Women's Tennis: Texas (5-2 WIN) and UNLV (7-0 WIN) - ColoradoTree - 02-25-2022

Stanford is currently hosting #5 Texas, the defending national champion and will play UNLV Saturday morning at 11.

Texas took the doubles point, and it wasn't terribly close, with Yepifanova/Xu losing 6-2 on #2 and Geller/Madurawe losing 6-1 on #3, though Blake/Ma led 5-3. So, we need to get four singles wins against a deep, young team that won the title last year. No biggie.

A tall order, but not one that's beyond this team, as they only trail on two courts right now. This would be a big, big win for Stanford, to say the least.

1. #18 Ma tied with#4 Peyton Stearns 4-4 (Ma was up a break, but just dropped deciding point)
2. #17 Yepifanova trails #40 Kylie Collins 2-6, 1-0
3. Blake leads Chavatipon 6-1, 1-0
4. Houghton trails Zeyanlova 2-5
5. #65 Xu tied with Ovrootsky 4-4
6. Choy leads Rapolu 6-2, 1-0

That'll go to Court 1, but once you log in, you can toggle from there.

Deciding point for the first set on 1 on Ma's serve, but Stearns clips the line for 5-all. Sigh.

Meanwhile on 5, Xu takes her first set 6-4!

I'm loving the new streaming site so far, makes it far easier to watch the matches and know the score than the old setup IMO

I'm shocked Yepifanova got this to a third set. She did not look good in the first set.

We are so close.  Gotta win one of the last two.  We lead in the 3rd set in both.  Ma and Yepi.

Yepifanova wins and Stanford clinched!

Ma wins her match. 5-2 Stanford

Hell of a big win!  You betcha.

That was Stanford over defending national champions Texas, a team that returned 4 of its 6 singles players from last year.

Stanford should definitely be moving up from their current ranking of (checks the numbers) 64th in the country.

What a fight, you guys! This is why I'm still a little sore we fell short against UVA--not only should we have gone to Indoor Nationals, we should've made some noise. The difference was Yepifanova folding late there and turning it on here, and that's awesome. (And Ma turning on the jets in the third over Peyton Stearns, holy mackerel.)

We're good, folks. Real, real good.

I certainly got nervous when Yepifanova double faulted in the 3rd set at 5-2, 40 all. She came back on her next service game for the win. Matches like these should be a good confidence boost for her. To succeed at this level, you have to learn the right mindset for closing out an opponent. Part of that is having a short memory and keeping doubt out.

Ma on the other hand looked like she has nerves of steel. She played a sliced shot in the 3rd set that dropped perfectly into a corner near the service line with a ton of spin that her opponent had no chance to return. Takes a very high level of skill to pull off that shot in a pressure situation. It was very impressive.

Pretty cool to go 4/4 in third sets.

I too was nervous when she double-faulted. I actually called it for some odd reason. I really thought she was going to crumble again like she did again UVA. This match should give her confidence moving forward.

I'm so glad they decided to play out Ma's match. She's very poise and plays a great game. She reminds me of Fery on the men's team. Both play very a smart game and both are fun to watch.

RE: Women's Tennis: Texas (5-2 WIN) and UNLV - ColoradoTree - 02-28-2022

And for the record, we beat UNLV 7-0, as expected. Everyone played the same line, everyone won in straight sets, and the most games lost was Choy's 6-4, 6-3 win at the #6 line.

New team rankings come out tomorrow, so we'll see where we land.

Other Pac-12 matches:

* Texas beat No. 6 Cal 4-3 last weekend (Texas also beat Cal at Indoor Nationals).
* UCLA also beat Cal 6-1 and USC 4-1, so they may be turning things around after a disappointing start.
* After a scorching start to the season, USC has now lost 6 of 7, including an upset loss to UCSB on Saturday.
