So today two highly coveted players entered the transfer portal.
Xavier Carlton, one time Stanford offer in the 2020 class who signed with Utah and played this season, has entered the portal.
OU Frosh QB and also one time Stanford offer in the 2021 class.
Both players were Top 100 recruits and say they need to explore the best opportunity for themselves, with Williams saying he might still stay at OU.
Would it be mere cynicism or likely just accurate to assume the "for sale" sign is being waved by these guys, both with three years eligibility remaining? I saw someone claiming Georgia already has a $2M NIL deal lined up for Williams.
Exactly, WTF is the NCAA doing? Does it really think it is gong to get away with having free labor for major revenue sports with this kind of unregulated market activity going on? How is the NCAA going to win a case in court that the players aren't professional and don't deserve to be paid, if pulling down NIL deals based on their ability to play the sport schools won't pay them for playing?
This whole system is gonna collapse on itself unless it is regulated in some sane fashion.

Do you want to post a link to the information suggesting that these two players are looking to bank NLI deals as part of a potential transfer? I don’t doubt that it’s happening, but I don’t know how we can say that these two people exemplify the trend, and that these two people don’t just want to transfer for other reasons.

Overall I agree with your point, but Caleb Williams, whose head coach and OC both left, and Xavier Carlton, who only started 2 games and played fewer and fewer snaps as the year went on, are weird examples with which to make it. Try GT star running back Jahmyr Gibbs transferring to Alabama, or one of Cal's starting OL transferring to Oklahoma. THAT'S free agency.
Also, a quick nit: Caleb Williams was never offered by Stanford. Door #1.

It seems silly (i.e., self-serving hypocrisy) to say the schools cannot pay players, but it's perfectly fine for them to arrange a million dollar endorsement at a local used car lot. They are all hand-picked ringers these days, so unless you change the recruiting system, you might as well pay them. How about a new rule: no NIL, no pay, and schools can only recruit within 500 miles of their campus.

They can't pay them because then they'd be considered employees, and that opens up a ton of cans of worms that schools don't want to deal with. I agree it's a tortured formalist line when they're just lining up NIL deals with car lots, but it is what it is. Come join the WBB crew, where there's not enough money (yet) to fully corrupt the sport!

The PAGA mills are already pushing businesses out of the state, they would doom those CA schools with sports teams if players were deemed employees.

We are caught in a very odd time, where the US Supreme Court has ruled that the NCAA can’t prevent players from getting NIL deals, but hasn’t yet ruled on whether players are employees, and the NCAA hasn’t yet started to regulate the NIL system (or even tested whether it can), so what we have is a Wild West out there.
The problem isn’t the dissonance between NIL deals and considering the players employees or not. The problem is the dissonance between how the business of collegiate sports operates, and how it treats student athletes. The NCAA has made choices that put the value of the product it sells ahead of the welfare of its student athletes, and now it will reap what it has sowed. I don’t want an end to amateurism, but I fully sympathize with players here.

+1. Really well said. If and when colleges must treat student-athletes as employees, the system will break, and fast. I'm not sure I'm unsympathetic to the student-athlete(-employees), but I don't think the present system can work if that changes, because there are too many legal and compliances complications to sustain present practices as they are.

QBs with first round grades are their own special animal. If you realistically can bet on being a first-rounder and talk yourself into confidently predicting a 10+ year NFL career, NIL money should mean almost nothing.

Except that you can't realistically bet on being a first-rounder. Look at the last ten years' worth of 5-star quarterbacks. Having to play in college for three years makes it a much different proposition than NBA prospects who spend one season in college or G-League and can't damage their prospects that much.

While you may be convinced you will make it big, I think if you try to borrow against your future income the discount rate will be pretty appalling. This is especially true when the NIL money is essentially effort free. Why not maximize both?

Absent of that, a contract is a contract, even if it's just for tuition, room and board.
Unfortunately right now, it's the institutions that throw the most NIL around that seem to be attracting the kids. Several months ago and before I was banned, I posted, semi-facetiously, about the Alfred E Newman Director of Endorsements, or something equally ridiculous. Every now and then, a blind squirrel finds a nut.
