Championship Weekend - Austroturf - 12-04-2021

So far, Oklahoma State does not look like a CFP team.  Sanders has thrown two costly picks, and the Cowboys trail Baylor 14-3 in the 2nd quarter.

Baylor’s early success mirrors Stanford 2010-15. Run to set up the pass. They have a back who doesn’t go down with the first hit. Remember Stephan and Gaffney? So Okie has to respect the run and the Baylor receivers are open. Helps that the QB can get the ball off in a hurry.

They have a Dartmouth transfer. Stanford hamstrings itself with the school’s transfer policy.

Lastly Baylor has a D lineman who is in the Wade Perry weight range. But a totally different player, quick and mobile.

Not going to lie, if Notre Dame somehow does sneak in I think I have to root for them to win it all, for no other reason than Kelly leaving for LSU to win an NC there and he could have won by staying put.  That would be too funny.

But still only down by one score.  Baylor's QB, Shapen, appears to be slightly injured in the shoulder of his throwing arm.  That could seriously stall their offense.
Baylor misses the FG off the pick, so it's still just an 8 point game.
Seems as if neither team really wants to win this game.  Off the 4th Sanders pick, Baylor's drive stalls, and they miss the FG.  The Baylor defense stops the Cowboys, but their punt-returner muffs the catch, and the ball is recovered by OK State.  The Cowboys get down to the half yard line, but cannot punch it in and almost fumble the ball away.  18 inches from scoring the equalizer, OK State settles for a chip shot FG to close to 21-16.  Comedy of errors.

Now I almost want to see Bama win the SEC CG and Michigan lose the BigTen CG.

In that scenario it could then become..
Bama, Georgia, Cincinnati and Notre Dame

That would mean 4 of the Power 5 conferences would be left out of the CG.   And if that happens, then maybe the powers involved would craft the next version to make sure that each Power 5 conference winner gets into the CFP.

It probably won't happen that way, but it sure looks like Notre Dame will get into the CFP if Georgia wins the SEC.    It would be funny if Kelly left Notre Dame for a better chance to win the CFP, only to then see Notre Dame get in and then win the CFP this season.

Funny, I'm pulling for the opposite.  I don't like two SEC teams in the Playoff, and I don't like ND in the Playoff.  However, it now seems a foregone conclusion that we will either have two SEC teams or the Domers (or both in your scenario!)   

I don't think ND has earned it.  Their best win is Wisconsin, and they don't have to play anyone good (or anyone at all) this week.  They need to start scheduling 12 13 games or join a conference.  

Even in the scenario where the Bearcats lose to Houston, I'm not sure ND would deserve to be in the Playoff over Cincy.  They were pretty badly beaten at home by Cincy, and Cincy only would have lost that extra game against a ranked opponent this week because they actually had to play one.  I hope it doesn't come to this and the Bearcats take care of business today.

I was entertained by the defensive stand to end Baylor-OK State. You think OK State has a go-ahead score sewn up after PI call on Baylor in the end zone, but somehow they wind up with nothing when their RB on 4th and 1 sprints and dives for the pylon but falls just short. Great hustle by an undersized defender to make the play, though I wonder if the bigger back might have had a shot of overpowering the smaller man to get the yard.

Could Utah have beaten either team? I think so.

Houston and Cincy... dynamic receivers and QB’s who are mobile.

Stanford... old fashioned statue QB and receivers who have trouble getting open.

I hope that Shaw gives Patu a shot at starting.

Both teams were compromised.  The Cowboys were lacking their top RB, while the Bears were missing their starting QB.  There were a host of TOs and muffs to punctuate the game.  Utah would have smoked both of them, because Utah has most of its key players in the lineup.
Meanwhile, Georgia is up 3-0 with Alabama driving.

I could root for Cal as a respected (kinda) opponent.  Couldn't root for USC under any circumstances.  Can't really root for Domers either, although if they win the NC without Kelly, I agree that it'd be a hoot.  But I don't think ND would win anyway.  I could root for Harbaugh, a nutjob who is one among many, many other nutjobs in that state.

Bama leads Georgia 17-10 with 3 minutes left in the first half.  My assessment after 27 minutes: Bama has the better QB.  Young > Bennett.  That could be the final difference.  Neither team seems able to run.  Both front sevens are stout against the rushing attack.

I don't think Baylor, tOSU or Notre Dame would be more competitive than the second place SEC team.
It is too bad college football has been reduced to one conference, but that seems to be the 2021 situation.

I think Michigan is the best non-SEC team, but I suspect they will not be able to run the ball against the SEC teams.
Cincy, ND, Baylor, tOSU and the rest fighting for the last spots will just be pushed around in the semis.

Yes, I tend to agree with this assessment.  After an entire season, my take on the best 4 teams is: Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and tOSU.  I think all four would maul Cincy and ND.  Baylor is missing its starting QB and is maybe top ten in the best case.

Yes, I tend to agree with this assessment.  After an entire season, my take on the best 4 teams is: Georgia, Alabama, Michigan and tOSU.  I think all four would maul Cincy and ND.  Baylor is missing its starting QB and is maybe top ten in the best case.

tOSU?  Both Oregon and Michigan ran for 250-300 yards on them. Oregon, it turns out, is not very good, and they were without Thibodeaux at the time.   I think you are overvaluing tOSU's wins over decent but actually not very good B1G teams.  

I agree that Georgia and Alabama would probably maul the rest.

Regardless of that fact, I disagree that Alabama should be in the Playoff with a loss today.  It's just a personal opinion, but I don't like that a team with two losses can get a second crack at the champs of their conference.  As long as we're limited to four spots, the CCGs ought to be seen as a quarterfinal.
