We do. Stanford ice hockey is a club sport that plays in division II.

As for a varsity team, in addition to facility issues (like an on/near campus rink), scheduling would be pretty rough. While ASU added a team recently, the other closest teams would be ColoradoCollege/Denver/AirForce in CO or Fairbanks/Anchorage in AK (and even Anchorage is having problems keeping their program afloat). So a lot of travel would be needed, which probably won't encourage the school to spend on it.

No Yvonne it’s Bush’s fault.
My nephew played for UCLA’s club team vs Cal at the arena near Broadway in Oakland. Tons of hot chocolate. Couldn’t stick around for my Gators in the nitecap. It’s not even close to pro hockey but you can sit very close and the kids are full of energy. A bit disappointed that there were no fights. A very enjoyable night.

For once I'd say it's not the David Shaw boogieman but actually the Title IX boogieman. Unless there's appetite for a women's hockey team too, where's the reduction in men's athletes going to come from? Alternatively, what club women's sports are left that could become D1? AFAIK, women's rugby, ultimate frisbee, and quidditch (LOL) are not D1 sports anywhere...

"We" just barely saved 11 established sports from oblivion...kind of obvious to me why we don't have additional varsity teams on top of that. But primarily, the Pac-12/MPSF don't sponsor varsity ice hockey. Reason 1b is the Title IX issues, as alluded to above.
