Sad. Big John was maybe the best Ambassador the NFL ever had.

When it comes to NFL ambassadors, Madden and Steve Sabol stand head and shoulders above everyone else. No one else comes close to bringing as many people to football as those two did.
I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing Madden on my Apple IIc growing up.......

Really liked Madden, as a coach, as a broadcaster, as a pitchman, as a videogame maker, as a person, etc
One of those overall genuine type of guys. A guy you could spend hours listening to his stories.
I had the thought that he may be in his last weeks when they televised "all Madden" this past weekend. Turns out to not have been far off. RIP.

Yep. Probably a dozen times at his studio in Pleasanton, Goaline Productions. Mrs. TC production managed the teaser promos for the first season of Fox coverage of the NFL at Memorial Stadium.
And for Troy Steve Sabol was just as good a man in his personal relationships as he was a giant in the broadcasting industry.

All too often I hear announcers in many sports who are not really talking about the game they are announcing or the players who are playing. I want my announcers to help me understand and appreciate the game I am watching--to call my attention to details or things I might otherwise have missed. Madden was a master of that.

Most of them put on stuffed shirts over time. Bryant Gumbal was an incredible jerk when he was at KNBC LA. However he matured a bit although he waved a penalty flag on another African American reporter on his short lived CBS magazine show. Boom Boom Berman was a terror on the set. Of course he had cause... working for ESPN. Leslie Stahl could be the nicest woman on the planet one week and an absolute Cruella another week. You learned to live with it or just refuse to take assignments with some correspondents or producers. The very best to work with were Don Klein, Russ Hodges, Steve Sabol, Morley Safer, Harry Reasoner and Frank Reynolds.
Madden was always great to everybody on our crews but we were working for Films and the company occupies a unique place in American journalism.

I remember watching a Niners game with my dad. Madden was announcing it, and at the time, the Niners had frisbee and ball catching dogs during halftime I think. The crew cut to a golden retriever, with a ball getting it's belly rubbed, happy as can be. After a few comments, Madden jealously observed ". . . . what a great life that must be". My dad replied, "I think he really means that." According to Millen, my dad was right.
