Men's BB: Stanford 79 - ASU 76 - Papa John - 01-21-2022

The whipping by the Wildcats reminded us--as Baylor first showed--that the Stanford men do not belong on the same court with this year's basketball elite. On the other hand, the wins versus USC, @ WSU and in Hawaii showed that the team has potential to be better, at least somewhat better, than any of Coach Haase's other Stanford teams. So is this the beginning of the annual swoon or can this group of Cardinal pick their chins up off the floor, regroup and battle for a postseason berth (yes, I'm talking NIT)?

We'll find out on Saturday as Stanford, #95 NET, takes on #158 Arizona State (6-9 overall, 2-3 conference). ASU, still coached by Bobby Hurley, has been an uncharacteristic mess this year and is playing three consecutive games on the road at Stanford, USC and Arizona, then face the LA schools in Phoenix. I imagine Sun Devil fans who watched last night's LSJU-UA game are happy to get Stanford now, as Saturday's game will be their best chance for a victory until the second week in February.

I don't follow ASU basketball much at all, but I imagine the big story is still the transfer of superstar Remy Martin to Kansas last spring. The Sun Devils are dead last in the conference in scoring offense, FG %, 3-pt FG %, 3-pt FG % defense, and second to last in scoring margin, defensive rebounds, and rebounding margin. What do the Sun Devils do well? Not much, but they are sixth in the conference in FG % defense, fourth in blocked shots, fourth in steals, sixth in TO margin and assist/TO ratio. ASU is in the bottom half of every other team stat category. On the bright side, they are coming off a 2-pt win over Utah, who is currently last in the conference.

ASU's leading scorer is sophomore guard DJ Horne (13.3 ppg), a transfer from Illinois State, where he was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team last year. Bobby Hurley is in his seventh year as ASU coach with an overall record of 110-92. The Sun Devils struggled Hurley's first two years, then made the NCAA Tournament in his third (1st round loss) and fourth (2nd round loss) seasons. The Sun Devils were 20-11 (11-7) in 2020 so they might have made a third straight NCAA tourney if not for Covid. But the Sun Devils had a surprisingly poor season last year (11-14) and will be amongst the worst in the conference this year, so maybe there's some heat on Hurley?

If Stanford's team has shown anything, it's resiliency. That will be put to the test on Saturday.

This is one of those games that is going to determine whether this is just another season of mediocrity or whether the team has any chance of punching a ticket. It's a little early to say it's a must win, but I kinda think it's a must win.

Agree. An embarrassing loss at home to a bad team would be way worse - and say much more - than being played off the court by a potential Final Four team, IMO.

Didn’t realize Martin had actually graduated before the transfer.

Quote:Super-senior transfer guard Remy Martin has removed his name from the 2021 NBA Draft and will attend Kansas for the 2021-22 season. Martin declared for the draft following the 2020-21 season and announced in May that he would transfer to KU from Arizona State if he did not remain draft eligible.

“I was blessed with the opportunity to put my name in the draft,” Martin said. “The main objective was to learn what I needed to do to get better and try to be the best player I can be. It was pretty easy when it came to Kansas, playing for such a historic program and a Hall of Fame coach. I want to be a part of it. I want to be part of the brotherhood and help the team win as much as I can.”

We lead 42-32 at the half. ASU shooting, and missing, a lot of 3-pointers. We've made 7 of 10.

Stanford shooting and missing a lot of 2 pointers - 4-17. But if the team continues at 70% on threes, I think they’ll have a shot at winning.

Ahead by 13...now imploding. Three straight to's by Silva, 1 by Ingram and McConnell, off foul by Raynaud, now ahead by 4..

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - PVTree - 01-22-2022

We've managed to blow a 15 point second half lead and now trail 62-61 with 5 minutes to go.

C'Mon Boys! Hang tough!

18 turnovers now.  Every ****ing game the same.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - martyup - 01-22-2022

Bobby Hurley is a card carrying azz hat.

Delaire has been terrible this game.

Nice screen by Keith to foul out Lawrence.

Now we need to get Horne to foul out.

Hurley lives on the court.  Why do refs put up with that?

OMG, Ingram misses 2 FTs with 15 seconds to play.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - Madera86 - 01-22-2022

Foul!

77.8 FT percentage. Stanford. Money from the line. :)

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - old spanish trail - 01-22-2022

One good thing. Keefe learned how to shoot ft's. And, an escape.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - PVTree - 01-22-2022

Ugly win, but I'll take it.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - magnus - 01-22-2022

I watched the last 5 minutes.  Keefe is the MVP.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - cardfan77 - 01-22-2022

Geez, ugly win but a win nonetheless

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - TriangleTree - 01-22-2022

Hurley is an a-hole, that’s the storyline in this otherwise unremarkable game.

Much needed win, time to start playing well again.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford vs ASU, 8 pm, Saturday, FS1 - martyup - 01-22-2022

ASU scores to tie it up and Angel gets fouled shooting a 3 with 1.1 seconds to play.  He nails all 3 and we win!!!!

Stick it in your ear Booby Hurley.

BTW, Hurley walked off the court jawing at the refs and one of his players had to be restrained from attacking the ref.  He never even shook hands with Hasse.

It must be stressful for Hurley to live in a world where everyone else is an idiot, nobody knows what they're doing, and every foul called against his team was bogus.  For Bobby, life is just one big injustice.

Could not agree more. Glad he found his FT stroke.

ASU coach and his player should be reprimanded for going after the referees after the game.
