WBB: Stanford 60 - Colorado 52 - 81alum - 01-12-2022

Preview:

Colorado has given us fits over the past few years.  First there is their coach, JR Payne, who led lowly Santa Clara to beat us before she went to Colorado in one of our worst losses of the last decade.  Then, at Colorado, she has continued to instill her bruising defensive style in ways that mess up our rhythm offense.  Last year they beat us in overtime at Colorado for one of our two losses.  Mya Hollingshed scored 32 in that one.  The previous year we only won when Williams heaved nearly a half court shot at the buzzer that went in.  We beat them a little more handily when they came to Maples.

Colorado essentially got everyone back this year, so they will be every bit as difficult and are probably improved over a year ago.  Hollingshed is maturing into an elite player.  She is averaging 15 points and makes 44% of her treys--not bad for a 6'3" super senior.  It is troubling that Tara's scouting report defense couldn't hold her to under 30 points last year.

This year Colorado improved by getting 6'3" center Quay Miller to transfer from Washington.  Miller is averaging 12 points and shooting 57%--what you want from a center.  Miller has not been starting but is their second leading scorer.

And of course Colorado continues to have Jaelynn Sherrod, a 5'7" junior guard who has torched us in the past.  She has a 4:1 assist:turnover ratio and is scoring about 9 ppg.

Frida Foreman, the three point shooting freshman sensation last year, is still their most prolific three point shooter but is only at 26%--I presume because everyone knows about her and defends her closely.

Peanut Tuitele is back again, not scoring prolifically but is a classic glue player and defensive star. 

Colorado is unbeaten, of course, and is beating other teams by a 19 point average margin--chiefly through its defense since they score about 70 points on average.  You would have to say they are a solid offensive team but a great defensive team, true to JR's form.  Their opponents shoot about 10 points less well than they do.

We have the better team, but the better team does not always win.  They have elevation, a defense that we know will ruin our offensive scheme and make us scrap for points, and some excellent key players.  It will be fascinating to see how Tara goes after Hollingshed this time.

Thanks for the preview 81; as you pointed out, Colorado has recently given us fits. It will be interesting to see whether Tara will add any wrinkles to our offense, to try to break their defense. Even though we have a new freshmen class to add to the equation, I am not sure whether Iriafen, who has had the most impact lately, can add anything to present too much of a different factor. Everyone else except Williams is back and except for Jump, there's no one significantly better than last year. Therefore, given our loss in Boulder last year, we should see if there's a new twist or something that can make us more effective against their defense.

Sherrod has played like Aari McDonald lately. Against UCLA, she had 25 points, 8 assists and 1 TO. In the prior game vs. USC, she also had 8 assists and 1 TO. Two years ago as a frosh, she was on the verge of leading Colorado to a brobdingnagian upset at Stanford (21 points, 7 assists) before Ashten Prechtel tied the game with 1.8 seconds left on an inbounds play and Stanford went on to win in OT. Sherrod is the engine that drives the bus for Colorado.

This game is a major test for the Stanford defense.

On the other side, Colorado will make it tough for Stanford. They are the #1 scoring defense (tied with Arizona) in the conference. And Colorado is forcing over 20 TOs a game.

A benefit of living in Denver is the "Stanford Dividend" which is the opportunity to see our athletes compete when they visit CU in Boulder.  I received two courtside seats for this game as a Christmas gift.  Alas, lurking omicron.  For once I'll be glad to have Pac-12 Network.

I must admit, I'm a bit concerned about this one for a couple reasons. 

1) I think they are a tough matchup, especially Hollingshed. At 6' 3" she can get her shot off at will against smaller guards. She should get a whole lot o' Hull thrown at her today, but she's pretty much had her way with any Stanford player who has guarded her in the past. Sherrod is legit as is Quay Miller. Maybe Tara will go big and put Brink on Hollingshed if no one else can stop her. Cam, in my opinion, has the mobility to stay with her. Then put Belibi/Prechtel/Kiki on Miller. 
2) Colorado and Utah are notoriously difficult because of the altitude. 

I will be very psyched if we can win this one comfortably, but something tells me it's going to be close. Their weakness is they don't shoot it very well from the perimeter as a team, so maybe we can control the interior/boards and keep them in the 50's.

Well, they haven't shot the 3 well, but not because they haven't tried.  Foreman is a three point specialist who has been in a slump.  But the thing about slumps is that they end.  Let's hope it is not against us.

I was just watching the replay of the Colorado UCLA game, and Forman went 5/10 from three point range.  Hollingshed was not effective, but Sherrod was on fire.  Lots of potential offensive sparks for us to snuff out.  Won't be easy.  Colorado's defense highly reminiscent of Texas, with lots of steals.

My prediction:

This is Colorado's first game vs a ranked team, so they haven't been really tested.

And Tara and most of her team remember their72-77 OT loss against the Buffs 
at high altitude which snapped their 11-game winning streak to begin last season.

I'd say Stanford has a great game plan prepared which they implement well, and 
they win albeit by single digit.

I feel confident that if we play well, we should beat them. However, we are prone to lapses which have cost us games, as they are often self-inflicting. I know even the best teams are not perfect, but we still need to keep them to a minimum and hopefully we will win.
