I hope those endowments were made with a clause that said "If Stanford drops its competitive volleyball team, the remaining moneys will be distributed immediately to ..<charities other than Stanford University>". I don't like the idea that the University could again cut a program and have money intended for that sport to be instead go to some official's bottom line.
NOTE: The link posted is about MVB. The initial (current, as I write this) title indicates "MBB" which I suspect is a typo.

Thanks MT I corrected. I’m so used to posting about WVB
Yes it does have that clause
One of the endowment sponsors is a very good friend

Actually I corrected it to MVB and you changed it back to MBB. The link really is about MVB, no fooling.

I’m curious as to what, if any, role Muir played in this.
Perhaps someone in the know can elaborate.

Uninformed guess is that by trying to shut down the sports he managed to get them better funded. Wouldn’t be the first time; when Cal threatened to end its baseball program, donors came forward to save it. I’m guessing that by endowing as much of the volleyball program as is needed to make it financially self sustainable, the donors are looking to prevent its future demise.
I don’t think it’s what Muir set out to do, though.

Some of those who fought to reinstate the program are funding the endowments

Gates, Nathan Lietzke, Will Rottman, Kevin Lamp, Gabriel Miranda, and Adam Chang all decided that the degree from Stanford was more important than leaving to play volleyball elsewhere.
For Gates, it even helps him continue the rivalry with his sister, Madeleine. She was a star middle at UCLA, graduated, and then transferred for grad school to Stanford for her final season of eligibility in 2019. It paid off in the form of national championship.
“She came over in college and decided to win a national championship,” said Gates, who won a state title in high school. “I am definitely trying to compete with that and win one here. It would just be great for the team, and I could also put that one against her, too.”

Great article, thanks. I didn't know Madeline Gates's brother was on the MVB team.
