WBB: Stanford 78 -- Montana State 37 - 81alum - 03-16-2022

Preview:

It is high time we turn our attention away from the final four, or predictions of championships, and instead contemplate the next game.

The Montana State Bobcats come to Maples on Friday evening.  The Bobcats are the Big Sky champions, are 22-12, are ranked 156 by Massey and 164 in net.  For comparison, that would put them well below Washington, the weakest Pac 12 team (95 net) and even well below Portland who we beat early in November (75 net.)  The most comparable team we have played this year is UC Davis (134 net.)  So on paper, they are grossly over matched.

MSU plays 10 players more than 10 minutes a game and no players more than 32 minutes a game--so they have a deep rotation.  Their star scorer is 5'6" junior guard Darian White, at 16ppg.  White is the one player at 32 minutes so she is too valuable to be taken out very much.  Curiously for a 5'6" guard, she is not a three point specialist--hitting only 26% from three and not taking them in great numbers.  She must do a lot of mid range jumpers or be a slasher or both.  She has 5 times as many assists as anyone else on her team (with a 2:1) so I presume she is the point guard.  She also has 84 steals on the year.  I definitely sense an assignment for Anna Wilson.

MSU's second leading scorer is 6'2" junior forward Kola Bad Bear.  (I presume that is a Native American name.)  She scored 11ppg and leads the team in rebounding.

Also noteworthy is 6'2" sophomore forward Katelynne Limardo.  She is their best three point shooter at 37% and has made 57 of them so far.  They also have a sophomore guard who has made more than 50 treys but at a lower percentage.  Overall, they make 7 treys a game.

As a team, their shooting percentage has been only 38% and worse than their opponents.  Their rebounding has also been behind that of their opponents.  They are +4 on turnovers, which helps their cause, and get about 9 steals a game.   They are 5th in the nation in free throws made--they must slash a lot and get fouled a lot.

MSU has a 6'6" center but she has not played since November, so I presume an injury has ended her season.  They have 2 6'2" players and a 6'3" player but only one has been a consistent starter.  In general, they are going to have a terrible time scoring the ball inside against our height and length.

I have no idea what defense they normally play, but if I were their coach I would try the golden oldie and do a zone, clog the paint against us, dare us to shoot the three and pray we have an off shooting night.

We won't.  Our team will be loose and the treys will drop, sooner or later, and this should be a chance for a lot of our players to play.

Quote:“It’s a very special program, talented program, with the best in the business as their leader,” Binford said. “We’re going to have our hands full, but we’re going to go in with a lot of grit and put everything out on the floor. We’re going to prepare our scout as best we can and set this team up to have a great game.”
A 16 seed has beaten a 1 seed once in NCAA women’s tournament history, and Stanford was that 1. Harvard beat the Cardinal 71-67 in 1998.
“A little nervous, but I’m going to go in with as much confidence as possible,” White said. “Anything can happen.”

The Merc had an article on Tara this morning:

and an Anna Wilson piece, complete with Tolstoy quotes:

Clicked on the Tara article first -- turned out it was an article I had already ready that yesterday somewhere on-line, can't remember where. Great article. But then when I clicked on the article about Anna, the Merc said I'd already used up my quota of free articles (on the Tara article, I guess), so no, I couldn't see it unless I subscribed. Rats. Didn't want to subscribe, so I guess I'll have to look for it elsewhere.

Found the Anna article elsewhere, in East Bay Times. Here's the link:  https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2022/03/18/anna-wilson-has-become-much-more-than-defensive-stopper-in-extended-stanford-career/

Not sure about the Merc, as I am a subscriber, but on some sites you can use an "incognito tab" or "private window" (or whatever your browser calls it) to get by having used up your quota of free articles. Or clear cookies for that site.

Using “reader mode” also sometimes works.

Stanford just came onto ths floor. All 15 who play are dressed and warming up.

My impression is that warm up shots are missing more than I remember

I don’t recognize the refs

Wilson with a pretty no-look assist to Belibi.  Stanford out to a 11-0 lead.  They have no answer for Brink, but we are trying to force the ball into her and have given up a couple of turnovers.  I like our fast pace, though.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - BostonCard - 03-18-2022

Not exactly pretty, but it is really ugly if you are Montana State.  5 minutes into the first quarter, and Montana State has yet to score.

I am genuinely conflicted between rooting for us to shut the out for the quarter and feeling really bad for Montana State, who is just having a brutal day.  They are like 0/20.

20-0 at the end of 1. Yowzer!

Have we ever shut someone out over the course of an entire quarter before?  And we've not exactly been a machine on offense, with Lexi missing some layups and us going something like 2/6 from the free throw line.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - TheFarm07 - 03-18-2022

We are doing our best South Carolina impression, as we shut out Montana State in the first quarter 20-0.

Brink got the party going, scoring the first five points of the game to go along with 3 blocks and 2 rebounds, all in the first three minutes of the game. However, she is only 1/4 from the FT line. Also, a little scary with Brink slow getting up after a foul late in the first quarter.

We did have six turnovers, three of them trying to get the ball inside, one on an overpass by Wilson to Lexie on a fast break opportunity, Jump stepping on the sideline with the ball and a traveling by Belibi when she was hounded by Montana State defenders.

Lexie was the other points contributor with 6 points, but she did miss two fast break layups.

Defensively, Montana State is 0/20 and has turned the ball over five times.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - martyup - 03-18-2022

Every point scored in the 1st was in the paint, other than FTs.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - PVTree - 03-18-2022

It rankles me to watch Brink miss so many FTs. She should be a 70+% FT shooter, not hovering around 50% and making every trip to the line an adventure.

Need to get Hanna going in bbn postseason!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - 81alum - 03-18-2022

Have we ever held a team to 0 for a quarter?

They just said on TV that it was only the second time ever in the NCAA tourney that this had happened.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Montana State 7pm Friday - BostonCard - 03-18-2022

Montana State finally scored, to much applause.
On the next possession, they suffer a shot clock violation.

Yes, on March 18, 2022! ;)

Don't think we ever had before tonight.
