Cardboard ratings -

I don't pay much attention to it anymore but come on. I noticed a certain poster had a rating of minus ten. Holy crap! Granted he (she?) has strong opinions but another poster has carpet bombed him (her) with many recent negatives. So mostly because I agree with the first poster I gave him (her) some pluses. This is grammar schoolyard B.S. I assume that if lines are crossed in a post the Minders will handle it. My advice FWIW is to drop the system. It's childish. What do you all think?

For some reason, I'm not allowed to rate comments. That "privilege" was taken away even before I was sent into exile. . . .

Crimson... that could be a Thunderdome penalty.
LOL, so I get docked for starting this thread. Extreme LOL.

It would be interesting to have thumbs up/down ratings for individual posts. When someone takes a stand on something it would be valuable to know how much support there is for said position.

As an old
Bootleg guy (present at the creation, BTW), I think of a low rating on this board as a high honor. Some of the posters here, I swear, are ringers from GoStanford.com. Or trolls from Arrillaga--hey, they have nothing else to do.

That was an add-on we had in our previous board software, but Yvonne couldn't find a similar one for this software. The system in the current software is oriented to rating the posters rather than the posts, which has the obvious drawback of promoting petty feuds.

I sort of understand the ratings system, sort of. But there's another thing that shows up on my posts in addition to my rating: a line that says "warning level 0%" I don't see such a description on posts from others. What does this mean? Is there a concern that I might be a troll but haven't revealed myself as such yet, but you never know? (BTW, I'm not a troll, or a robot either!)

If you're talking about me, Phogge, no worries. To the extent I even notice these things, I take a little pleasure in thinking that I've bunched somebody's panties so much that they feel compelled to respond with a thumbs down (or whatever it is you do to unlike a poster). It gives me a chuckle, frankly.
And remember, it's a free country - so fire away with those negative ticks!

Yes, I have also noticed a tendency for certain posters to get panned almost categorically, regardless of what they write, while others are sporting double and triple digit ratings for no obviously better posts. In all honesty, I find it difficult to justify these sizable differentials in Cardboard "status". Personally, I see the rating tool as a chance to "like" what somebody has posted, either because it was informative, witty, well-formulated or expressed an opinion I agreed with. I have never downrated anybody and never will. If certain individuals violate the board's standards, then the admins can dole out the punishment. And if I don't like what somebody else says, I move on or perhaps offer an alternative viewpoint. A forum like this lives from a variety of perspectives; and I often appreciate it when another member points out that I was wrong or misinformed.

It seems totally misguided to judge individual people and not their posts, so I refrain from using the rating system on this board.
Would be so much better if posts could be rated.

Agree with OF and others. The current system easily targets a poster who apparently pisses off another. Easier on T Dome where we would just yell at each other all the time. We KNEW we were childish.

The good news is that there are literally no consequences to user ratings. They're totally unrelated to warnings (which has to do with running afoul of board rules, and is itself very very rarely utilized by mods).
I agree that an ideal system would rate posts not users, but I don't think we're going to change board systems just for that feature, so we'll just have to live with it for the time being.

It's funny. I find it impossible to read text if there are any moving or flashing objects on the page. That's why I use adblocker software and despise intrusive ads.
On the other hand, I have no problem whatsoever in ignoring the reputation scores shown on each post. So much so that I'd honestly forgotten they exist.

Another problem with this rating system is that it can be manipulated. As a moderator, I can see who issues the ratings. (I'm not sure non-moderators can see that.) Some members that have relatively high rating counts have received almost all of their up votes by one other member. I guess they could have created two Cardboard accounts and used them to increase their reputation rating. Or they have a pact with another member to up vote each other. Seems pretty pathetic to me.
At least one other member with low reputation ratings have received almost all of their negative votes from one other member. This looks like a vendetta and seems pretty childish.
I just ignore it and certainly wouldn't miss it were it discontinued.

As a user, I can click to see the specifics /details re everyone's ratings from my laptop, but somehow not from my phone. I guess the mobile platform is somehow different.
RE: Cardboard ratings -
BostonCard - 11-30-2021
In theory, ratings are an incentive not to be a jerk and to produce high signal to noise posts, but for that to work in practice, people would have to care enough not to be douchey, and the ratings would have to be based on the quality of the posts and not whether the reader agreed or didn’t agree with them. I agree with those who said that the old system (rating posts rather than people) was better. That made it easier to skip low quality posts, without the system being able to be manipulated to send an individual poster into the red undeservedly. And, though I disagree with Teejers a lot, he adds a lot to the board and certainly doesn’t deserve a negative rating.

Yeah, I see them too -- though I never paid any attention before this thread. I mostly lurk here anyway.

Only the individual member and the mods see the warning levels. It's a way the mods can send a message that a post is off base and have the user fix the situation. The default, I think is five points and lasts a day.

I've turned off the reputation system and will see whether I can find something equivalent to the old system. You can give stars to a whole thread, but that doesn't help for posts within a thread.

Wise choice, admin, and thanks Phogge for broaching the issue. FWIW, I never voted anyone down, only up, and usually because they made me chuckle.
And I never noticed that we could rate entire threads!
