Cage Match, Rock vs. Smith. Who ya got? - cardcrimson - 03-28-2022

Didn't watch the Oscars, didn't even know they were on (sorry TC). Learned of the kerfuffle between Rock and Smith just this morning and heard the replay on KNBR. I gotta take Rock on this one. Justice would have been Smith missing his Oscar because he was in police custody for assault.

So making fun of AA person’s disease on national tv is ok now. And yes I know it is

Apparently she's made jokes about it before. Even Will was laughed at Rock's joke. Then he saw Jada not laughing. . . .

In hindsight (seriously, how many people knew that Jada had a disease that caused hair loss (hate auto correct)), maybe the joke was in poor taste, but Rock certainly didn't warrant getting slapped over it.

PC has come to standup comedy. Much of standup is in poor taste but makes some people laugh. Smith could have confronted Rock backstage or better yet sometime this week in private but he's a big star and he is sooooooooo important.

Mick LaSalle was on the nose with his piece on SF Chronicle online.

As for my take in my category, all the DP's are lucky that Roger Deakins hadn't shot a picture in two years. But hold the presses as he has Empire of Light coming out in December so that's a cinch nomination. I'm looking forward to watching the one female-shot film nominated, Power of the Dog.

PS Jimmy Cagney could have kicked Will Smith's azz.

Hey, they had to do SOMETHING to get people to remember the damn thing was on in the first place...

The entitled class doing what they feel entitled to do.  Chris Rock feels entitled to joke about a woman's serious medical condition in front of a world wide TV audience.  Will Smith feels entitled to go all "Waterboy" on Chris for the joke.

Like a bear's fart in the woods, if someone wouldn't have brought it to my attention on the Cardboard, I would have never known it happened.

It's one thing to privately admit that you're gay, or that you have alopecia.  It's quite another to have someone out you in front of billions of people. That costs you acting jobs and income. In a less enlightened time, Tom Hulce literally outed David Hyde Pierce when he strongly implied that he was guy. Hyde-Pierce's face was something to behold, as was Jada Pinkett's. And I agree, I don't think Will Smith intended to slap Chris Rock until he saw his wife's reaction.

RE: Cage Match, Rock vs. Smith. Who ya got? - TrumpCard - 03-28-2022

I saw the LAPD statement that they would be available to take a report if the "other individual" wanted to pursue it.  I would be interested to hear from folks here who might be familiar with criminal law proceedings on the county level in California.  Is it the norm for the DA to forego assault charges whenever the victim declines to file a report, even if other evidence besides the victim's testimony would be sufficient to obtain a conviction?

In the DV context, I understand that the police want to encourage victims to seek help in the moment, and a policy of pursuing charges might discourage that.  A victim of DV might be worried about losing a financial provider or might be worried about retaliation.  Again, for the criminal law folks, or maybe for the family law folks, is that logic sound, or is it now outdated?

In any event, outside the DV context, that logic would not seem to apply.  And allowing the victim to decide whether to pursue criminal charges might have a number of negative consequences.  For example, the perp might avoid a criminal record (reducing the ability of the justice system to account for the incident in the event of future acts of violence), but the perp also might be subject to extortion (which financially benefits an unscrupulous victim, but does nothing for an honest victim or for society).

Here, if Smith were charged, wouldn't he be able to enter a diversion program and get his record clean by taking anger management and not doing anything stupid for a while?  Why would that not be just result and the best example for others in our society to see?

Apparently, she's been quite open about discussing it the past, not that I listen to "celebrities" much. I just learned today that Jada and Will have an open relationship, as well. Open to everything except jokes, apparently.

As far as I am aware,  alopecia areata (which is reportedly Pickett's diagnosis) is not a serious medical ailment. Of course the personal toll on a public figures sense of self worth linked to their appeance is another matter... Serious medical ailment? Not in my book... Then again I don't practice medicine in Hollywood/ LA

How can you watch that tape and NOT think Smith is 99% in the wrong here?  And a guy with problems.  First, he laughed at the joke; then decided to walk up to him and whack the dude; then he compounded it by yelling expletives repeatedly.  And all this after Rock sorta backtracked from his joke ("Aww, c'mon.  That was mild.").  My impression, anyway.

Yeah, Will, this world is all about you.  Please.

Chris Rock handled himself very well, all things considered.

Now if he had tried to hit THE Rock that would have been great TV.

She's talked about her condition for years, made Instagram video posts about it, given numerous interviews, there was no outing last night.

My understanding is that in domestic violence situations police are compelled to make arrests regardless of the victim's stated position, but that in other situations they have discretion, e.g. if two men get into an altercation in a bar, no injures result, neither party wants to pursue it, then police will generally take the same stance as they've taken in this incident.

Hulce? David Hyde Pierce? News to me.

For my money, Will Smith joined the Frank Sinatra/Bill Cosby club of performers witb a reputation for good humor and good sense, who suddenly display a violent anti-social streak. If you look at the roles he has been cast in lately, except paradoxically King Richard, few if any would be available to him.

Ño more calls from Disney.

Never a great idea to make a public joke out of the physical appearance somebody's wife. Especially on national TV. And when the somebody is bigger than you are and did the training to star as Muhammad Ali. Still, in view of Smith's weird worship of Richard Williams and the fact it was a sucker slap, I will forever cut slack for Rock. Most important, why am I even spending time on this pop-culture crap?

RE: Cage Match, Rock vs. Smith. Who ya got? - newguy - 03-28-2022

Will Smith was 100% in the wrong here.  he was laughing at Chris' joke until he saw the reaction of his wife.

he had the opportunity to apologize to Chris when he gave his acceptance speech.  instead, what he said resembles  "DARVO" in the parlance of abuse:  Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.

now obviously, the 'abuse' was simply a slap in the face, followed by a foul-mouthed verbal tirade.  but the approach is basically the same.  and at this point, it is clear that Smith needs counseling.

I understand Smith has apologized, a good thing if he wants to return to his good guy repertoire.

What ever happened to defending your woman's honor? Pistols at 20 paces!

That reminds me: the fencing team placed 12th in the Nationals. Congrats to them.

RE: Cage Match, Rock vs. Smith. Who ya got? - Phogge - 03-28-2022

The best acting jobs of the year were Cumberbatch in "The Courier" and the guy who played Penkovsky.

Chastain should have won for Zero Dark Thirty but Hollywood doesn't do right by war pictures anymore. Witness 1917. Long overdue for somebody who really can act.

We just had our weekly Zoom cocktail hour with friends who all said don't even bother with West Side Story. I felt the same way about Dune (actually fell asleep twice and s*** canned it by mid movie).

I am tired of superheros but they make money and that is what drives the car in Hollywood. Even slightly disguised pictures like anything Neeson is in and the two Equalizer pictures.

That ship has sailed. He needs to enter an anger management program, blame it on meds, something. To go from laughing to hitting someone in seconds seems to show someone in need.
