Ready for some GOOD news??? Patrick Fields, Oklahoma's 2nd leading tackler this season as a safety, is grad transferring to Stanford.
Fields is an Academic All American and a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy (nation's absolute best football scholar-athlete), the Wuerffel Trophy (FBS player who best exhibits exemplary community service) and the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year (outstanding leadership on and off the field).

Perhaps he can give Akina some pointers about playing safety.

Just took a scroll through the replies, almost uniformly a bad idea, but man it seems like every person in Oklahoma loves this guy. Seems like a great get, I especially hope he does well against his old coach.

He was also defensive MVP of the Alamo Bowl vs the Ducks. Now he gets another chance to shine against them next year.

We’ve done well with transfers from Oklahoma.

Before the champagne is opened are you guys sure that he will play. Probably, but the kid seems classy and serious about the masters.
Yep BC, Beeler and Milburn.

He will be playing football, at least according to this article.

"On a full academic scholarship"?
I didn't realize Stanford gave academic scholarships, perhaps only for grad schools? Also, won't that still count as a football scholarship for the total we can offer?

Played 6 games his freshman year, started 14 games his sophomore year, started 10 games his junior year, started 12 games his senior year. Does he have eligibility left? Or is there some Covid rule? I don't know the rules any more, apparently.

I saw that about an academic scholarship as well. He will be a scholarship counter, regardless, assuming he plays.
Grad schools in STEM fields generally give scholarships for PhD students, but that includes having to TA and applying for federal (NSF, NIH, private) scholarships. The institution also would have funding from federal agencies for scholarships.
In non-stem fields, and for masters degrees, I’m not sure how it works, but it is harder to get scholarships and lots of students graduate with a lot of debt.

last season (2020) was a "free" season for players in football (and some other sports) and did not count vs eligibility

My understanding is 2020 doesn’t count against eligibility

Can he bring Marvin Mims with him? The former Stanford commit has done well in OK.

Per interview on TOS, Fields worked to get admitted to Stanford's graduate program solo - hence the academic scholarship.
THEN he contacted the football office about playing ball - evidently, they did not actively recruit the guy as a grad-transfer.
IF this is true, it perhaps is the ultimate example of Shaw's "recruiting prowess" - i.e., only self-selecting Stanford Men.
Good for the kid; good for Stanford football. Agree with a poster on TOS who opined that a player with this kind of leadership who actually plays can elevate the play of entire secondary. That would be great.

not defending Shaw but Fields does not appear to have ever entered the transfer portal so how was Shaw supposed to identify him as a potential graduate transfer?

I got my masters in Mechanical Engineering covered by a GEM Fellowship, which Stanford helped arrange. Fields looks like he'd qualify. Interestingly, the current program looks like it requires 2 summers of internship. I only did one. Finished my masters 3 quarters after undergrad.
