New MBB coach? - BrevinsBest - 02-18-2022

It's clear that this program is moving in the wrong direction, regardless of some highly-rated recruits. I went to the UCLA game and the stadium was half-full (half-empty). It's time for a change. My preference would be Kris Weems or even Mark Madsen. Thoughts?

RE: New MBB coach? - BobK - 02-18-2022

When Monty was named coach I was shocked as were friends. Absolutely the right hire. Of course Hasse was a similiar hire with the same type background

Of former Stanford that’s easy, Jarron Collins. Of course hiring a current assistant didn’t work before. DiBiaso and Dawkins.
I would sure love to keep Cohen

RE: New MBB coach? - winflop - 02-18-2022

Former players:
Jarron Collins
Mark Madsen
Kris Weems
Eric Reveno
not sure what other former players are in the coaching ranks, either as NCAA head coaches or NBA assistants

Others
Wayne Tinkle (tough get, but worth pursuing)
Tommy Amaker

Why is that "easy?"
What is Jarron Collins doing now?

Also, I'm big fans of all the former Stanford players listed in this thread, but what makes you think any of them can coach?

Maybe semantics, but I wouldn't say that the program is moving in the wrong direction. The problem is that it hasn't really moved in any direction since Haase replaced Dawkins. Still mired in mediocrity, despite the clear improvement in recruiting.

Tim Morris was at Maples last night. Assistant with Utah

I think "Pops" was the nickname for Nick Robinson, who is currently an assistant coach at BYU but was previously on Trent Johnson's staff at Stanford.

Didn't we have a very similar thread last year?  Or maybe in 2020?

I enjoy wishful thinking as much as anyone.  But someone should mark this thread "for entertainment purposes only."  It* ain't happening.

*it being replacing Haase with anyone, alum or otherwise

The guy at USF. Those kids play hard.

And have the NCAA head coaches on the list won?
Or do you propose Stanford hiring an assistant with no head coaching experience?

I realize it's Muir, but don't you want someone who has proven that he or she can run a successful program at college level?

RE: New MBB coach? - gailtate - 02-18-2022

Jeesuz, leave it to a peanut gallery of alums to favor one of their own running the show. YFKM? Sentimental choice the basis of a hire? I dunno what the national numbers say about it but I would think that it's probably not statistically encouraging. The question is who is The Best Candidate available?

Sure, but beggars can't be choosers. This is no longer a destination job, even for a former player.

That being said, Maddog seems to be having success at UVU with a small sample size. Amaker has won 7 Ivy League titles since 2011.

Maddog would be my first choice.

Kyle Smith
Todd Golden
James Jones (better coach than Tommy Amaker)

No alum coach unless they are better than the alternatives. An assistant in the NBA (Jarron Collins) makes no sense to me.

RE: New MBB coach? - PVTree - 02-18-2022

Yes, meant Nick "Pops" Anderson since the question was what other alums are coaching.

A coach I hope they would consider, and is available next year, is coach K......not Chewy at Dook, but Krystowiak. I always liked him as a coach and think he got a raw deal when fired.

RE: New MBB coach? - PalmTree - 02-18-2022

At one point toward the end of the Dawkins era, I thought Shaka Smart might've been a good fit but he wound up going to Texas the year before our HC position became open.  He's now just started at Marquette, is probably out of our price range and this would be a big step down, but WTH - one can always dream.....

Agreed re: Krystowiak (especially if a package deal with the football coach!).

But I am (perhaps foolishly) clinging to notion that Haase may get 'er done next season.
