite BAIRD (3 years left including covid year), Sammi FRANCIS (3 years left) and incoming freshman Ella RUBIN (4 years).
And then, the OPP position will have 2 more years of Kendall KIPP, with FRANCIS as her back-up.
Finally, you have Kami MINER manning the setting position over the next three years, with Selena XU and Malia TUFUGA as her back-ups.
Will this group, with a year of experience albeit injury-marred under their belt (for most of them), be enough to give Stanford their 10th national championship?

Next year we will be as good as our defense is. With almost everyone of note back, I expect us to be in contention, but I think it won’t quite be enough for a national title. Health willing, I could see us winning the PAC-12 and making it to the final four.

I just did a little research on the greatest 4-year track in collegiate WVB. We all know who the first three are:
1) Penn State - National Champions for 4 straight years (2007-2010)
2) Stanford - National Champion (1994) / National Semi-Finalist (1995) / National Champions (1996-1997) - the FOLKL years
2) Stanford - National Champion (2016) / National Semi-Finalist (2017) / National Champions (2018-2019) - the PLUMMER years
but right below those TWO (2) Stanford dynasties is:
4) Nebraska - National Champion (2015) / National Semi-Finalist (2016) / National Champion (2017) / National Finalist (2018) - the FOECKE years
I absolutely had fun with the play of words between the almost rhyming "FOLKL years" and "FOECKE years".....

No question about it… if we can just find Morgan Hentz 2.0.

Oglive is not Hentz, but she is a very good libero. But she can’t play defense by herself.
