Kevin Hogan to Texans -

Hogan was cut by the Titans on Sunday and picked up today on a one-year contract with the Texans. Guess he'll be on the practice squad and/or backing up Davis Mills. Pep Hamilton is the Texans' OC.

That's awesome for Hoagie! Count me among the surprised that he's still in the league (even if it means just the practice squad)

I don't think it deserves its own thread but FYI KJ Costello was invited to the Saints mini-camp. I'm very happy for him to get a shot, but that seems very uphill. Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Ian Book has to be one of the better QB depth charts in the league. Saints basically giving Costello a chance to become a practice squad player.
Very happy for Hogan's continued opportunities as well. In some ways arguably the most underrated/under-appreciated Stanford player of all time. Not saying folks here don't appreciate him, but he's the greatest winner we ever had, played well multiple years, and was truly sublime his senior year. If he hadn't been dealing with his dad's death in 2014 and as a result partly held us back from a better season I think he'd get much more love. It also didn't help to follow an unfollowable act. But Hogan is the man.

Totally agree. He didn't have Andrew Luck's marvelous natural ability. There were complaints about this and that. What he did was take what he had and win. Few guys do that. He is indeed "the man".

Joyous and grateful that I had the chance to see a 3X Stanford Rose Bowl QB--and two-time Rose Bowl champion. This young man had all the right stuff and a supporting cast the likes of which we may never see again. Great to see him still in the game. Kevin Hogan is a winner.

Got to be in Stanford's top ten QB's with Albert, Garrett, Brodie, Plunk, Bunce, Benjamin, Elway, Luck.

What a QB legacy Stanford has. You didn't even list Stanford's all-time (and single season) passing leader, Steve Stenstrom, and that's not an outrageous omission given the guys you did name.

if they had a stronger supporting cast would be candidates for this list, Dick Norman and Trent Edwards.

Yep! Thanks for the Trent love. For what it's worth, Stanford's ten best QBs according to NFL performance (as judged by Career Approximate Value) have been (aside from Frankie Albert as he is too old school for this list):
1. John Elway
2. John Brodie
3. Jim Plunkett
4. Andrew Luck
5. Trent Edwards
5. Steve Dils
7. Turk Schonert
8. Mike Boryla
9. Davis Mills (obviously rising)
10. Steve Stenstrom
Mills has a chance of being top five after this season. Obviously the top four has a massive distance on everybody else.

Bobbbbbbb and I saw Garrett play. If the list includes the best Stanford QB's in COLLEGE Garrett is at least top 5. If it lists the best all around football player Garrett is #1. Punter, kicker, DB, QB. In his senior year led the nation in passing AND in intercepting passes. My all time favorite Stanford player.

Stenstrom was my immediate thought as well, although I may be prejudiced since I got my BS in 1994.

Ironic that not single name above qualifies for the "Hogan Trophy": emblematic of multiple Rose Bowls and RB wins.

I would have thought Chad Hutchinson would have made that NFL list.

Hutchinson is tied for 12th with Babe Laufenberg (Freitas 11th). I don't know much about how the algorithm computes value as Hutchinson certainly had greater counting stats than Strenstrom, Laufenberg, and Freitas. By conventional statistical metrics it would be fair to put Hutchinson 10th, but he wasn't as good in the NFL as Boryla and Mills.

Don't care how they did in the NFL. Interested only in how they did at Stanford.
Albert and Plunkett are 1 and 2, either or. Albert the first great T QB and an innovator, went undefeated, Rose Bowl win and should have been national champs since eventual champ Minnesota chickened out of the RB berth. Plunkett all time NCAA total offense, RB and the Kinder Trophy. Then Elway/Luck. Elway results were meh. Shaw failed Luck at the worst possible moment.
5? Hogan on results, Garrett on talent and versatility.
All in all great players.
Most underrated, Bunce by a mile. Med school over the Redskins.

I don't think it makes sense to fault Elway for the record of the team. Stanford had zero defense at the time. He was utterly spectacular.

The NFL Career Value of Andrew Luck is a story of "what might have been..." I feel like he had the potential to rise to the very top of this list, if he had played another 10 years, received some protection, and won one or two Super Bowls. I think all of these accomplishments were well within Luck's reach.
But the dude was way too smart for that - and fortunately for him, he was already a centimillionaire and the proud founder of the Andrew Luck Book Club!
