OT: 2022 Niners thread - Mick - 04-30-2022
The 49ers finished their draft with no trade for Deebo Samuel - btw, if you want to read an insulting offer, read the Jets' offer for Samuel. The Niners would give up Deebo and next year's #2 pick, the Jets would give up this year's #1 pick and next year's #4 pick. Nothing like what the other teams were getting for their WR stars. Makes the Niners' supposed $19 million offer look pretty strong.

How did the media like the Niners draft? Ratings were impacted by the fact that the Niners lacked a first round pick, and didn't select until #61 overall. Here are the ratings:
1) Rated B+ by Sports Illustrated. Gray and Jackson get excitement, not much for the rest.
2) Rated B- by NFL.com. Jackson a C, Davis-Price, Gray and Burford a B, the rest a B+
3) Rated B- by USA Today.
4) Rated B by PFF.com (Pro Football Focus).
I read two separate grades for USC's Gray at the "A" level, that he went much later than he should have.
ESPN did a ten year assessment of each NFL team's drafting ability since 2012 and ranked the Niners 30th...which includes the Baalke years.

The Jets trade offer (if accurate) was insulting. The 49ers offer of just under $19 million/year (if accurate) is also insulting. Tyreek Hill is at $30 mm/year, $19 mmm/year is slightly above Kenny Galladay and Christian Kirk territory.

Drake Jackson looks like an athlete. Now he needs to be coached up by the Niners ferocious DL assistant.
The Niners have jacked up their speed by drafting Gray and signing a real punt returner, Ray Ray McCloud from Pittsburg.

Purdy was the eighth rated QB in the 2022 draft by Pro Football Network, #10 on NFL Draft Buzz and #7 on Walter Football. I couldn't find him on the Top 10 lists of the other 1/2 dozen top 10 lists; not SI, not CBS, not others.
Comments are interesting. He's a dink and dunk passer, no elite trait, can be overconfident, very good decision maker, but can't escape the blitz, has a strong arm, can throw short and intermediate throws, steps up in the pocket, resets his seat well. Makes split second decisions, smart.
On the down side, he's short and dumpy, can sail throws, can throw too hard sometimes, tries to thread the needle too much, doesn't read defenses particularly well.

The irony of Brock Purdy being "Mr. Irrelevant" is not lost on me, given Purdy was instrumental in making Iowa State relevant as College Football program. He was 30-17 as a starter and 24-11 in the Big 12. Had a career passer rating of 151. Luck was 162 and Mills 141, so...
I wouldn't rule Purdy out of being an NFL QB of some accomplishment.

Nate Sudfield has a guaranteed $2,000,000 on the books for 2022. I believe that if Purdy beats him out he can be waived with any team picking him up responsible for the contract balance. Ergo, he can be safely placed on the taxi squad.
Baker Mayfield and the injured Jimmy G are due their money unless they can restructure a deal somewhere.
July/August will be intense at the 49ers camp as Lance gets the snaps and Jimmy's future is dissected over and over.

Lance and Sudfield are locks to make the 53 man roster. Purdy is practice squad material. In essence, he is the new “Mullens”, an insurance policy. The only way he sees the field is if the two guys in front of him are injured.

For me the draft is a meh, but I'm disposed to view our drafts that way generally as I don't believe our brain trust has earned benefit of the doubt when it comes to the draft. I don't think very highly of their draft judgment and nothing here jumped out at me as particularly amazing. A few players may add value.
It was hard to watch the first round knowing that if we hadn't done one of the dumbest trades in NFL history last year to move up (@ me if Trey Lance becomes a Hall of Famer) we could have easily had Jimmy G as QB1 with last year's first round pick being used either for Mac Jones to apprentice behind Jimmy G or Micah Parsons to give us one of the best players in the NFL AND then this year could have gotten, say, George Karlaftis or Arnold Ebiketie in the first round and another mid-round pick for OL or TE help AND another first round pick next year. Just as an example as there are of course many permutations of how we could have used or traded those picks. Instead it's all eggs in on Lance not only being good but being better than Mac Jones (or Davis Mills, who we could have gotten with a later pick) plus all that opportunity cost. Nothing will ever live this trade down other than Trey Lance being a Hall of Famer.

Stanford, Alabama, and Boise State came on late in his recruitment out of high school after he was one of the greatest high school football players in America and aced all his classes as had been his norm in high school, coming out of nowhere to be a big-time late bloomer. Presumably he went to Iowa State because they showed the most love and had the most credible path for him to play, a decision that's hard to fault. He was the textbook case for me of a guy who proper evaluation of a fall senior year of high school can prove to be a major way to outsmart market efficiencies in high school football recruiting, which is all about sophomore and junior year and, especially at QB, can miss late salient data points like this. Once at Iowa State, Purdy was a gamer and leader par excellence. But the book on his flaws is not made up. It's hard to see him being a good NFL QB. But he is a great, great flyer for Mr. Irrelevant. The intangibles and skills are awesome and crazier things have happened than this kind of profile being a very useful QB2/emergency option at the NFL level.
Honestly it was probably the pick that made me smile most, though I am interested to see what Jackson and Gray can do.

I'm not ready to dump on a staff that drafted Warner in the 3rd round, Greenlaw in the fifth, Mitchell in the sixth and Jennings in the seventh. And who sets a nice press table on Sundays with your choice of fresh omelettes.

Sudfeld's an interesting character. 6'6", 235 pounds, never broke a bone until 2019 (non-throwing hand), very tough. He was supposed to be #2 for the Eagles way back when.

Was looking at Pro Football Focus's assessment of draft classes. Niners were as follows:
2019: #2 best overall draft.
2020: #10 ranked by both NFL.com and PFF.
2021: #29, because Trey Lance didn't play and made lots of trades. Banks, Sermon & Thomas didn't contribute much (Thomas did post-season)

Lots of pressure on Lance. Don’t know if he has to be HOF caliber. But he has to be better than Fields, Jones, Mills etc. All of whom, with possible exception of Fields, the Niners could have drafted in their original slot (or second round if Mills.).
Shanahan and Lynch essentially bet their jobs on him. So, they saw something.
