WBB: Stanford 82 Washington State 44 -
81alum - 12-29-2021
Preview:
Following our difficult 1-1 trip to the south and the nailbiter loss to South Carolina, we return to the West for a trip that was originally going to include Washington and Washington State. Unfortunately, protocols in the Washington team caused the cancellation of that game, but the more difficult part of the road trip remains: Washington State. By now fans of this board know the story: Washington State WBB has never in its history beaten Stanford WBB--an extraordinary record. But WSU has become much more competitive in recent years as coach Kamie Ethridge got them to the NCAAs last year for the first time in 30 years.
Ethridge has been riding on the production of the Leger-Walker sisters from New Zealand, chiefly sophomore Charlisse, a 5'10" guard, who has averaged 17ppg in a mix of treys, drives, and mid rangers that are quite difficult to defend. WSU's second leading scorer is Bella Murekatete, a 6'3" junior center from Rwanda averaging 12 pts and 9 rebounds, and with 24 blocks already in this young season. Krystal Leger-Walker is more the point guard, with a good assist/turnover ratio. WSU tends to start Ula Matuga, an Aussie guard, and Johanna Teder, an Estonian guard, but at times has started Tara Wallack, a 6'2" freshman Canadian guard. Thus all 5 starters and the 6th off the bench are not from the United States, making this an interesting international team. Just getting everyone to Pullman for the season must have required some logistical juggling, and I doubt that many (if any) of these teammates traveled home for the holidays.
The Cougs are 8-3 so far this year, unranked, rated 45 by Massey. We have two common opponents. They beat UC Davis handily, 68-42, and barely edged Gonzaga 51-49. I am struck by how similar to our own scores both of those games were. In their marquee game against North Carolina State they fell apart and lost 34-62, but they beat Miami handily and also USF, which has proven to be a tough team this year. However, WSU has lost its last two on the road to BYU and then were thrown into a make up game the next day when Cornell cancelled and Stony Brook was added. They lost to Stony Brook 62-69. That last loss hurt a lot. That was Stony Brook's first win at home over a power 5 opponent in its history, and it just shows how the topsy-turvy world of Covid can confound the best laid plans. (San Diego's surprising showing against Texas is a similar scenario, although they did not win.) In the loss to Stony Brook Charlisse did score 19 points, but shot badly, going 6-27. If she had hit at her average level (37%) the outcome would have been different.
WSU is a better team than the last loss would indicate, and they are playing at home in a place that it is very difficult to travel to--particularly in the depth of winter snow storms. Let's hope Tara can keep the team focused on this (at times) dangerous opponent and get us back to Maples with another win.

I'd say the HULL sisters will neutralize the LEDGER-WALKER sisters using their length and hustle. Then the combinaiton of BRINK, PRECHTEL and BELIBI overwhelms WSU 6'3 center MUREKATETE. But what I want to see in this game is Haley JONES finally overcoming her shooting woes especially from midrange and start leading this team in scoring.
My prediction:
***********
Stanford leads by as much as 20+ points by the 3rd quarter, then just cruises to a double-digit victory.

In an Omicron world, our depth should mean that any protocol-related absences will favor us over the competition.

I wouldn’t be too quick to count out WSU at home. They’ve taken some hits this year — many of us who hung around after the Stanford win in the Bahamas to watch WSU get overwhelmed physically and psychically by NC State left the game at halftime. Still, they have skill (many returning players from last year’s team) and a great deal of home-town pride (they’ve played us tough lately).
Stanford needs to learn how to put two consecutive halfs together this season. Teams have made halftime adjustments to our offense, and we have not seemed to anticipate the need for a counter-strategy in the second half. There is much to learn in a young season, and it is critical for our women to not go into Pullman overconfident.
We have the better team and Tara successfully strategized a defense against the younger W-L sister last year. Coming away healthy from Washington is another important consideration. I recall a questionable hit by Teder last year that could have put one of our key players out.

At least the Hull family and fan club should be there, it being 90 minutes away from Spokane! That makes two games in their vicinity in one season.

It’s amazing to me that I’m in Idaho at the moment, and Pullman is still 10 hours away.

I grew up in Idaho (southern) and Moscow/Pullman might as well have been on the other side of the planet. Highway 95 which connected the south with the north was a long, windy, mountainous 2 lane highway that did not fully connect until after WWII. Whitebird Hill and Lewiston Hill on that highway each had multiple hairpin switchbacks, and driving those roads in the winter was perilous.
As a result, northern Idaho has always been economically linked to the Spokane region, with which it shares the same time zone, while southern Idaho is a place and a time zone apart.
The other highway carnage worth mentioning in this context was the 10 mile highway from Pullman to Moscow (Tara's original coaching job was at the University of Idaho.) For years Idaho had a lower drinking age than Washington, leading to hoards of college students driving that highway from Pullman to Moscow to get to the Idaho bars. In the winter, with black ice common, on a two lane road and mixed with alcohol--countless tragedies. The national drinking age in 1989 at least put an end to that.

I think South Carolina just lost to Missouri. Is that correct?

Do you not know how to look up the scores of games? SC losing happened yesterday and was already discussed under the general WBB board. This is the Stanford/Washington State thread.

My advice: just shrug off those who insist on thread topic adherence (and that you be up to speed on all threads on this board before you post anything). I mean, the combined "Giants/Niners" thread of some 70 pages or so just reinforces the . . . quirkiness of things around here. Heaven help us if there were a separate thread on 'Niners-Texans game on this Stanford board. The Horror!
But the overall content is good/pleasant enough, so just roll with it. (And of course, the price can't be beaten!).

All true, TJ. It was the smug question that p@#$% me off.

WSU just routed Cal, 69-42, but Cal was missing the services of its top scoring freshman sensation Jayda CURRY (20.1 ppg) as well as Jazlen GREEN (9.5 ppg) and Dalayah DANIELS (7.4 ppg) - that's a combined 36.0 ppg which corresponds to 46% of their aggregate scoring. This goes to show how these covid health protocols can adversely affect the outcome of games. This could have been anybody's game had CURRY and either GREEN or DANIELS were available.
I just hope that Stanford won't be missing the services of most of its top players vs WSU on Sunday due to these covid health protocols.

Just go to ESPN.COM, then used the menu to get to WBAA, then chose "scores." The ones that come up at once are top 25, but if you want pac-12 other than those in the top 25, you can chose to look at scores other than top 25. It's easy to get to, always my quidk go-to for scores

It's actually "NCAAW" not "WBAA", but I'm sure the person who asked the question would have figured it out. The initial response (not from you) was unnecessarily rude.

Right. Thanks for fixing that. I think I wrote WBAA when my brain was in fuzz mode. One of the things I appreciate about the Cardboard is that people are helpful and understanding of the questions of others -- there are a lot of experts here (not including me) and I learn a lot from them. It's good that we respect the questions people ask. They ask because they don't know something and want to know.

Thanks. Yep, I've been following scores for too long... I'm told. Having been busy over the holidays, on this post I was just asking whether a message I had recently received from a friend was accurate, and, perhaps if I had been paying attention, I would have transferred to a different portal. But, thanks again.

One of the advantages of all the cancellations and waiting so long to play is that there is no chance any of our players will take any game for granted. Each game is precious now. Could this game be the last game that Lacie and Lexie play in front of their Washington fan base? I think we are going to come out and play hard.

I sure hope so.
All these game "postponements" had me wondering if Geno was just saving 'em all up for when St. Paige gets back.
