If I'm Jayda Curry, I'm demanding a recount.

As I thought, Haley Jones gets the P12 POY. Her only competition must have been Brink as discussed in the other thread.
Could have gone to either one, but I think coaches think more about how to defend Jones than any other player because of her versatility. This may have been given her the advantage over Cam.

If I'm Jayda Curry, I'm demanding a recount.
Curry: 18.7 PPG, 34.3 MPG, 129-332 (38.9%), 47-137 3PT (34.3%), 107-134 FT (79.9%), 78 total boards, 61 assists, 30 steals, 3 blocks.
Kneepkens, 11.7 PPG, 23.4 MPG, 110-252 (43.7%), 46-125 3 PT (36.8%), 49-56 (87.5%), 114 total boards, 32 assists, 20 steals, 12 blocks.
Curry did throw up a lot of shots, but she also got to the line a lot. I imagine those two stats are related. Curry seems like a future star for sure.

I thought it was great to see that we snagged 3 of the 5 positions on the all-defensive team, but am I the only one who thought Anna was more deserving as the defensive POY than Cam? A big part of being a shut-down defender of an opponent's top scorer is staying out of foul trouble so you can be on the court to do your thing defensively. For Cam, fouls continue to be a problem and for every time Anna got into foul trouble, Cam did so approximately ten times as often. Cam finished the season fouling twice as often on a per-minute basis as Anna and was. Largely as a result of foul trouble, Cam end up playing 17% fewer minutes than Cam, even though she started 9 more games than Anna.
You could also have given this award to Lexie based on her help defense and amazing double-teaming skills too.
A superb defensive team. To repeat as national champions, I think Cam will have to continue to elevate her defensive game against bigger and stronger players. Fingers crossed.

For POY, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Cam, Haley, or Lexie win it.
For DPOY, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Cam, Anna, or Lexie win it.
That's is how dominant this team was in the Pac-12.
So glad Tara was recognized as COY. She is leagues ahead of any other coach in the Pac-12.

This is clearly a case of the awards not quite fitting the players, and so they fudged a little. That is not to say that Brink and Jones are not deserving--I think they are--but fitting the player to the available awards was certainly awkward.
Brink as defensive POY could be questioned, given that she has had so many problems fouling while on defense. She has improved, and so perhaps they were looking at her defensive performance late in the year. And her presence in the paint probably affects the other team long before she even has to make a defensive play. But I would have thought both Lexie and Wilson are better defenders at this point.
Jones, too, has some issues in my book--with turnovers and sometimes defense, and sometimes she has these infuriating, passive, offensive lulls. However, she has more raw talent than anyone else in the league, and she has those intangible qualities that make her a winner, as evidenced in the final four last year and at Oregon this year. So this is a reasonable selection, I think, and is well deserved.
Ideally, Jones and Brink would have been Co POY and Wilson or Lexie Defensive POY. Or make Jones and Brink Co POY and leave out the defensive award altogether. Brink's merit comes equally from both ends of the court.
Tara certainly deserves the award this year. I'm sure they would like to share it around, but what can you say? She simply is the best, and she is having a good year.
Iriafen would no doubt have made the freshman team if she could have had more minutes, but she will be there with a vengeance in the future.
I am indeed curious about Jayda Curry.

Yes! This would have been perfect. Other teams couldn't complain since both awards landed with Stanford players anyway. All four are deserving.

Kiki was one of the 3 honorable mentions on the Freshman team.

Would have liked to see Lacie get at least honorable mention on one of the teams.

Ironically Utah opens the Pac-12 Tournament against Cal in the late game. Perhaps Curry and her teammates will use the snub as motivation to exact justice on the Utes?

Great point about Lacie. She dramatically exceeded expectations across the board. She is certainly in the mix for a Most Improved award too.

I don't care too much about individual awards - too hard to do them right because players who are allowed to kind of hog the ball/the stats/the playing time tend to get more love than players who are maybe more efficient but don't stand out as much because they are on a better team and don't get to play hero ball as much. That said, I am glad our players got them, and congrats to all the winners - Jones, Brink, Lexie Hull, Wilson, and Iriafen. Congrats to Tara too, of course, for her COY.
Throughout the years we have gotten way fewer FOY awards than you might expect because our frosh usually don't play as much as those on worse teams. I also like to watch how star frosh do when they go around the conference again in their soph year. Some turn out to be starts. Some get scouted more and better and are contained, never really become stars. I can see a good case for Curry as FOY. I can also see one for Kneepkins (whose name I am sure I just mangled) since she scored fewer points but was more efficient than curry and she also was a big reason her team improved so much.

Brink was voted Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year by the media.

Last night's Cal vs Utah game was also a contest between the two Freshmen of the year (Curry / Media poll) and Kneepkins (Coaches poll). Seems to me that Kneepkins was the clear winner on that one. Looking forward to seeing how she does against WSU tonight. I'd love to see both WSU and Utah make the NCAA tournament and do well.

I was surprised at first that Kneepkens was picked over Curry of Cal, but someone on the Cal board, which I do not post in but look at occasionally, posted that Curry's P-12 stats were not very efficient, shooting percentage of about 32%, which is really bad. She was much better against their very weak non-conference schedule.

Some of the moves that Kneepkens makes has me thinking she will be all-conference next year as a soph and ready for the WNBA before she is done. An exceptional talent.

Frankly, I thought freshman Jenna Johnson outplayed both of them in the 20 minutes (39 for Curry and 31 for K) she played due to foul trouble.

Curry played too much hero ball yesterday. Maybe that is typical and explains low efficiency throughout the year.
