MGolf @ Pasatiempo -
winflop - 04-11-2022
Men's golf tees it up over the hill from campus at Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz today, tomorrow and Wednesday at the 75th Western Intercollegiate. This is their last regular season tournament before Pac-12s, NCAA Regionals, and (hopefully) NCAA Championships
Slightly different format in that they play six and take the top five scores, as opposed to playing five and taking the top four as they do in all their other events.
TV coverage on Golf Channel 4-7pm Pacific today & tomorrow and 1-4pm on Wednesday. Also can follow online at

Course is playing brutally hard. Average score from the early finishers is 78, 8 over par.
3rd hole has been especially tough. 88 players so far, only 23 pars and a single birdie. A 217 yard hole that is playing like a par 4.

Looking at the scores, I'm guessing the winds are really gusting there. Here in Marin we have a steady 23-24 mph, with gusts over 30. I'm guessing it's even worse in Pasataiempo. Vilips is +7 through 6 and the others are struggling too.

Stanford +25 looks like a couple of teams got to play before the wind got bad

I've played that hole many, many times. Straight uphill, bunkers on right and left, tough chip if you're off the green, depends on hole placement.
What I don't understand is why 16 is playing so mild. I hated that hole. Blind drive, have to hit 2nd shot over canyon to three tiered green that was constructed before Stimpmeter was even a word. I remember being on the right of the green, hole was below me 15 feet to the left. I was playing with my dad who said "your only chance to keep it on the green is to hit it here" and he motioned to a point eight feet from the hole. I tried to hole it, and it went off the green. Of course. Today, it was the fourth easiest hole at 4.18 for the 396 yard par 4.
10 is also playing tough, 440 yards, tee shot over a canyon, tight green. Also tough is #5, a 3 par. Not a particularly difficult tee shot, the average is 3.63, third toughest hole. I saw the #1 golfer on our high school team, who played at Arizona State and was a scratch golfer in high school, miss a 31 inch putt three times in a row, from the exact same spot. Very tricky green.

I talked to my uncle who is a rules official there. He said they never considered suspending play, but at the same time conditions were brutal. Not just the wind, but rain in the morning (before a lot of teams teed off) and cold all day, never really getting above 55.
I've played Pasa in perfect weather and even then it's hard. I can only imagine what it was like yesterday.
Stanford played poorly. No other way to describe it. Only two of our six players are in the top half of the field (92 players total). A lot of black (triple bogey or worse), blue (double bogey), and green (bogey) on everyone's scorecards. Coach Ray has got to be pulling his hair out. Can't seem to find any consistency across his roster.
I still think they can make it to NCAA Championships but I don't see this team making it into match play.

Pepperdine blazing early. -6 thru 1.5 holes. -4 on #1, a long par 4 at 505 that to be a short par 5. Stanford +2 thru same stretch.
agreed with Mick on difficulty of #3 and #16 green (I watched a guy lip out for birdie from 3' and have about 60' for his par in the Western one year). #18 green could also be tricky if fast and tee shot is into the wind. you could hit it hole high in the back and still spin it back almost into the barranca.

Stanford is now dead last, +50 part way through round 2. Only one player less than +10 for the tournament. Probably the worst score Stanford has posted in some time. I know the wind is blowing, but a number of teams are handling it far better than we are, sad to say.

I used to play it when it was an interesting, tricky, 471 yard par 5. It had a very large tree just off-center to the right at the 375 yard mark and a considerable bunker to the left, making for some very interesting approach shots. They removed the tree, opened up the fairway, shrunk the bunker, shortened the hole and turned it into a long, playable par 4. About 458 from the tips and 440 from the men's tees. Genuinely don't know where the tee box would be at 505 yards. Women still play it as a 458 yard par 5.

Just out of curiosity, since Stanford came in ranked 12th, is there any reason to think this might just be one especially bad week? I've seen NCAA regionals and finals where top ranked teams just have a really bad week - and lower ranked teams that catch fire. Is there some reason to extrapolate out that this one performance portends our doom for the postseason?

Mick -- in the old days, the back tee box was basically above the cart shed. if you came out of the pro shop with #9 green back, below and to your right, you went up and to the left to get to the back tee box. it has been about 10 years since I've played there so I am not sure if that is the 505 tee box now or not.

We are now 50 strokes behind Pepperdine and in last place and still playing round 2. Hard to figure why we are so absolutely terrible. We must have played in the wind and this course before.

Perhaps, but it's not like the team has really played well all spring season after having a very promising fall season. They haven't been able to put together three solid rounds, even at home. Too many players making too many doubles and worse
Currently DFL, and by a lot. The only Stanford player in the top half of the field is Henry Shimp who is playing as an individual.
I expect that by the time everyone finishes, at least a couple teams will take over our current position. But a bottom half finish is almost assured at this point, and that's not good.

We have a very good chance of finishing +100 after tomorrow's round. I'm sure that's not a first, but it feels like one.

You're probably right. I played it almost every day as a teenager in the mid-1970s, then about once a year for the thirty years after that. Always liked it, it was a great home course.

Yep. I watched the Golf Channel broadcast yesterday and they mentioned that Coach Ray decided to play his younger guys because the experienced ones weren't performing up to his expectations. I think this specifically means Henry Shimp who is playing as an individual and Nate Menon who didn't make the trip.
Hopefully it lights a little fire under those two, but at the same time nobody has played well this entire tournament. Shimp has played well, currently 26th with 6 holes left to play. Everyone else is 51st or worse.
My guess is the lineup for Pac-12s and NCAAs will look something like this
Brown
Vilips
Thorbjornsen
Shimp
Menon/Ng/Yang
Only real competition will be for that 5th spot
