Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer says she has an ‘obligation’ to mentor, give opportunities to women (msn.com)

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - 81alum - 03-13-2022

Another nice article about Tara, again stressing her mentorship of women coaches.  Interesting that her first two coaching jobs were offered to her by female ADs.  How many female ADs are there these days?  Have their numbers shrunk in the same way that women coaching numbers have shrunk?

The irony of WBB is that as its popularity has grown, opportunities for female coaches have shrunk.  Go Lindy!

Women ADs

Would Condi consider taking over Muir’s job?
:)

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - BobK - 03-13-2022

Actually we have a woman poised to be AD.
Condi being 67 might be doubtful. But she would be great.

she's holding out for NFL commissioner...

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - BostonCard - 03-13-2022

Given the fact that she is director of the Hoover Institution and a previous Provost (not to mention National Security Advisor and Secretary of State), being the Athletics Director, who reports to the Provost, would be a step down for Rice.  Agree with Bob that she would be great, but I doubt she’d take the position if offered.

I dunno . . . Athletic Director at Stanford University has a LOT of cache, especially in "the proper" circles.  Yeah, Provost to AD is a step down, but she is no longer Provost.  (Hoover Director to AD at Stanford is a step up).  Moreover, and I'm being completely serious about this, I know LOTS of people who would take the Stanford AD job in a heartbeat, even though it would mean a h.uge pay cut.  It is just "one of those jobs" that the elites love and would love to hold.

I bet Condi would love that job.

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - BostonCard - 03-13-2022

You may be right. I can’t claim to know her mindset, and as she is 67, she might want to engage in something different, even if it is a “step down”.  It’s been said she has always had an interest in being NFL commissioner, but Goddell is 63, so that ship may have sailed for her.

Hoover Director is a clear step down from Provost and an enormous step down from Secretary of State.  Also, everything Condi does at Stanford means leaving a ton of money on the table.  Her financial opportunity costs are very high.

To the extent that she cares about status, Stanford AD has plenty.  The question is how much interest & motivation she'd have, and also how much autonomy she'd have in the role.

My guess: strong interest/motivation + not enough autonomy = no go from her perspective.

In contrast, I'd say that Hoover Director has, for Condi, extremely strong interest/motivation + about the most autonomy & prestige one can have as someone who wants to build or run a conservative center or institute in an elite university setting.

Not from the point of view of an academic. The fact this is a sports board skews peoples evaluation IMHO. Provost is an administrative job. So is AD. They have no academic prestige at all. How would you classify being Dean of the School of Engineering? I can guarantee you that from an academic point of view that is a lot more highly ranked position than AD.

True, IMHO.

Nope. It is a flunkies job. It is like being the facilities director, only worse. Has no academic status whatsoever. Its occupant also has to live with continual public second guessing of everything that goes wrong from people like us. Not a real attraction for somebody with an academic focus.

Yes, it is about as good as it gets from that point of view. That's why she is there.

This is perfect!  Great weight on "academic prestige" . . . that only academics care about.

In the real world, Athletic Director at Stanford University carries a cache that transcends academics . . . and politics, for that matter.  You head the department that combines the elites of academic and athletic prowess.  At the #1 university in the world (arguably).  I'm telling you, that carries so much more prestige (and envy) than you think it does.

But hey, we can just add this to the list of things we disagree on.

Well, she couldn't close the deal on Kiki Rice so she failed her AD tryout.  ;-)

I agree with those above who stated that she is likely going to stay in a academic position.  According to some classmates who studied with her and have kept in touch with her, she is very happy working in a policy oriented academic setting.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Hey, I never said Condi would take the job, primarily because I doubt it would ever be offered.

I am saying IF she were offered the job, that she would love the job itself and be good at it.  But even though I believe that, I can't say with any certainty that IF offered, Condi would take it.  She may value academic prestige far more than I (and the trogs I hang with).

[Is that equivocal enough?]

When asked what my dream job would be, I respond Stanford AD. Too bad I have zero experience in Athletic Administration.

If anyone failed convincing Kiki Rice, it was her aunt, Susan Rice, not Condi.

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - BostonCard - 03-14-2022

Again, different strokes for different folks.  Rice has always been a great supporter of athletics, and, as Provost, insulated the department from Gerhart Casper, who didn’t understand university athletics and couldn’t be bothered to.  In fact, many academics are like that. They would look at the athletics director position and say “why?”  But Rice isn’t most people, and she might see an appeal that many, if not most, academics wouldn’t.  Given where she is in her career, her directorship of the Hoover Institute may be her last position, at least until she goes off into the sunset, becomes emeritus, attends seminars a
and regails graduate students war stories about the White House in the Bush administration.

That being said, although both the athletics department and Eastern Europe are im crisis, even though I don’t always agree with her politically I would rather she devote her considerable mental firepower in helping to think of creative solutions to the s***show in Ukraine, than the one in Arillaga Family Sports Center.

For those who haven't read this article; Tara says retirement some day, but not now. I selfishly hope she coaches another 5 years. We have the talent and upcoming recruits to contend for more titles in the coming years. She sounds like she continues to really enjoy coaching and is not ready to give it up.

With several really, really top recruits coming in, I imagine she wants to be around and see what develops for a few years to come. These last few years have been so exciting with possibilities and the terrific players -- and equally terrific people -- on the teams. Players who appear to really like Tara and she them. Both mutual respect and emotional attachment.

RE: WBB: Tara article, Woman of the Year Nominee - BostonCard - 03-16-2022

Tara deserves to be head coach as long as she wants. I do feel bad for Kate Paye, though, who has stood by her side as the heir to the position, and quite easily could have been a head coach elsewhere, but has stuck around.  I have to assume that they’ve talked and that Vanderveer has been up front with Paye.

Yesterday, Tara gave us more evidence of why she is so admired. She's challenged the basketball world to step up to help Ukraine, pledging herself to make a $10 donation to a charity in support of the Ukrainian peoiple for every three hit in the women's tournament and urging others to join her. Here's a link to an article about this. https://www.aol.com/news/tara-vanderveer-uses-ncaa-platform-234012603-002257171.html
