MBB: at COLORADO (Loss 76-80) -
martyup - 11-28-2021
We are down 5 at the half.
And now we lead by 2 with a 7-0 run to start the second half.
Game is on Pac-12 network.

When Ingram is bringing the ball up court, it's hard to believe that he is 6'7". He has the ball handling skills of a PG.
Jones with 4 fouls with 8 minutes to play. We trail by 1.
Battey appears to still have anger management issues.

Ah. Let's not spend all that frustration in one place. There's also MBB.
J/k. Glad someone else remembered there was a game. Down by one with 6:32 left in the 2nd half. Let's go CARD!
Can't view the stats from the Stanford homepage link. I need to login to some account. WTH?

Game tied with just over 3 minutes to play.
Stats here:

Jones is 5-5 and 3-3 from three. Money.
Suffering Bill Walton commentary.
Walton is insane.
Ingram hits a 3 to bring us to within 2 with 13.5 seconds to play.
I really feel sorry for Walton's co-host.
We lose 76-80. Not a bad showing for our team. We were in it to the end. Could have won it.

In it till the end, true, but I expect Haase's teams to lose these games, especially away. Too much cold shooting, too many turnovers, and, this time, too many bad fouls.

It really did feel like we could have had this one. We gave up too many 7 point runs.

That's the late November view. We've been here before as a Haase team can look OK against good teams in November, but somehow manages to lose by a few points. So close, so much potential, could be a great season if this or if that.
Stanford plays Colorado in Maples on Feb 19th.
Given the Haase pattern I suspect Stanford will lose that rematch by more than 10 points.
And will close out the season going 0-3 in March.
Would really love to see Stanford basketball and Haase break that pattern, but so far the this season looks just like the last few.

These are the type of games we need to win to get to the dance. We need to be something like 7-2 at home and 4-5 on the road in conference to have a shot.
A .500 conference record won't do it. Are we going to get a signature win against an OOC opponent?
The talent is nearly there, but seem to still be missing a top-level PG (all conference) like TT.
From what I have seen, our current best 5 are MOC, Ingram, Spencer, Delaire/Murrell, and Raynaud.
Taitz, Isa, Angel, and Kisunas (lack of bigs) spell the starters. The others get in at garbage time or due to foul trouble.

Stanford shot 41.7% from three.
I doubt that kind of percentage is what we'll see moving forward in the conference (it was 30.8% against Baylor and 28% against Santa Clara), but if it is, then the team will pull off some nice victories, I think.
The other big opportunity to improve is to cut down on turnovers, but somehow that seems even less likely to me than shooting well from three.

I taped and watched the whole thing. I've been critical of Haase for two years now but was impressed that we looked fairly organized and played with purpose. Iff Battie wasn'lt 5 for 5 (?) on 3's we could have won. He couldn't repeat vs the Bruins tonight. Just watched some of UCLA-Col this eve and Col was down by 6 o so with 5 min to go. UCLA then pulled away.
Spencer Jones hit several threes, a couple over defenders and a couple on semi screens. Reynaud ws effective but didn't play a whole lot. Mountain air? This opened time for Kisunas who was at his best in two years, challenging shots without fouling and finishing offensively under the basket.
Ingram looks like baby Draymond bringing the ball up but his shot wasn't dropping. Delaire started with Ingram and Reynaud and looked lost the whole game. He might wonder what his role is. Angel is 75% improvd over last year. Stronger, more assertive and taking good shots and making them.
Taitz was hot and was ok on d (better than usual). At least he's not afraid. MOC plays so hard which hides his limitations. Made maybe 3 nice shots. Silva made a three but also did one of those jump in the air and what do I do now moves leading to a TO. I think he's done that every game I've watched this year
All in all better than I expected.

Just an aside, and NOT to encourage thread drift, but Mad Dog's Utah Valley Wolverine's (7-1) upset #12 BYU, 72-65 last night. I'm trying to find a recording of the game.

How cool would it be to get Mad Dog to replace Hasse. EUTM

Keeping my fingers crossed. MBB hasn't really had any EUTM for more than 15 years

Stanford has never had EUTM in hoops program, at least from coaching ranks. (Though I guess Bruce Pearl was an assistant here for a bit way back when). Actually, the current guy/staff are undoubtedly the closest thing we've had to EUTM on the hoops side. At least from this angle.

Bruce Pearl ? Really. Later yes at Stanford not yet.

In case it wasn't clear, I was simply commenting on the closest thing to a Harbaugh EUTM we've seen on the hoops side.
For head coaches, I'd say Haase is the closest. That guy's (and his staff's) motor is going non-stop to try and better Stanford hoops. The only guy personality-wise that approached Harbs' style, imo, was Bruce Pearl. And he was an assistant at Stanford in early 80s.
I'm making no comments/recommendations/predictions on who should be Stanford's hoop coach down the road, though it would be great if Haase's teams made some post-season noise and he stuck around for a while.

I was commenting on Bruce’s lack of EUTH at Stanford. Of course private and public two different things
Of course Dad Harbaugh out did them all of you where at Zots that time :)

Crossed paths with Bruce Pearl when he tried to recruit me to the "gray team" as an undergrad; he makes Harbaugh seem somnambulent by comparison.
Haase definitely is the head coach with the most EUTM in the last half century, but it's a pretty low bar since Stanford has had a series of reserved personalities in charge.
P.S. Stanford Basketball related: Brook Lopez suffered a setback and just underwent back surgery, bad news.
