Notes on the 2022 Stanford Football Personnel grid:

1. I decided on one grid this season, namely one that lists players by class year and not one that lists players by eligibility. Last year I did both. In previous years, I just had the eligibility grid. However, with the eligibility from 2020 wiped out, it makes that grid a bit unwieldy at the present time; I think the class-year grid looks cleaner. Let me know if the eligibility grid would be more useful and I would be happy to construct one of those as well.

2. To the 2021 Stanford Football Personnel grid, I have added 28 players.
    a. The 27-person incoming “CardClass22”
    b. Scotty Edwards, a safety who signed two years ago, but deferred entry to do his church mission
    c. If we have more additions, especially as we approach the February official signing day, I will add them as well.

3. From the 2021 Stanford Football Personnel grid, I have removed 23 players. I have denotated players who regularly started in bold.
    a. Three sixth-year players who have exhausted their eligibility
          ==> OLB Jordan Fox, QB Isaiah Sanders, RB Dorian Maddox
    b. Ten players who are seeking a transfer. These players can elect to remove themselves from the transfer portal at any time; I will cross out those names of players electing to do so and return to Stanford for a fifth or sixth year. Schools to which these players transfer will be added parenthetically after their names once they find a new football home.
          1) Four fifth-year players
              ==> OLB Gabe Reid (Utah), FB Houston Heimuli (BYU), DE Ryan Johnson (Northwestern), OLB Thunder Justice Keck
          2) Two senior scholarship players
              ==> OLB Andres Fox (Virginia), OLB Loa Kaufusi (retired from football; now getting MBA at BYU); senior RB Justus Woods (retired from football; now at Bain) is also in the transfer portal, though he left the team back in September
          3) Two senior walk-ons
              ==> LS Kyle Petrucci (Utah), DE Trey LaBounty (Miami (OH))
          4) Two juniors
              ==> RB Nathaniel Peat (Missouri), RB Austin Jones (USC); junior Joshua Pakola (Fresno State) is also in the transfer portal - as he was in early 2021, before removing his name - though he was not on the team in 2021 for some unknown (to me) reason
    c. Three senior walk-ons graduating (with eligibility remaining) [note: these are my projections only; should they want to continue playing and if they were invited back, any of these players could return for a fifth year, though it would be on their own dime]
          ==> ILB Jake Lynch, QB Dylan Plautz, RB Cameron McFarlane
    d. Three scholarship players declaring for the NFL draft (with eligibility remaining); NFL draft status and teams will be added parenthetically after their names once they are drafted or signed as undrafted free agents
          1) Two fifth-year players
              ==> DT DWP (undrafted), TE/DE Tucker Fisk (UDFA, Falcons)
          2) One senior
              ==> DE Thomas Booker (5th round, Texans)
    e. Four scholarship players graduating (with eligibility remaining) [note: these are my projections only; should they want to continue playing and depending on scholarship availability, any of these players could be invited to return]
          1) One fifth-year player
              ==> S Noah Williams
          2) Three seniors
              ==> QB Jack West, CB Donjae Logan, ILB Caleb Kelly

4. The grid is fluid. Some of the players I have projected to graduate from the team could return, and some of those in the transfer portal could return. In addition, because there are more than 85 scholarship players on the grid at present, additional scholarship players must leave the roster, either as graduates, transfers, retirements, or draft declarations. I will update the grid as decisions are made.

5. When a player is rostered at two positions, I have listed them according to the position named on the front side of the slash. For instance, if a player is rostered as offensive tackle/guard, I have listed them as a tackle. The only exception to this is the Devery Hamilton Rule, according to which, if a player ends up getting more playing time at the position named at the backside of the slash, they are considered rostered at that position; e.g., if a tackle/guard ends up playing guard, I switch them to guard in the grid.

6. I have removed all injury designations, though I realize that some players are still injured. This is a projection for the fall, when I am hoping we will have a healthy roster. I have kept other positional responsibility designations when the player is returning.

7. You will note that I have projected starters marked for some positions, but not others. I have only marked starters at positions where I think we are reasonably sure who the starters will be. I am happy to designate starter status to players if and when it seems we are reasonably sure who the starter will be, e.g., it is announced by coaches, a possible starter transfers leaving an obvious candidate, an injury or poor spring performance removes a player from consideration, etc.

I Agree that having it by class year is more useful.  In this day and age, we should not assume that fourth year players, even those who redshirted, will be back for a fifth year.

Every starter on offense projected to return. If the offense had been good this year, that would be incredible fortune. As it stands, we have to cross our fingers that the OL can be coached up this spring. But it’s not implausible. The offense improved dramatically from the ‘98 team to the ‘99 team. Obviously a different time, different players, and different coaches, but there is hope. 

The defense returns a bunch of starters too. The back 7-8 had more than its share of issues this year, but with Kelly returning, you can see the makings of two competent units on the defense. But this chart really brings the dire situation on the DL into relief. One scholarship DT returning and no returning players have logged more than 5 tackles in a season. Even you assume Pakola will return and that Keneley can put his hand in the dirt, no one has more than 7 tackles in a season. If you squint, you might be able to see a path to filling these spots, but it requires rose colored glasses.

I feel like a broken record repeating this: "DT" vs. "DE" means nothing in a 2-4-5 nickel base, which we run consistently.

Not that you're wrong about how dire the DL situation is, because holy crap is it bad. If only this was foreseeable years ago...oh wait, it totally was.

I’m less concerned with beef up front in the nickel than in the 4-3. But Stanford still needs a defense with a front 7 that uses at least 3 true DLs. And I’d prefer to have more than 1 scholarship athlete on defense who weighs more than 271 lbs.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but whether in 2-4-5 (which we even ran a lot out of necessity when Horrible Harry was our only dependable d-lineman), 4-3, or 3-4, it is challenging to figure out who the front will be. The three freshmen OLB will play a lot, as will Armitage and Franklin. But none of those guys are hole-fillers at the point of attack. We need beef. Some guys are going to have to put on a lot of weight - maybe Moi or Buckey or Franklin.

At any rate, watching the defense against the run next year could be really frustrating.

Changing now is too late and will not help for this upcoming year - it usually takes a year or 2 to really acclimate to the switch. The younger guys will be upperclassmen by the time that happens and we won't have this depth issue anymore. I am holding onto hope (probably for nought) that Fisk will return for a sixth year as a basically-full-time DL. Spot's all his if he wants it. Otherwise this is the exact scenario in which a grad transfer band-aid would be ideal.

Drake Nugent was an all-state DT in HS, so I had proposed him switching a couple years ago (WHEN IT WAS ALREADY CLEAR THIS WOULD BE AN ISSUE). I had assumed due to his low rating Drake Metcalf would beat him out for the C spot. However, it turns out I was wrong and he's actually a very solid C, so moving him now makes no sense.

I had not considered Fisk as a candidate to return. That would be such a welcome turn of events. I guess the hope is that he wants a master’s degree and didn’t get admitted last year but that he improved his academic record enough to get admitted this year. That would be a pretty impressive accomplishment.

No, the hope is that he wants to play more football/show a full year of DL on tape and can stretch out the Masters in Earth Systems he is currently getting. We had three sixth-year seniors on this year's team. It's possible, though obviously unlikely.
