Based on what I've read, shame on the university for scapegoating the sailing coach (who was not innocent, by any means), protecting all those above him as well as a culture in the AD that has pressured coaches to fundraise to that extent. My gut also feels pretty strongly that BM has been a puppet for a while -- how else could he still have his job after all the shite that's gone down?

A puppet for whom? Neither his boss the Provost nor the University President really care about Athletics.

For football I can give him a pass.   He was hired from Georgetown, so football was an area that was somewhat new to him.   Presumably loads of administrators know the importance of a viable football program for DAPER, and he has a 4 time Pac-12 COY and Stanford alum at the healm.  So I would not have expected him to jump in and start tearing things up like he knew exactly how to improve a football program.

For basketball the situation is different.   I thought coming from Georgetown he would understand the potential value of a successful basketball program and the importance of having a coach that really can get the most from the players.   Haase has been so disappointing late in seasons, and our community apathy should have been addressed soon after Muir arrived.    Worse, even if Muir limited potential hires to current Stanford alums there are a couple that should be getting calls right now.

I really hope Muir's situation is addressed soon because I think most up and coming coaches would have some concerns about coming to a program when the current AD is on shaky ground.

It's a real surprise that a school with a puppet at top has won all those NCAA championships & Director's Cups.
I guess we should be celebrating the unknown puppet master.

Dominating college sports isn't enough?  Some fans demand dominating every sport, or at least a particular two.

Well yeah. The two that the vast majority of college sports fans care about the most. Stanford is no longer seen as a "great sports school" DESPITE winning all those other championships and DCs, because those main two suck.

approaching multiple people maps a lot of what I see in real life dealing with external parties at work, if they can't get what they want through me they will continue to approach others in hopes of finding someone who will give them what they want

It also looks like he's trying to drum up some publicity for his book which is currently #203,049 at Amazon for all books and #164 for sailing books

1. The two "main ones" haven't always sucked
2. Without revenue from those two, the house of cards collapses without tens of millions from the University

You insinuate that Muir is the architect of the department that achieved all the Director's Cup accolades. IMHO, Bernie's biggest achievements have been (1) getting hired and (2) keeping his job.

Football revenues are going to decline precipitously next season with (a) crappy schedule, and (b) the same architect of "entertaining football" at the helm.  Have no clue if the dip will be sufficient to gain anyone's attention, but that wouldn't surprise me.  Also, am very concerned about the game day atmosphere for next season (CalFan and NDFan papered over some of the extant rot this past season).  And the record will only exacerbate the no-shows.

So Singer was poking around for year but no one saw fit to call it out?  Sounds like a culture problem.  And the Athletic Director sets the culture, at least for DAPER.

Try this though: Stanford has an endemic culture of negative reporting of Bad Things Going On.  Keep it quiet, protect the institution, etc.  Kind of a theme across Stanford over the past decade, maybe longer.  Some bright spots lately /w/ frats, LSJUMB, etc... but doesn't surprise me that some guy can sneak around the Stanford Athletics landscape for seven years with no one making a big stink about it.   When I was at school and Ted Leland was the AD, I feel like the culture in DAPER was different.  For sure there were issues, but I felt like compliance and ethics weren't among them.
