Lexie Hull / Stanford in the WNBA -
CompSci87 - 04-11-2022
Lexie was just drafted #6 overall by the Indiana Fever. First player not invited to the draft show to be picked. It's a surprise she was picked so high. I hope she does great in the WNBA!

Yeah, I was watching and boom, surprise pick. It seems that Indiana wants defense, energy and shooting, and Lexie fits that bill. That they picked her so high means she has a great chance to stick and get playing time there.

Wow, fantastic. Yes, a real surprise that she went so high. Early projections I saw were along lines of mid 2nd round, thus not invited. Glad she went to Indiana -- my sense is that's probably the team that she has the best chance to make the team with. (Note, only the 2nd player to be drafted who was playing in Minneapolis in the FF)

She will be joining a former Stanford Teammate, Alanna Smith

I believe you are correct, which is the best fact in terms of Lexie's chances of making the roster.
Great for Lexie.
Hope she has an enjoyable WNBA career.

First round is now over, with 3 from the Pac-12 going in this round (Sabally #5, Lexie # 6, Hollingshed #8) -- and no one from U Conn. First U Conn pick was Williams at #14. Anyone have any idea when was the last time that UConn had no one going in the 1st round?

Last season. Westbrook returned, and Walker left a year early, so they had no graduating seniors. 2017 was the last year they had someone in the draft and didn't get a first-round pick.

Look at this celebration from friends and teammates. How awesome! The Stanford sisterhood is real. Our student athletes are tremendous people and teammates. Congrats to Lexie. Go make a roster.

It seemed that the announcers weren't prepared for Lexie to be called at #6 because they were talking about another topic when she was announced and kind of missed her moment. They did mention that Dunn said if a player can shoot 3's over 40 percent then she wants them. Guess Lexie fit the bill plus her length and defensive tenacity.
I am super excited for her to have a great rookie season and continue to showcase her skills in the pros however I am not so thrilled that she is going to Indiana. I loved Indianan when Dunn was the coach with Tamika Catchings and Katie Douglas running the show however there has been a brobdingnagian downward spiral within the organization. Stanley is now the coach but I just don't see any good development of players in Indiana or much overall success as a program.
Lets see if Lexie can help this team rebound and be on top like they were years back.

Indy might be a great team for her. They emphasize defense and toughness, and Lin Dunn said she really wants three-point shooters and loves 40% shooters from three such as Lexie. They are in total rebuild mode and very young so few spots are sewn up with veteran players. The WNBA is a tough league to make a team, and even first round picks can get cut before the season even starts, however, the teams do usually try to give their first round picks a good chance. Kiana last season was not in a great spot because there were two established point guards ahead of her in Seattle. When that team had to make a choice, they chose to add another position and cut her mid-season. Easier when a team is starting from the bottom and need a lot but have little locked up.

I totally agree. I'm just worried that she may not develop much in Indy which could hurt her options in the future. I watched the Fever play at the LA Sparks last year when I was visiting LA and you could just see the cracks in the team in terms of chemistry and motivation. Players were yelling at each other on the bench during timeouts and not in a Draymond Green get in your face lets get going type of way, more like they didn't get along.
I hope that makes sense? I'm not good at articulating my thoughts. ADHD for the win!
There are a lot of the same players on this years roster from last so I'm hoping their second year head coach plus the addition of some players in free agency can bring some confidence to the team.

There are 22 players in the Indiana roster right now.

The fact that she went with Indiana's 6th pick and not 10th pick probably indicates that either they were afraid some other team would snap her before 10, and/or they really like her.

I wonder if Indiana got some insider info from one of their former players, Jeanette Pohlen-Mavunga, who just finished her first year as an assistant coach under Tara :)

Pundits are now weighing in that Lexie was a good 1st round pick for Indiana. ESPN article rates her as one of the top eight fantasy rookie picks.
