MBB: March Madness - martyup - 03-19-2022

The #8 see NC Tar Heels are trying to hold on to a 13 point lead on #1 seed Baylor with 6:15 to play.  They were up as much as 25. I didn't see it but apparently NC had one of their best players ejected for a flagrant 2, which ignited Baylor's comeback. Then another Tar Heel fouled out.

It's now a 9 point lead with 5:22 to play.

RE: MBB: March Madness - BostonCard - 03-19-2022

Back up to a 9 point lead with under 4 to go.

NC State won -- a #1 goes down to a #8. Hope the Stanford women take note that it can happen.

3 point lead with 26 seconds to play.

TIED WITH 15 SECONDS LEFT.  UNC HAS POSSESSION.

RE: MBB: March Madness - BostonCard - 03-19-2022

UNC with a 6 point lead in OT and under a minute left.  Will they blow it… again?

BC

UNC with a 5 point lead and 5 seconds.  There was a no call on what should have been a foul on a three point shot, but even then, it would have been tough going for the Bears.  With UNC having possession and getting fouled, I don’t think it will be physically possible for Baylor to come back.

BC

And UNC wins 93-87.

#1 Kansas only leads #9 Creighton by 1 at the halftime break.

RE: MBB: March Madness - martyup - 03-19-2022

Can the Bluejays upset the Jayhawks?  Still a 1 point game.

RE: MBB: March Madness - BostonCard - 03-19-2022

Kansas beat Creighton, 79-72

Creighton had the ball down by one with under a minute left but turned it over, resulting in a breakaway layup, and they couldn't recover.

The Stanford men, of course, do not need any reminders of this.

It was UNC, making things worse.

That wasn't the only time.  I'm not even going to mention the other--still too painful.

RE: MBB: March Madness - BostonCard - 03-19-2022

Yeah, I know that this game was more painful…

#15 seed St. Peters was not satisfied in beating Kentucky.  Today they punched their dance card to the sweet 16 with a win over #7 Murray State.

Teams from Kentucky don't stand a chance against them, apparently.

The similarity in these years was striking:  a massively underseeded UNC team.  The team that beat Stanford made it to the Final Four.  Will this one?   Very possible.  We'll see.  BTW, I was at that game in Birmingham.  The things that chapped the most:  (i) Monty playing Casey (2-12) too much over Mendez (4-4), and (ii) the refs letting UNC's stud two-way athlete, Julius Peppers, play football on the hardwood without any whistles.  There was a particularly brutal knock down/bowl over of a Stanford player, no whistle, leading to turnover favoring UNC and a bucket after that, iirc.  And that game was tighter than final score.

But real bottom line is that UNC should not have been on 8/9 line, if they had stayed healthy and played anywhere near their potential during the regular season.  As soon as the draw came out that year, the coaches knew Stanford was in for a tough R2 game.

Gotta love the matchup between the Hurricanes and the Cyclones in sweet 16.  Miami upset #2 Iowa while Iowa State upset #3 Wisconsin.

Did anyone see this ending to the Arizona-TCU game?  Dalen Terry sends the TCU player flying, and there is no whistle.  It should've been 2 TCU free throws with about 1 second on the clock.  I hate NCAA basketball referees so much.

Real time I agreed with you.
On replay, I'm less certain.
But it can't be a no-call can it?  Must be either a foul or a backcourt violation (unless, I'm misunderstanding the rule).

In the end, I was okay with the way things worked out.  The TCU player was in "I'm gonna dribble and be a hero mode" and going, at best, in parallel with half court line (at half court line) with 2 seconds left.  TCU was, in all likelihood, not even going to get a decent look, let alone score.  So "rewarding" them with a whistle there on a terrible possession would have been the ultimate bailout.  But I also agree that AZ winning it in regulation in that fashion would have been brutal.  The way it ended up . . . I'm okay with.  But real time, my reaction was the same as yours.

RE: MBB: March Madness - Phogge - 03-21-2022

Stanford needs the kind of passion that TCU played with. Haven't seen it in 20 years. Loved Beast Mode in the post. Lots of unmasked fans in the tourney just as the new Omicron is sneaking in.
